Eltham is one of the 'green wedge' areas that provide relatively undeveloped, accessible environments within the Melbourne suburban region. These green wedge areas are under constant pressure from developments such as road and freeway expansions, but Eltham has managed to retain many tree-lined streets and leafy reserves. However, the character of the suburb is changing rapidly, with increased road traffic and higher-density housing becoming more common.
Eltham developed around what is now Main Road from the 1840s. A reserve for a village at the junction of the Diamond Creek and Yarra River is shown on maps around 1848. By 1851 the first Crown allotments were being subdivided and sold, along with a private subdivision developed by T. M. Holloway, known as Little Eltham. At this time, the town's centre was located around the intersection of Pitt Street and Main Road.
Eltham developed along part of the road from London to Maidstone and lies 3 miles (4.8km) almost due south of Woolwich. Mottingham, to the south, became part of the parish on the abolition of all extra-parochial areas, which were rare anomalies in the parish system. Eltham College and other parts of Mottingham were even before the 1860s therefore not considered within Eltham's boundaries.
From the 6th century Eltham was in the ancient Lathe of Sutton at Hone. In the 1086 Domesday Book its hundred was named Gren[u/v]iz (Greenwich), which by the 1166 was renamed Blachehedfeld(Blackheath) because it had become the location of the annual or more frequent hundred gathering.

Eltham is a district of south east London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It's located 9 miles from Charing Cross and the train station will connect you there in 20 minutes. It's also served by 15 bus routes, most of which pass through Eltham High Street.
About 50% of Eltham's area is green space in the form of parkland, fields and woodland. For this reason, it's considered both 'urban' and 'suburban' in nature.
The Tudor Barn was built in 1525 by William Roper. It's a Grade II listed building used originally and primarily for art exhibitions.
Christian's have been gathering at the Eltham Parish Church since 1166. The seating inside (known as pews) are older than the church itself. The original cheap pine pews were replaced with oak pews donated from an older church. Only nine of the original 19th century windows survived the Second World War.
The town centre supports a loyal core of shoppers, diners, and drinkers, but the nightlife is modest. In recent years, there's been a push by the locals to drive business, community and improvements for tourism to help sustain the area.
Recently, the council spent 40 grand on a six foot sign displaying the word 'Eltham' to create a sense of place. It lights up at night and is part of a 6 million regeneration scheme of the area.
The medieval, art-deco palace in Eltham is over 500 years old and was a favourite royal residence being home to King Henry the 8th when he was young. It was a conveniently safe distance from the disease and plague in London and was popular for its view. Throughout the year, the palace hosts medieval jousting reenactments and art deco fairs amongst other things.
