The Dissolution of Czechoslovakia (Czech:Zánik Československa), (Slovak:Rozdelenie Česko-Slovenska)), which took effect on 1 January 1993, was an event that saw the self-determined split of the federal state of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, entities which had arisen before as the Czech Socialist Republic and the Slovak Socialist Republic in 1969 within the framework of Czechoslovak federalisation.
It is sometimes known as the Velvet Divorce, a reference to the bloodless Velvet Revolution of 1989 that led to the end of the rule of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the formation of a democratic government.
Background
Czechoslovakia was created with the dissolution of Austria-Hungary at the end of World War I. In 1917, a meeting took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, where the future Czechoslovak president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and other Czech and Slovak representatives signed the Pittsburgh Agreement which promised a common state consisting of two equal nations, Slovaks and Czechs. Soon after, the philosophy of Edvard Beneš pushed for greater unity and a single nation.
Czechoslovakia was birthed in 1918 as the Austro-Hungarian Empire neared its demise and some of its provinces decided to unite in response to their vastly similar cultures, languages, and people.

Czechoslovakia: the full history beyond the Velvet Divorce [OSW documentary].
🇨🇿 🇸🇰 From the early days under Tomas Masaryk to the Velvet Revolution, the dissolution, and current day relations, the history of Czechoslovakia, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, is both fascinating and undiscovered. In our latest documentary, we dive deep with experts from the region to uncover both the past of how Czechoslovakia was established - beginning with the two World Wars, the communist regime and the ultimate peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, known as the Velvet Divorce, into two independent states.
🇸🇰 🇨🇿 We also look at the modern-day nations and ask: does the split of Czechoslovakia continue to influence the two countries today? What do Czechs and Slovaks still have in common? Is there a nostalgia for the former state... and will it ever return?

This episode covers the Velvet Revolution of 1989 within Czechoslovakia which saw the peaceful overthrow of the Communist Government there. Afterwards, things weren't all sunshine and roses though and latent Nationalist sentiment reared its head again. Both the Czech and Slovak halves of the nation did little to save the union and so divorce it was.

The Sbrebrenica massacre in Bosnia was one of the bloodiest episodes in the war that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia. However, one country further north proved a national divorce can be smooth. In 1993 Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Czechoslovakia was birthed in 1918 as the Austro-Hungarian Empire neared its demise and some of its provinces decided to unite in response to their vastly similar cultures, languages, and people.

➡️ We answer these questions and more in our Czechoslovakia documentary 🎦

When Austria-Hungary fell apart, many ethnic groups went their own way. The Czechs and the Slovaks, despite never living in a single state before opted to not only leave the empire but to unite into a single country. So why did they do this instead of going their own way? To find out why watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

The Sbrebrenica massacre in Bosnia was one of the bloodiest episodes in the war that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia. However, one country further north proved a national divorce can be smooth. In 1993 Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
No ordinary sin This perfect working order I'd rather sink than swim If I can't walk on water You let this scandal in It's perfect world disorder I'd rather drown than swim I can't walk on water This taste of dilution Velvet divorce, I get bored (velvet divorce) I get bored (velvet divorce, velvet divorce) I get bored I'd sooner sell it cheap Than tread this limbo culture It takes a gun to plea The stone that we've been under You still take me wrong I don't need understanding Let the damage sink I'm asking, I'm demanding This taste of dilution Velvet divorce, I get bored (velvet divorce) I get bored (velvet divorce, velvet divorce) I get bored I'm losing all my days To nights of blurt salvation I'm fallowing your days It's true, I hate creation This taste of dilution Velvet divorce, I get bored (velvet divorce) I get bored (velvet divorce, velvet divorce) I get bored
If VelvetBurns filed for divorce, Jerry Burns would be devastated, but guess who's cut off — "the person who received thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars ... "Nobody said Velvet was filing for divorce May 16," she said.
JLo has indeed entered a whole new era of fashion post-divorce. From the black and silver beaded see-through gown with fringe details and a black velvet train she wore to The Academy's Governor's Ball...
Jennifer Lopez filed to divorce Ben Affleck on the two-year anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony ... completely open sides that were tied together with several velvet bows ... since her divorce.
Drawing, perhaps, on his own troubled marriage (newly-weds Reed and Bettye Kronstad would be divorced within the year) as well as his turbulent relationship with Nico (the Velvets’ Germany-born chanteuse), Reed sounds utterly drained of all emotion.
Analysis... This noteworthy fixture is testament to both quality and quantity ... From the VelvetDivorce to the break-up of the Soviet Union and, most famously, Yugoslavia, unification is not the normal direction that international football goes ... .
The building stands in Miami Beach... 6 ... Elizabeth Lippman/freelance. 6 ... 6 ... Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez might lose $25M on sale of mansion following high-profile divorce ... A chic loft in the NYC building that birthed The VelvetUnderground lists for $1.79M ... 6.
Speaking on the same program, Hadjiyiannis earlier insisted that “compromise must be sought with the consortium, with all involved.” ... “The one minute there is talk of a ‘velvet divorce’ the next it falls apart within 48 hours .......
... hybrid republic, not because it wasn’t “democratic,” but because it was not “ours.” After a breakup known as the “velvet divorce,” the country came to an end in 1992, to be replaced by two republics.
But there is something very strange ... The pragmatic solution of the “velvet divorce” no longer ensures tangible benefits for the Greek-Cypriot side because Turkey is not ready to return significant percentages of territory ... .
Asked about press reports about a "velvet divorce" between the Government and CCP for the terminal project at Vasiliko , President Christodoulides replied that "I would not say that we are discussing a 'velvet' divorce.
On Saturday, PresidentNikos Christodoulides said there are no discussions of a “velvet divorce” with CPP over the Vasiliko LNG terminal ... “I would not say we are discussing a ‘velvet divorce’.
There are no discussions of a “velvet divorce” with Chinese state-owned company CPP over the Vasiliko liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, PresidentNikos Christodoulides said on Saturday ... “I would not say we are discussing a ‘velvet divorce’.
New information from Phileleftheros suggests that the Cypriot Government and the Chinese state-owned company CPP have fully embraced the idea of a velvet divorce and give the impression that they are working harmoniously towards this direction.
