During your Hungary Travels, a historic town to visit is Eger, a town with a Castle, a cute inner town and some excellent local Wine! If you are looking for a day-trip away from Budapest this could be one!
Eger is 2 hours away from Budapest by train, or about an hour and a half with car. This historic town was formed inn the 10th century and became an important religious center, known for it's narrow cute alleys and the Castle which held back the Turkish Army during the Ottoman Empires conquest!

WINE CRAWL in HUNGARY! (VALLEY OF THE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN)
Doing a wine crawl in the Hungarian wine region of Eger was one of our favorite experiences in Hungary. We took a day trip from Budapest and visited the Valley of the Beautiful Woman. In this area, there are 48 individual wine cellars, so we set out to experience Hungarian wine doing a self-guided wine crawl.
An hour and a half north east of Budapest is the city of Eger. It is one of the top wine regions in Hungary. It is famous for having Egri Bikaver, or Bull’s Blood of Eger. The red wine got its name because according to the legend, the Eger soldiers drank wine mixed with bull’s blood.
We visited quite a few of the wine cellars in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman. Our favorite was cellar number 2. Theresa, the host, made our trip to Eger a memorable one. Her cellar was one ...

The number one place for wine tasting in Eger is the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, which is located 10-15 minutes walk from the city center.
Eger is famous for its fine wines and historical wine region. Perhaps fewer people know that the famous vineyard of Eger was introduced by Italian and Walloon settlers in the 1200s. According to legend, in 1552 the handful of Hungarian troops proved so effective against the thirtyfold outnumbered Turkish attack partly because the Hungarians drank the blood of the Bull, thus deterring the Turks who could not drink alcohol. In the 16th century, wine was already in full swing in Eger, and later the tax paid to the archdiocese, the tub, could also be reimbursed to the church in wine.
Eger cellars
There is not a single settlement in Hungary where there are as many underground cavities and cellars as in Eger. It is good to know that these cellars did not arise at the same time and for the same purpose. There were cellars that were dug out for storing wine, others for defensive purposes, but it is worth knowing that the buildings of the Baroque downtown were partly built of tuff stone extracted from underground. The cellar system under Eger is nearly 130 km long, the most beautifully located and atmospheric cellar row of the city is undoubtedly the Valley of the Beautiful Woman.
The legend of the Valley of the Beautiful Woman
The first archival record of mentioning the name of the Valley of the Beautiful Woman dates back to 1843. There are several stories about the origin of the name Valley. According to ethnographer Ferenc Bakó, the "Beautiful Woman" was one of the goddesses of the ancient religion, a figure similar to Venus, the goddess of love, to whom sacrifices were offered in this place. The farmers spoke of a famously beautiful woman who sold fine wines in one of the cellars. According to others, the Valley was named after the beautiful woman of a gentleman's villa.
"Ganging" in the 19th century
The area of the Valley of the Beautiful Woman belonged to the bishop of Eger, so cellars could only be cut with the permission of the bishop. From 1774, landlords could also get land here and cut cellars, with the result that by 1781 there were already 32 wine cellars in the Valley.
The cellar owners soon developed a good habit of visiting each other's cellars, tasting each other's wines, that is, "banding" for several days. At such times, the women were not allowed to go down to the cellar, but could only bring their master good homemade sausages, fresh bread and bacon, so that they could continue their revelry.
Today, the Valley has more than 150 cellars, and its atmosphere and the quality of the wines available here have been praised by countless poets: Sándor Petőfi, Mihály Vörösmarty and Sándor Márai.
If you are in Eger, visit the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, find your favorite wine and indulge in the magic of the place. Because there is something quite elusive here, charm and serenity, which feeds on the past, the art of viticulture and winemaking and the humor of the local people.
My name is Eric Clark and I am a world traveler. I have been around the world a few times and decided to help fund my travels by sharing my videos and pictures. I have been to almost every country and would be glad to give tips and pointers. Drop me a note. = )

I am very fortunate that I can spend a large part of my life travelling, thanks to the business I chose to run which allows me to do this. There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Eger is surrounded by many hills ideal to grow grapes for wine. The local Bikavér red cuvee can be interesting for wine enthusiasts, but there is also some excellent Pinot Noir as well. For those who enjoy white wines you have many options too, like the local cuvee known as Egri Csillag (Star of Eger), also some Rieslings or Chardonnays.
Eger is also a nice Area for those who want to go Hiking. Nature is close and there are many nice villages in the area to use as starting places for Hikes, since the Bükk National Park is right here!
Another Charming Little town in the Hungarian Countryside is Kőszeg. Also full of history and interesting stories:

Her cellar was one of the more traditional ones and her personality was so lovely we went back a few time to drink her family’s wine.
In addition to the wine cellars, there is also an area of restaurants where you can have lunch in between cellar hopping.
