Eltham College is an independent school situated in Mottingham in south-east London. Eltham and Mottingham once formed part of the same parish, hence its name.
Early history
The school dates back to the early Victorian era, when it was founded as the London Missionary Society's School for the Sons and Orphans of Missionaries. A girls' school had been established in Walthamstow in 1838 and a boys' school was opened in the same place at the beginning of 1842. The boys' school later relocated to Mornington Crescent in 1852 and then to a purpose-built location in the centre of Blackheath in 1857 (the old school building became the headquarters of the Church Army and is now a private hospital). Missionary David Livingstone sent his sons to the school while it was in Blackheath.
Current site
The school moved to its present site - centred on an 18th-century mansion (Fairy Hall) in Mottingham - in 1912. The building had previously been used by the Royal Naval School from 1889 to the end of the summer term in 1910.
The school is also associated with EC Waves swimming club and training most training is held at the Eltham College pool.
History
1973: Mr Desmond D. Davey appointed as first principal. Construction of the College begins with the Principal's residence and Preparatory School
1974: Classes commence with an enrolment of 135 students. The College's facilities now consist of an Early Learning Centre (kindergarten), Junior Primary Building, craft workshop, and two aboveground swimming pools
Eltham developed along part of the road from London to Maidstone and lies 3 miles (4.8km) almost due south of Woolwich. Mottingham, to the south, became part of the parish on the abolition of all extra-parochial areas, which were rare anomalies in the parish system. Eltham College and other parts of Mottingham were even before the 1860s therefore not considered within Eltham's boundaries.
From the 6th century Eltham was in the ancient Lathe of Sutton at Hone. In the 1086 Domesday Book its hundred was named Gren[u/v]iz (Greenwich), which by the 1166 was renamed Blachehedfeld(Blackheath) because it had become the location of the annual or more frequent hundred gathering.
