El Paso is a small community in central Illinois that took on more characteristics of a highway community after the construction of Interstate 39, which supplanted the older alignment of U.S. Highway 51. In addition, El Paso is a potential stop for Chicago-Peoria traffic via U.S. Highway 24.
History
El Paso was founded by George Gibson and James Wathen. Gibson named the city "El Paso" after El Paso, Texas, or from the passing or crossing of two railroads.
In August 1975, the city became the last locality in the contiguous United States to convert its telephone service from manual switching; prior to that time, telephones in the city could not be dialed directly from any outside location, the assistance of an operator being necessary to place the call, and local telephone numbers consisted of four digits. (Certain parts of the outer Aleutian Islands of Alaska could not be dialed directly until the early 1980s.)
Currently served by Amtrak's Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited. El Paso City buses stop nearby. There has been intermittent talk of resurrecting streetcar service across the border to Ciudad Juarez since the last trolley rolled some thirty years ago.
"El Paso" is a country and westernballad written and originally recorded by Marty Robbins, and first released on Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in September 1959. It was released as a single the following month, and became a major hit on both the country and popmusic charts, reaching number one in both at the start of 1960. It won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording in 1961, and remains Robbins' best-known song. It is widely considered a genre classic for its gripping narrative which ends in the death of its protagonist, its shift from past to present tense, haunting harmonies by vocalists Bobby Sykes and Jim Glaser (of the Glaser Brothers) and the eloquent and varied Spanish guitar accompaniment by Grady Martin that lends the recording a distinctive Tex-Mex feel. The name of the character Faleena was based upon a schoolmate of Robbins in the fifth grade — Fidelina Martinez.
Members of the Western Writers of America chose El Paso as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time.
Although today the state's largest population center is around Chicago in the northern part of the state, the state's European population grew first in the west, with French Canadians who settled along the Mississippi River, and gave the area the name, Illinois. After the American Revolutionary War established the United States, American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s via the Ohio River, and the population grew from south to north. In 1818, Illinois achieved statehood. After construction of the Erie Canal increased traffic and trade through the Great Lakes, Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, at one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan.John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow turned Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. Railroads carried immigrants to new homes, as well as being used to ship their commodity crops out to markets.
Though soon outclassed by newer and larger vessels, Illinois was destined to enjoy a long and distinguished career, first as a transatlantic passenger liner and later as the U.S. Navy'sauxiliary vesselUSSSupply. In the 1870s, Illinois may have been the first ship to successfully transport a shipment of fresh meat from the United States to Europe, twenty years before the introduction of refrigeration. As USS Supply, the ship served in both the Spanish–American War and the First World War, and crew members may have been the first United States personnel to fire a hostile shot in the latter. Illinois was scrapped in 1928.

10 Places in Illinois You Should NEVER Move To
Move to these places and you're gonna regret it big time!
If you haven’t heard the news, Illinois is kind of a sinking ship. A lot of people are leaving this state. In fact, more people left Illinois than any other state in the last decade. Last year alone, 51,029 people left the land of Lincoln, meaning .4% of folks skipped town. Many moved to nearby Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and even into the southern states.
Every ten minutes someone leaves this state for good. By the end of this video, we’ll see another Illinois goodbye.
Why? For many reasons I’ll talk about, but generally, people are tired of the taxes and the government mismanagement. But it’s also the cold and the gloom and the lack of jobs and the crime. Right now, Illinois is the 6th most populous state, but soon, Ohio wil...

Now the places we’re going to talk about all fit into the ‘sucky’ category when it comes to quality of life. These upcoming cities are all perfect examples of struggling communities in this state, and a big reason why Illinois people are Illinoyed. Here are the worst places in Illinois that you could possibly live.
It's places like Chicago, Kankakee, Rockford and Peoria.

(Marty Robbins) Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl Nighttime would find me in Rosa's Cantina Music would play and Felina would whirl Blacker than night where the eyes of Felina Wicked and evil while casting a spell My love was strong for this Mexican maiden I was in love, but in vain I could tell One night a wild young cowboy came in Wild as the West Texas wind Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved So in anger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden Down went his hand for the gun that he wore My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor Just for a moment I stood there in silence Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there I had but one chance and that was to run Out through the back door of Rose's I ran Out where the horses were tied I caught a good one, it looked like it could run Up on his back and away I did ride Just as fast as I could from the West Texas town of El Paso Out thru the badlands of New Mexico Back in El Paso, my life would be worthless Everything's gone in life nothing is left It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden My love is stronger than my fear of death I saddled up and away I did go Riding alone in the dark Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso I can see Rose's Cantina below My love is strong and it pushes me onward Down off the hill to Felina I go Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys Off to my left ride a dozen or more shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me I've got to make it to Rose's back door Something is dreadfully wrong for, I feel A deep burning pain in my side Something is dreadfully wrong, for I feel A deep burning pain in my side Although I am trying to stay in the saddle I'm getting weary, unable to ride It's getting harder to stay in the saddle I'm getting weary, unable to ride But my love for Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle I feel the bullet go deep in my chest From out of nowhere, Felina has found me Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
