The Germanic Tribes - The Ascent of Civilization - Full Historical Documentary
There is barely a country in Europe that cannot look back on Germanic roots. The term ‘Germanic’ actually refers to a number of tribes and clans that lived in Central and Northern Europe from the 6th century BC. Gaius Julius Caesar is said to have used the word when talking about the Gallic war. However, the Romans were full of contempt for the Germanic peoples, Tacitus calling their home a hideous blood-curdling place full of dark woods and swamplands. But who were the Germanic Tribes? And how did they leave their mark on Civilization?

Germanic Language Family
The Germanic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family spoken natively by a population of about 515 million people mainly in North America, Oceania, Southern Africa and Europe.
The common ancestor of all of the languages in this branch is called Proto-Germanic, also known as Common Germanic, which was spoken in about the middle of the 1st millennium BC in Iron Age Scandinavia. We continue our Units of History documentary series on one of the many "barbarian" foes from antiquity that all too often get stereotyped as wild brutes. In this full documentary episode though we dive deep into the much more nuanced history of the Germanic Warriors. We begin with an exploration of Germania itself which is quite difficult to define from a top down perspective. As a result we end up looking at their world from the bottom up as they would have seen it. This involves a huge social web that started at the basic family farm and eventually built its way up t...

They have traditionally been defined by the use of ancient and early medieval Germanic languages and are thus equated with Germanic-speaking peoples. The Romans named the area belonging to North-Central Europe in which Germanic peoples lived Germania, stretching East to West between the Vistula and Rhine rivers and north to south from Southern Scandinavia to the upper Danube. Scholars generally agree that it is possible to refer to Germanic-speaking peoples after 500 BCE. Between around 500 BCE and the beginning of the Common Era, archeological and linguistic evidence suggest that the Urheimat of the Proto-Germanic language, the ancestral idiom of all attested Germanic dialects, was primarily situated in the southern Jutland peninsula. Further information: Pytheas, Bastarnae, Sciri, Cimbrian War, and Gallic Wars According to some authors the Bastarnae or Peucini were the first Germani to be encountered by the Greco-Roman world and thus to be mentioned in historical records. They appear in historical sources going back as far as the 3rd century BCE through the 4th century CE.

Germany is a relatively young nation-state. United in 1871, it's even younger than the United States. However, the territories inhabited by the Germanic people have a rich history that reaches far back in prehistory and antiquity. Located in the heart of Europe, Germany witnessed centuries of conflicts, immigration, and negotiations.

The Germanic-speaking peoples speak an Indo-European language. The leading theory for the origin of Germanic languages, suggested by archaeological and genetic evidence, postulates a diffusion of Indo-European languages from the Pontic–Caspian steppe towards Northern Europe during the third millennium BCE, via linguistic contacts and migrations from the Corded Ware culture towards modern-day Denmark, resulting in cultural mixing with the earlier Funnelbeaker culture. The subsequent culture of the Nordic Bronze Age (c. 1700-c. 600 BCE) shows definite cultural and population continuities with later Germanic peoples, and is often supposed to have been the culture in which the Germanic Parent Language, the predecessor of the Proto-Germanic language, developed.
Generally, scholars agree that it is possible to speak of Germanic-speaking peoples after 500 BCE, although the first attestation of the name "Germani" is not until much later. Between around 500 BCE and the beginning of the Common Era, archeological and linguistic evidence suggest that the Urheimat ('original homeland') of the Proto-Germanic language, the ancestral idiom of all attested Germanic dialects, was primarily situated in the southern Jutland peninsula, from which Proto-Germanic speakers migrated towards bordering parts of Germany and along the sea-shores of the Baltic and the North Sea, an area corresponding to the extent of the late Jastorf culture.
According to some authors the Bastarnae or Peucini were the first Germani to be encountered by the Greco-Roman world and thus to be mentioned in historical records. They appear in historical sources going back as far as the 3rd century BCE through the 4th century CE. Another eastern people known from about 200 BCE, and sometimes believed to be Germanic-speaking, are the Sciri, who are recorded threatening the city of Olbia on the Black Sea. Late in the 2nd century BCE, Roman and Greek sources recount the migrations of the Cimbri, Teutones and Ambrones whom Caesar later classified as Germanic. The movements of these groups through parts of Gaul, Italy and Hispania resulted in the Cimbrian War (113–101 BCE) against the Romans, in which the Teutons and Cimbri were victorious over several Roman armies but were ultimately defeated.

Proto-Germanic, along with all of its descendants, is characterised by a number of unique linguistic features, most famously the consonant change known as Grimm's law. Early varieties of Germanic entered history with the Germanic tribes moving south from Scandinavia in the 2nd century BC, to settle in the area of today's northern Germany and southern Denmark.
The West Germanic languages include the three most widely spoken Germanic languages: English with around 360–400 million native speakers; German, with over 100 million native speakers; and Dutch, with 23 million native speakers. The main North Germanic languages are Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Faroese, which have a combined total of about 20 million speakers. The East Germanic branch included Gothic, Burgundian, and Vandalic, all of which are now extinct. The last to die off was Crimean Gothic, spoken until the late 18th century in some isolated areas of Crimea.

This involves a huge social web that started at the basic family farm and eventually built its way up to the clan and tribe level.
We discuss the weapons and armour of these Germanic warriors, how they trained, how they organized, and how they fought in battle. We then conclude with a summary of their service history which stretches over many centuries. Primarily this involves their interactions with the Roman Army starting from the Cimbrian War with Gaius Marius to the Gallic War with Julius Caesar during the Roman Republic and the later decades long struggle of the Germanic Wars that stretched out over the course of the Early Roman Empire. This latter conflict saw the famous events like the Battle of Teutoburg Forest and the Idistaviso. We cover it in more military history between the German and Roman Army during our Avenging Varus series.
