Originally, the station was to be named Marine Barracks, after the Washington Marine Barracks located a few blocks south of the station on 8th Street. However after lobbying from the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, the name was changed to Eastern Market. The station opened on July 1, 1977. Its opening coincided with the completion of 11.8 miles (19.0km) of rail between National Airport and RFK Stadium and the opening of an entire section of line, which included 16 stations in total, between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station to Stadium–Armory Station. Orange Line service to the station began upon the line's opening on November 20, 1978. Silver Line service at Eastern Market began on July 26, 2014.
The Eastern Market is a public market in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., housed in a 19th-century brick building. It is located on 7th Street SE, a few blocks east of the U.S. Capitol between North Carolina Avenue SE and C Street SE. Eastern Market was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Badly damaged by an early-morning fire in 2007, the market building reopened in the summer of 2009 following an extensive renovation.
Eastern Market also marks a smaller community within the Capitol Hill neighborhood by serving as an anchor point for other nearby stores and restaurants. It is served by a nearby eponymousstop on the Washington MetroBlue, Orange, and Silver Lines.

Eastern Market is part of ward 6 of DC's 8 wards. Nestled in what is known as the Capitol Hill neighborhood, this is the area bounded by North and South Capitol Streets on the west, 15th street on the east and H street on the north and by the Southeast southwest Freeway. Working adults, singles and families with young children largely populate the neighborhood of town houses. This is an old fashioned neighborhood where residents can do their shopping on a daily basis. Currently managed under the guidance of interim manager Barry Margeson. The flea market of Eastern Market has one of the most diverse markets in the nation. It host up to 100 exhibitors from five continents.
