East Berlin existed between 1949 and 1990. It comprised the eastern regions of Berlin and consisted of the Sovietsector of Berlin that was established in 1945. The American, British, and French sectors became West Berlin, a part strongly associated with West Germany. East Berlin was the de factocapital of East Germany. From 13 August 1961 until 9 November 1989, East Berlin was separated from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall.
The official name that was used by the East German government changed over the course of years from "Greater Berlin" to "Democratic Berlin" to "Berlin, Capital of the GDR" or simply "Berlin." Within official usage, it had become more widespread since the 1970s to refer only to the Western part of the city with a different name ("Westberlin"), whilst calling the Eastern part simply "Berlin". (See also Naming conventions).
Overview
With the London Protocol from 1944, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union decided to divide Germany into three occupation zones and to establish a special area of Berlin, which was occupied by the three Allied Forces together. In May 1944, the Soviet Union installed a city government for the whole city that was called "Magistrate of Greater Berlin", which existed until 1947. After the war, the Allied Forces initially administrated the city together within the Allied Kommandatura, which served as the governing body of the city. However, in 1948 the Soviet representative left the Kommandatura and the common administration broke apart during the following months. In the Soviet sector, a separate city government was established, which continued to call itself "Magistrate of Greater Berlin".
The Berlin Lions Club "Berlin Fair" is an agricultural fair that began in 1882 and has taken place every autumn since 1945 on the Berlin Fairgrounds at 430 Beckley Road in East Berlin.
Berlin (/ˈbɜːrlɪn/BUR-lin) is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 19,866 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated in 1785. The geographic center of Connecticut is located in the town. Berlin is residential and industrial, and is served by the Amtrakstationof the same name. Berlin also has two hamlets: Kensington and East Berlin.
Town seal
The greatest boom to Berlin industry resulted from the decision of the Patterson brothers to start their business on West Street (now called Lower Lane). For twenty years until 1760, they kept their work in the family selling their wares from a basket. When demand increased they took apprentices into the shop and engaged peddlers to travel throughout the colonies selling the shiny, useful articles (the seal of the Town of Berlin shows such a "Yankee peddler" in eighteenth-century dress with a basket under his arm, a pack on his back full of tinware). As others learned the trade, they soon set up shop and hired apprentices. There were so many that the noise of the whitesmiths and their hammering could be heard in every part of town.
In 2010, the building was assessed in preparation for a rehabilitation project to address interior water damage and the need to replace the electrical and heating and air conditioning systems. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Transportation plans to add a new commuter service called the Hartford Line in collaboration with Amtrak and the federal government that will run between New Haven and Springfield, Massachusetts. As of late 2015, funding had been secured and the service is scheduled to begin operation in early 2018.
Noted features of the historic depot include prominent brick quoins and arches, as well as large arched tripartite windows embellished with colorful stained glass. The waiting room is still dominated by the original ticket office, whose corners are gently rounded. Resembling those in other early 20th century New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad facilities, it is a three-sided structure placed against the western wall of the station; the bottom third is covered in bead board while the upper portion features recessed rectangular panels. Dentil molding finishes off the upper edge of the office wall. With many of its interior finishes largely unaltered, Berlin is often considered one of the best preserved of Connecticut’s small 19th century depots.
"Überlin" is a song by American alternative rock band R.E.M.. It was released as the second single from their fifteenth and final studio album Collapse into Now on January 25, 2011.
Even though the Wall has since been dismantled, the sculpture was bought by the city from Mrs. Matschinsky-Denninghoff to commemorate the unfortunate chapter in German history.
History
Berlin was one of eight sculptures designed during "Skulpturenboulevard Kurfürstendamm" (Boulevard of Sculptures: Kurfürstendamm), an event commissioned by the city of West Berlin to celebrate Berlin's 750th anniversary in 1987. Of the eight sculptures unveiled, three were allowed to remain past the anniversary year (Berlin, Pyramide, and Cadillacs in Form der nackten Maja); the city and Deutsche Bank acquired Berlin after its original lease had expired.

East Germany, The Berlin Wall And 30 Years Of German Reunification | Meet the Germans
October 3 2020 marks 30 years since German reunification. But how did the country become divided into East and West in the first place? And how united do Germans really feel that their country is today? Rachel heads to Berlin and Potsdam to find out more about communism, capitalism and "Ostalgie."
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. Every two weeks she explores a new topic – from allotment gardens to money to language. This week it's all about German reunification and what led up to it.
Are you curious about anything to do with the GDR or German reunification? Let us know in the comments!

The Berlin Wall (1961-1989)
The Berlin wall would become a symbol of ideological division and suppression of human rights during the Cold War.
In August 1961, the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic of East Germany began construction of the wall and placement of barbed wire between west Berlin and the East.

Visiting East Berlin in 1986
Before the Cola wars had brought down the Berlin wall, twelve-year-old me went to East Berlin. It was communist, full of weird cars, and goose-stepping germans. Enjoy this glimpse into East Berlin from the perspective of a spoiled American kid.

Life Behind the Berlin Wall - Full Video
Why did people risk their lives to escape East Berlin? Take a country and its capital city. Cut them in half. Build a wall through the middle of the capital to keep the parts – and the people – separated. Now install a command economy on one side and a free market on the other. Which side will provide a better life for its people?
Following World War II, Germany and its capital, Berlin, were divided exactly like that. What was the result of this economic experiment? Learn from people who lived on both sides of the Berlin Wall about how vastly different life was from one side to the other and discover why people were willing to risk their lives to escape East Berlin.

Footage of street scenes and daily life in East Berlin, the capital of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR), also known as East Germany (Ostdeutschland). This footage was filmed on 12 July 1989. While the first pictures of the border guards patrolling the Berlin Wall are the kind most often associated with East Berlin, as the camera crew journey into the city, the viewer quickly becomes acquainted with the ordinary rhythms of civilian life.

Before the Cola wars had brought down the Berlin wall, twelve-year-old me went to East Berlin. It was communist, full of weird cars, and goose-stepping germans. Enjoy this glimpse into East Berlin from the perspective of a spoiled American kid.
I made these as my final project for Casey Neistat's Monthly Course

Why did people risk their lives to escape East Berlin? Take a country and its capital city. Cut them in half. Build a wall through the middle of the capital to keep the parts – and the people – separated. Now install a command economy on one side and a free market on the other. Which side will provide a better life for its people?
Following World War II, Germany and its capital, Berlin, were divided exactly like that. What was the result of this economic experiment? Learn from people who lived on both sides of the Berlin Wall about how vastly different life was from one side to the other and discover why people were willing to risk their lives to escape East Berlin.
