She herself did not counter this gossip, so that her person was often portrayed in later publications as vicious and immoral. Today's historians, however, attest that she merely took liberties that were usually customary only for male members of the nobility at the time.

In a time when most princesses were betrothed almost from birth and married in their early teens, Margaret of Valois, the youngest daughter and child of King Francis I of France, broke this mould.
Born in 1523, Margaret and her sister Madeleine were raised by their paternal aunt, Marguerite of Angoulême, with whom they were very close. In 1538, it was agreed by her father and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, that she should marry Charles' son, the future Philip II of Spain. The agreement never came to fruition. Margaret was always described as a lively woman of excellent breeding, but no suitable marriage was ever arranged for her.
It wouldn’t be until just before she turned thirty-six that her brother King Henri II finally arranged a match for her with Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont. He was an ally of Philip II of Spain, and the arrangement was made as part of the terms stipulated in the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis.
The celebrations were short lived, as on June 30, just three days after her marriage contract had been signed, as she prepared for a lavish wedding, her brother, the King, was gravely injured during a tournament celebrating the wedding of his eldest daughter Elisabeth to the recently widowed King Philip II.
He had been struck by a lance that had shattered, and a splinter lodged in his right eye, penetrating his brain. On his deathbed, he ordered that his sister's marriage take place immediately, for fear that the Duke of Savoy might change his mind. Instead of the extravagant ceremony planned at Notre Dame Cathedral and the huge celebrations later, the wedding was a solemn, subdued event conducted at midnight in the small church of Saint Paul's. Her brother died the following day.
Margaret had only one surviving child, her son, Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, who was born when she was thirty-eight. Margaret died in September 1574, at the age of 51. She was buried in Turin at the Cathedral of Saint Giovanni Battista.
