Belvedere Football Club was founded in 1971 in Northside, Dublin. It was originally the football section of Belvedere Youth Club which had been formed in 1918. The club first began to field teams in the Dublin & District Schoolboy League in 1971–72. In the seasons since the club has won an assortment of youth league and cup competitions at both provincial and national level. The club first came to national prominence in 1987–88 when they won the FAI Under-17 Cup. In February 1990 the club played a small part in launching the career of Roy Keane. Belvedere played a Cobh Ramblers team featuring Keane in an FAI Youth Cup game at Fairview Park. Former Belvedere manager and Nottingham Forest scout, Noel McCabe subsequently recommended Keane to Brian Clough. In 1990–91 Belvedere won the FAI Youth Cup for the first time and within a few seasons Mark Kennedy and then Curtis Fleming became the first two former Belvedere players to represent the Republic of Ireland at full international level. Initially Belvedere recruited players from its home base in Northside, Dublin. However as the clubs reputation grew, it also began to recruit from throughout the Greater Dublin Area and then nationally throughout Ireland. Players from outside Dublin were known as "Belvo culchies" and included, among others, David Forde.
An Erith FC had existed at the turn of the 20th century, however Erith and Belvedere FC was formed due to restructuring of Belvedere and District FC in 1922; which itself had only existed since 1918.
On formation it joined the Kent League. Apart from two seasons (1929–31) in the London League, the Deres remained in the Kent League until the war, with third place in 1928–29 being their highest finish.
After World War II, the Deres were founder members of the Corinthian League, winning the Memorial Shield (League Cup) for three seasons in succession (1948–50). The Deres were one of only three clubs to remain in the Corinthian League throughout its existence, and in 1963 they joined Division 1 of the Athenian League on its expansion to three divisions. They reached the Athenian premier division in 1971, and won the League Cup in 1974, beating Redhill 1–0, via a goal scored by Charlie Carroll. The final was played at Park View on 25 May.
Erith town centre has undergone modernisation and seen an increase in dwellings since 1961. The curved riverside high street consists of one listed building and two others, a Church of England church and the Carnegie Building. Otherwise, it consists primarily of suburban homes. Erith railway station and a dual carriageway link it to Central London and Kent.
Erith has the longest pier in London, and retains a coastal environment with salt marshes as well as industrial land.
Their work at the former site of Erith School in Belmont Road revealed the presence of prehistoric settlement, and of a substantial settlement or farmstead dating from the first century.
