For the Birds is a science fictionshort story by Isaac Asimov. The editor of a proposed fashion magazine wanted a science fiction story about a clothing designer. Asimov agreed, and wrote the story in November 1978. It was accepted, but the proposed magazine never appeared, and Asimov sold the story to Asimov's Science Fiction. "For the Birds" ran in the May 1980 issue of Asimov's, and was reprinted in the 1983 collection The Winds of Change and Other Stories. The story was one of three Asimov wrote in the late 1970s set among a series of O'Neill-type space habitats.
Plot summary
Charles Modine is a fashion designer who has been hired by a company called Space Structures, Ltd. to design wings for use in space habitats. The habitats have only recently been built, and Space Structures is having trouble attracting immigrants; they hope that the prospect of flight will attract more permanent residents. Also, if the residents take up flying on a regular basis, the regular exercise they receive will eliminate the need to keep the habitat spinning rapidly, with its attendant unpleasant Coriolis effect. Modine travels up to Space Settlement Five, where he learns that the habitat's engineers have already designed a set of wings. Unfortunately, they are difficult to master; it will be Modine's job to redesign the wings in some way that will make it easier (or at least more attractive) to fly. Modine decides to design a set of wings for himself. After a week's work, he gives a demonstration for the habitat's administrators, and it is a success. Modine realized that in the low-gravity region near the habitat's axis, the movement of fish through water would be a better model than the movement of birds through the air, so he designed flying gear with fins and flippers. "Wings," he points out, "are for the birds."
For the Birds is the fourth studio album by Dublin based band The Frames. The album was first released in Ireland on 2 April 2001 on Plateau Records, the Frames' own indie label. The band's line-up for this album featured Glen Hansard on guitar and vocals, Colm Mac Con Iomaire on violin, Joseph Doyle on bass guitar and backing vocals, Dave Odlum on lead guitar and Dave Hingerty on drums.
According to the album notes, recording took place in a wide variety of places: "recorded by Steve Albini, Craig Ward and David Odlum at Electrical Audio, Chicago and in Ventry, Kerry at Joan's house with additional recording and mixing at various bedrooms and houses including Black Box, La Dionae France, Trevor Hutchinson's, Mic Christopher's and Mrs Odlums."
In May 2009 "For the Birds" was voted by writers of the Irish music website CLUAS.com as the best Irish album released between 1999 and 2009.
On 30 March 2011 The Frames played the album in full at a 10th Anniversary gig in Dublin's Vicar Street (featuring Dave Odlum on guitar), before playing 13 more songs, either from their back catalogue or special performances with friends. Joining the band on stage at Vicar Street were Liam O'Maonlai, Bronagh Gallagher, Damien Rice, Interference and others.
Egyptian identity is closely tied to geography. The population of Egypt is concentrated in the lower Nile valley, the small strip of cultivable land stretching from the First Cataract to the Mediterranean and enclosed by desert both to the east and to the west. This unique geography has been the basis of the development of Egyptian society since antiquity. If regarded as a single ethnic group, the Egyptian people constitute one of the world's largest.
The Ashkali (also Aškalije, Haškalije, Hashkali) and Balkan Egyptians (Jevgs, Egjiptjant or Gjupci) are Albanian-speaking ethnic cultural minorities (recognized communities) which mainly inhabit Kosovo. They are sometimes considered to be AlbanizedRomani, but they do not self-identify as such and since they are not sharing the same language with the Romani people nor the traditions they want to referred just as Albanians. Prior to the Kosovo War of 1999, Ashkali registered themselves as Albanians. Now they are divided by identifying with two different groups, although the people share culture, traditions and language (Albanian).
During the Kosovo War, they were displaced as refugees in Albania, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia and whole Western Europe such as Germany and France. The "Ashkali" identity was created in 1999, as they tried to show their pro-Albanian stance and distinguish themselves from the Roms (Gypsies).
History
The "Ashkali" have been classed as a "new ethnic identity in the Balkans", formed in the 1990s.

This is What Ancient Egyptian Sounded Like
In this video I reconstruct a sentence in the Ancient Egyptian language, circa 2500 BC. As I discuss in the video, despite the language being written with seemingly indecipherable hieroglyphics, scholars have put a lot of work into reconstructing pronunciation. In fact, there are hundreds of words whose pronunciation we believe we know with some degree of accuracy. So I decided to make my own sentence entirely out of these words! Here are some caveats:
* The grammar is probably outrageously off – I just strung the words together without their conjugations, many of which are not known.
* I somewhat embellished the pronunciation of certain sounds like /k/ which I turned into a more Middle Eastern sounding /q/
* The accent is sort of Arabic / Middle Eastern, which is my best guess to what an...

From Hatshepsut to Nefertiti to a Coptic Abuna, meet the many forms of the long-lived Egyptian language. Watch as they help us listen back to the original sounds of the hieroglyphs. Then, identify a family full of Egyptian's ancestors and relatives, refine those pronunciations and arrive at an outline of Egyptian pronunciation.

To be honest this is more for fun that anything else, and I definitely make no representations as to the accuracy of this sentence, but I’m pretty proud to share what I’ve learned about Ancient Egyptian and make my best guess as to how the language sounded! Hope you enjoyed the video!
