The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km2) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.

The United States of America is a federal republic consisting of 50 states, a federal district (where the nation's seat of government–Washington, D.C.–is located), five major territories, and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America (also bordering Canada) and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
States are the primary subdivisions of the United States, and possess a number of powers and rights under the United States Constitution, such as regulating intrastate commerce, running elections, creating local governments, and ratifying constitutional amendments. Each state has its own constitution, grounded in republican principles, and government, consisting of three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. All states and their residents are represented in the federal Congress, a bicameral legislature consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state is represented by two Senators, while Representatives are distributed among the states in proportion to the most recent constitutionally mandated decennial census. Additionally, each state is entitled to select a number of electors to vote in the Electoral College, the body that elects the President of the United States, equal to the total of Representatives and Senators in Congress from that state.Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution grants to Congress the authority to admit new states into the Union. Since the establishment of the United States in 1776, the number of states has expanded from the original 13 to 50. Each new state has been admitted on an equal footing with the existing states.

Economy of the United States
The United States is the world's largest national economy, representing 22% of nominal global GDP and 17% of global GDP (PPP). The United States' GDP was estimated to be $17.914 trillion as of Q2 2015. The U.S. dollar is the currency most used in international transactions and is the world's foremost reserve currency. Several countries use it as their official currency, and in many others it is the de facto currency. The United States has a mixed economy and has maintained a stable overall GDP growth rate, a moderate unemployment rate, and high levels of research and capital investment. Its seven largest trading partners are Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, Germany, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
The US has abundant natural resources, a well-developed infrastructure, and high productivity. It has the world's ninth-highest per capita GDP (nominal) and tenth-highest per capita GDP (PPP) as of 2013. Americans have the highest average household and employee income among OECD nations, and in 2010 had the fourth highest median household income, down from second highest in 2007. It has been the world's largest national economy (not including colonial empires) since at least the 1890s.

SS United States
SS United States is a luxury passenger liner built in 1952 for United States Lines designed to capture the trans-Atlantic speed record.
Built at a cost of $79.4 million ($724 million in today's dollars) the ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the U.S. and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction. Even in her retirement, she retains the Blue Riband, the accolade given to the passenger liner crossing the Atlantic Ocean in regular service with the highest speed.
Her construction was subsidized by the U.S. government, since she was designed to allow conversion to a troopship should the need arise.United States operated uninterrupted in transatlantic passenger service until 1969. Since 1996 she has been docked at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia.
Design and construction
Inspired by the exemplary service of the British liners RMS Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, which transported hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops to Europe during World War II, the U.S. government sponsored the construction of a large and fast merchant vessel that would be capable of transporting large numbers of soldiers. Designed by renowned American naval architect and marine engineer William Francis Gibbs (1886–1967), the liner's construction was a joint effort between the United States Navy and United States Lines. The U.S. government underwrote $50 million of the $78 million construction cost, with the ship's operators, United States Lines, contributing the remaining $28 million. In exchange, the ship was designed to be easily converted in times of war to a troopship with a capacity of 15,000 troops, or to a hospital ship .

Institutions in the Southern Victory Series
The Southern Victory Series is a fan name given to a series of Harry Turtledove alternate history novels.
The Southern Victory Series includes the novel How Few Remain, and the Great War, American Empire, and Settling Accounts series. They detail events in four major eras between 1862 and 1945.
A brief synopsis
An alternate name of the series, Timeline-191, is taken from Robert E. Lee's Special Order 191, detailing the Army of Northern Virginia's invasion of the Union on September 10, 1862 during the American Civil War. In reality the orders were lost and recovered by a Union soldier, allowing General George B. McClellan to surprise Lee and force the Battle of Antietam. In this fictional timeline, Lee defeated the Army of the Potomac in a comprehensive victory outside of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, and then occupied Philadelphia.
In 1881, after the Confederacy purchased the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora, President James G. Blaine of the United States declared war. With the help of British and French forces, the Confederate States again defeat the United States in the Second Mexican War, forcing the latter to cede a portion of northern Maine to the Canadian province of New Brunswick. After this defeat, the United States turned to Germany for military assistance and training, and the national mood of the U.S. changed to desire of revenge against the enemies that surrounded the U.S.—Canada, from where Britain invaded the U.S., and the Confederacy.

The sheer scale of the united states wealth and influence is really really hard to fathom, even for macro-economists, sure there are GDP figures, trade balances and labor force figures, but they are best for telling the story of a normal national economy, and the United States are far from that, its consumer retail sector is bigger than all but 9 of the largest national economies in the world, California, one of its states has a bigger GDP figure than the united kingdom and the US has fifty states.
The U.S. economy goes beyond this though, it is the foundation for the world economy in the 20th and 21st centuries, and this influence isn’t caused by something so old fashioned as an empire, but rather industry. Today US companies can be seen dominating industries in economies all over the world, and at the same time, foreign companies from Europe and Asia fight endlessly to break into the US market, the largest and most influential consumer market in the world.
The U.S. economy is too large with too many facets to explore in a single video, so this will be made as a video series but for now, in this video, I want to explore how the United States of America got to where it is today.

Every year since 2001, the U.S. government has spent more money than it takes in, which means it has to borrow money to make up for the difference. The national debt is frequently discussed as a danger to future generations, but some economists say there’s no reason to get the national debt down to zero. One reason for that is without the debt, there would be no federal government securities, such as Treasury bonds, which provide investors a safe place to park their money while accruing interest. Most economist warn, however, that there’s a balancing act when it comes to the national debt. Watch the video above to learn more about why the U.S. can’t get a handle on the national debt and whether it even has to.

The United States of America, the wealthiest, most powerful nation on the planet by a very respectable margin. The sheer scale of the united states wealth and influence is really really hard to fathom, even for macro-economists, sure there are GDP figures, trade balances and labor force figures, but they are best for telling the story of a normal national economy, and the United States are far from that, its consumer retail sector is bigger than all but 9 of the largest national economies in the world, California, one of its states has a bigger GDP figure than the united kingdom and the US has fifty states.
The U.S. economy goes beyond this though, it is the foundation for the world economy in the 20th and 21st centuries, and this influence isn’t caused by something so old fashioned as an empire, but rather industry. Today US companies can be seen dominating industries in economies all over the world, and at the same time, foreign companies from Europe and Asia fight endlessly to break into the US market, the largest and most influential consumer market in the world.
The U.S. economy is too large with too many facets to explore in a single video, so this will be made as a video series but for now, in this video, I want to explore how the United States of America got to where it is today.

The U.S. national debt is nearly $33 trillion as of early September 2023. Every year since 2001, the U.S. government has spent more money than it takes in, which means it has to borrow money to make up for the difference. The national debt is frequently discussed as a danger to future generations, but some economists say there’s no reason to get the national debt down to zero. One reason for that is without the debt, there would be no federal government securities, such as Treasury bonds, which provide investors a safe place to park their money while accruing interest. Most economist warn, however, that there’s a balancing act when it comes to the national debt. Watch the video above to learn more about why the U.S. can’t get a handle on the national debt and whether it even has to.

Economists believe the U.S. could lose its ranking as the world's leading economy in the 21st century, as measured by gross domestic product. But the U.S. is set to extend its run through the 2020s, on the back of slower-than-expected growth trends in China. Premiering March 14, 2023, “Age of Easy Money” examines how the policies of the U.S. central bank, the Federal Reserve, ushered in an age of easy money — and explores the potential consequences of the Fed’s decision last year to start hiking interest rates at a historic pace in an effort to fight inflation.
This excerpt shows how many economic experts FRONTLINE spoke with alluded to a particular quote to describe the current economic moment, in which the risks and excesses that had been building in the age of easy money are beginning to surface.
“When interest rates start to rise, and the tide pulls out, as Warren Buffett would say ... you begin to see who's not been swimming with their shorts on,” Foroohar says in the clip.

37.9 million Americans are currently living in poverty, accounting for 11.6% of the total population. That’s despite the fact that America ranks first as the richest nation in the world in terms of GDP. Poverty in the U.S. is not only a humanitarian crisis but an economic one as well. About 11% of the federal budget, or $665 billion goes to economic security programs every year. Child poverty alone is estimated to cost the U.S. over $1 trillion based on the latest research. So how did poverty become such a big issue in the U.S. and why is it so difficult to end it?
