The Fort Hall Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation of the federally recognized Shoshone-Bannock Tribes in the U.S. state of Idaho. It is located in southeastern Idaho on the Snake River Plain north and west of Pocatello, and comprises 814.874sqmi (2,110.51km2) of land area in four counties: Bingham, Power, Bannock, and Caribou counties. Founded in 1868, it is named for Fort Hall, a trading post established by European Americans that was an important stop along the Oregon and California Trails in the middle 19th century.
A monument on the reservation marks the former site of the fort. The community of Fort Hall, along Interstate 15, is the largest population center on the reservation. The total population of the reservation was 5,762 at the 2000 census. There are more than 5,300 enrolled members in the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and more than half reside on the Fort Hall Reservation. The tribes are governed by a seven-member elected council and maintain their own governmental services, including law enforcement, courts, social and health services, and education.
After being included in United States territory in 1846 upon settlement of the northern boundary with Canada, Fort Hall developed as an important station for emigrants through the 1850s on the Oregon Trail; it was located at the end of the common 500-mile stretch from the East shared by the three far westemigrant trails. Soon after Fort Hall, the Oregon and California trails diverged in northwesterly and southwesterly directions. An estimated 270,000 emigrants reached Fort Hall on their way west. The town of Fort Hall, Idaho later developed 11 miles to the east, and Pocatello developed about 30 miles south on the Snake River.
An Indian reservation is a legal designation for an area of land managed by a Native American tribe under the US Bureau of Indian Affairs, rather than the state governments of the United States in which they are physically located. Each of the 326Indian reservations in the United States are associated with a particular Nation. Not all of the country's 567recognized tribes have a reservation—some tribes have more than one reservation, some share reservations, while others have none. In addition, because of past land allotments, leading to some sales to non-Native Americans, some reservations are severely fragmented, with each piece of tribal, individual, and privately held land being a separate enclave. This jumble of private and public real estate creates significant administrative, political, and legal difficulties.
The collective geographical area of all reservations is 56,200,000 acres (22,700,000ha; 87,800sqmi; 227,000km2), approximately the size of Idaho. While most reservations are small compared to US states, there are twelve Indian reservations larger than the state of Rhode Island. The largest reservation, the Navajo Nation Reservation, is similar in size to West Virginia. Reservations are unevenly distributed throughout the country; the majority are west of the Mississippi River and occupy lands that were first reserved by treaty or 'granted' from the public domain.
The terms Indian Country, Indian Reserve, Indian Reservation, Indian Territory and Indian Land may be easily confused. Articles on related topics are titled as follows:
Places for groups of Indigenous peoples to live
Indian country, (collectively or individually) the many self-governing Native American communities throughout the United States
Indian colony, land reserved for urban Indian settlements, especially in Nevada and California
Indian reserve, land reserved for First Nation peoples in Canada
Indian reservation, a similar area for Native American tribes in the United States
In 1971 Paul Revere & the Raiders recorded the song on the Columbia Recordslabel, and it topped the Hot 100 on July 24. The RIAAgold certification followed on 30 June 1971 for selling over a million copies. It was later certified platinum for selling an additional million copies. The song was the group's only #1 US Billboard hit, and their final Top Twenty song.
