She herself did not counter this gossip, so that her person was often portrayed in later publications as vicious and immoral. Today's historians, however, attest that she merely took liberties that were usually customary only for male members of the nobility at the time.

Margaret of Navarre (1553-1615), whose life inspired Alexandre Duma’s novel ‘Queen Margot’ was the youngest surviving daughter of Henry II of France and Catherine de Medici.
She was known as the ‘Pearl of Valois’ for her beauty, which many believed to be more beautiful than her sister-in-law, Mary Stuart, and Queen Elizabeth of Spain.
Her father, Henry II, died due to a jousting accident at her sister’s wedding when she was only six, and her mother, Catherine de Medici, ruled France as the regent of her brothers.
Catherine of Medici planned and instigated the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre, killing thousands of French Huguenots who arrived in Paris to attend Margaret’s wedding with Henry IV of Navarre.
After refusing her mother’s proposal to annul the marriage, she saved her husband during the massacre. Margaret’s relationship with her husband deteriorated over time due to strings of extramarital lovers on both sides.
Margaret opposed both her brother and husband and was exiled for almost twenty years, during which she wrote a Memoir to expose the intricacies of her life in the French court, being the first woman to do so.
Margaret was a well-known writer and generous patron, she played a considerable part in the cultural life of the court, especially after her return from exile in 1605.
