The European Parliament (EP) is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union (EU). Together with the Council of the European Union (the Council) and the European Commission, it exercises the legislative function of the EU. The Parliament is composed of 751 (previously 766) members, who represent the second largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India) and the largest trans-national democratic electorate in the world (375million eligible voters in 2009).
It has been directly elected every five years by universal suffrage since 1979. However, turnout at European Parliament elections has fallen consecutively at each election since that date, and has been under 50% since 1999. Turnout in 2014 stood at 42.54% of all European voters.
Although the European Parliament has legislative power that the Council and Commission do not possess, it does not formally possess legislative initiative, as most national parliaments of European Union member states do. The Parliament is the "first institution" of the EU (mentioned first in the treaties, having ceremonial precedence over all authority at European level), and shares equal legislative and budgetary powers with the Council (except in a few areas where the special legislative procedures apply). It likewise has equal control over the EU budget. Finally, the European Commission, the executive body of the EU, is accountable to Parliament. In particular, Parliament elects the President of the Commission, and approves (or rejects) the appointment of the Commission as a whole. It can subsequently force the Commission as a body to resign by adopting a motion of censure.
Despite opinion polling predicting a decisive victory of the governing centre leftSDP-led coalition, the centre rightHDZ-led coalition won a razor-thin plurality of the vote. The turnout of just 20.8% was the lowest turnout in a national election in modern Croatian history.
The European Parliament Election, 1999 was a European election for all 626 members of the European Parliament held across the 15 European Unionmember states on 10, 11 and 13 June 1999. The voter turn-out was generally low, except in Belgium and Luxembourg, where voting is compulsory and where national elections were held that same day. This was the first such election where Austria, Finland and Sweden voted alongside other the other members, having joined in 1995 and voted separately. The next election was held in 2004 (see European Parliament Election 2004).
Final results
Results by country
The national results as at 13 June 1999 are as follows:
Results by group
Communists/Far Left
The EUL/NGL group picked up one seat in the election and seven in the subsequent regrouping, raising its total from 34 to 42.
Social Democrats
The PES group did badly, losing 34 of its seats in the election and slipping to the second-biggest group.
Liberals/Liberal Democrats
The ELDR group did moderately well, picking up one seat in the election and seven in the regrouping, giving a total of 50 seats and retaining its place as the third biggest group. The European Radical Alliance (ERA) were not so fortunate and slipped badly, losing eight of its 21 members in the election.
Elections to the European Parliament were held between 10 and 13 June 2004 in the 25 member states of the European Union, using varying election days according to local custom. The European Parliamental parties could not be voted for, but elected national parties aggregated in European Parliamental parties after the elections.
Votes were counted as the polls closed, but results were not announced until 13 and 14 June so results from one country would not influence voters in another where polls were still open; however, the Netherlands, voting on Thursday 10, announced nearly complete provisional results as soon as they were counted, on the evening of its election day, a move heavily criticized by the European Commission.
342 million people were eligible to vote, the second-largest democratic electorate in the world after India. It was the biggest transnational direct election in history, and the 10 new member states elected MEPs for the first time. The new (6th) Parliament consisted of 732 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
589 Croatia is a minor planet orbiting the Sun, discovered by Dr. August Kopff from Königstuhl-Heidelberg Observatory, with the use of the photographic method. In the moment of the discovery, the asteroid was 12.5mv and was in the constellation of Virgo. The object was named Croatia, after the suggestion made by professor Max Wolf, to honor the foundation of the Astronomical Observatory of the Croatian Natural Sciences Society in Zagreb. The discovery was published in the Astronomische Nachrichten magazine, in the article wrote by Professor Wolf. Later, some astronomers (Johann Palisa, K. Lohnert and some others) were making measurements for the purpose of determining the orbital elements. From these measurements Dr. P.V. Neugebauer from Berlin and M.S. Mello and Simas from Trafaria (Lisboa) had independently determined the first orbital elements. Observations had continued, and among observers there were A. Kopff, E. Bianchi, A. Abetti, G. Zappa, P. Chafardet, Elia Millosevich, J. Palisa, and some others. Observations were made from Berlin, Copenhagen, Rome, Arcetra and some other Italian cities. The radius of (probably) 28.452km (and, consequently, the superficial area of 2543.2km2, and equatorial circumference of 89.385km) were determined by use of the Argelander's Method.

Thanks to her track record, her re-election by an absolute majority (50% of MEPs plus one) is a foregone conclusion.
The Left is reportedly interested in filing an alternative candidate, as they did last time in 2022. However, the alternative bid will be entirely symbolic.

Miroslav Radačovský, an MEP from the Slovak Patriot party, made a short speech in what he said was his 'last intervention' in parliament. He wished Europe and the world peace, before releasing the bird from a bag around his waist. 'Let's let this dove unite all of us. A French Green MEP said the gesture was a violation of parliamentary rules. 'What are you going to do now to get this animal back?' asked Caroline Roose. 'Where is animal welfare in this speaker's gesture? I find this absolutely unacceptable.'

European Union Parliament LIVE: Roberta Metsola Re-elected European Parliament President
Lawmakers will determine the fate of EU leaders from Tuesday onwards as the European Parliament convenes for the first time since the elections in June. Tensions are high as the 720 lawmakers start their five-year term, with current European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's future in the balance. MEPs will kick off their work by electing their president for the next two years and a half. The frontrunner is a familiar face: Roberta Metsola, the Maltese politician who has led the institution since early 2022.
Hailing from the centre-right European People's Party (EPP), Metsola is a moderate figure who is well-liked across the political spectrum and is considered to have done a good job representing the Parliament's views. Thanks to her track record, her re-election by an absolute majority (50% of MEPs plus one) is a foregone conclusion.
The Left is reportedly interested in filing an alternative candidate, as they did last time in 2022. However, the alternative bid will be entirely symbolic.

Who is Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament who was elected for a second time in July 2024? How was she chosen and what is her role?
Every two and a half years, the European Parliament selects someone to represent it when dealing with other EU institutions and the wider world. Parliament’s President is elected in a secret ballot that takes place in the first plenary session after the elections.
The candidate who receives the absolute majority of the votes cast gets the post.
The President also directs Parliament’s activities, chairs plenary sessions and declares the EU budget finally adopted. The role also includes setting out Parliament’s point of view at the beginning of every European Council meeting.

Ursula von der Leyen still faces her toughest test yet: securing a majority vote in the European Parliament, which requires 361 votes. With 7 political groups in the parliament, each with its own agenda, achieving this might prove very difficult. This video will look at whether she can get a majority.

A member of the European parliament released a white dove in the parliamentary chamber on Wednesday, in what he claimed was a gesture of peace.

Miroslav Radačovský, an MEP from the Slovak Patriot party, made a short speech in what he said was his 'last intervention' in parliament. He wished Europe and the world peace, before releasing the bird from a bag around his waist. 'Let's let this dove unite all of us. Let this dove, a symbol of peace … let us realise that what we need most is really peace,' he said.
A French Green MEP said the gesture was a violation of parliamentary rules. 'What are you going to do now to get this animal back?' asked Caroline Roose. 'Where is animal welfare in this speaker's gesture? I find this absolutely unacceptable.'
