The duke's family descended from Sir Edmund Sheffield, second cousin of Henry VIII, who in 1547 was raised to the Peerage of England as Baron Sheffield and in 1549 was murdered in the streets of Norwich during Kett's Rebellion. His grandson, the 3rd Baron, served as Lord Lieutenant of Yorkshire from 1603 to 1619 and was created Earl of Mulgrave in 1626, also in the Peerage of England. On the death of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby in 1735, all these titles became extinct. The Sheffield family estates passed to the 2nd duke's half-brother Charles Herbert—the illegitimate son of the 1st Duke by Frances Stewart—who changed his surname to Sheffield as a condition of the 2nd duke's will, thereby becoming Charles Herbert Sheffield. Charles Herbert Sheffield was created a Baronet in 1755 and is the ancestor of the Sheffield Baronets, of Normanby.
The 1st Duke of Buckingham was succeeded by his grandson, Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, who aided Richard III in his claiming the throne in 1483 (Edward IV of England's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville having been declared null and void and Edward's sons illegitimate by Act of Parliament Titulus Regius), but who then led a revolt against Richard and was executed later that same year. His titles were forfeited along with the dukedom.
Buckingham was declared the county town of Buckinghamshire in the 10th century when it was made the capital of the newly formed shire of Buckingham until Aylesbury took over this role early in the 18th century.
Buckingham has a variety of restaurants and pubs, typical of a small market town. It has a number of local shops, both national and independent. Market days are Tuesday and Saturday which take over Market Hill and the High Street cattle pens. Buckingham is twinned with Mouvaux, France.
History
Buckingham and the surrounding area has been settled for some time with evidence of Roman settlement found in several sites close the River Great Ouse, including a temple south of the A421 at Bourton Grounds which was excavated in the 1960s and dated to the 3rd century AD. A possible Roman building was identified at Castle Fields in the 19th century. Pottery, kiln furniture and areas of burning found at Buckingham industrial estate suggest the site of some early Roman pottery kilns here.
1885-1918: The Municipal Borough of Buckingham, the Sessional Divisions of Ashendon, Buckingham, Newport, and Stony Stratford, and part of the Sessional Division of Winslow.
1918-1950: The Municipal Borough of Buckingham, the Urban Districts of Bletchley, Linslade, and Newport Pagnell, the Rural Districts of Buckingham, Newport Pagnell, Stratford and Wolverton, Wing, and Winslow, in the Rural District of Aylesbury the civil parishes of Ashenden, Chearsley, Grendon Underwood, Kingswood, Ludgershall, Woodham, and Wotton Underwood, and the part of the Rural District of Long Grendon which was not included in the Aylesbury constituency.
1950-1974: The Municipal Borough of Buckingham, the Urban Districts of Bletchley, Linslade, Newport Pagnell, and Wolverton, and the Rural Districts of Buckingham, Newport Pagnell, Wing, and Winslow.
One Buckingham corresponds to the quadrupole moment resulting from two opposing dipole moments but an equal magnitude of 1 Debye which are separated by a distance of 1 Angstrom, a typical bond length. This is analogous to the Debye unit for the dipole moment of two opposing charges of 1×10−10 statcoulomb separated by 1 Angstrom, and the name Buckingham for the unit was in fact suggested by Peter Debye in 1963 in honour of Buckingham.
Duke Of Buckingham: George Villiers His Life, Loves and Legacy
George Villiers 1st Duke of Buckingham, His Life, Loves and Legacy. The Duke of Buckingham was a very controversial historical English figure. Handsome and ambitious, he rose with astonishing speed through the ranks of the aristocracy yet, he was generally regarded with suspicion and dislike by the rest of the court. Villiers was the last in a succession of handsome young favourites of the monarchy on whom King James I and Charles I lavished affection and patronage. He also had what can only be described as a very sketchy political and military record. Subsequent events showed that he was a symptom rather than the cause of a malfunctioning English state.

George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham
Here I talk about the life of one of the most important men in early modern English History, George Villiers. The favourite of both James I and his son Charles, Buckingham was without a doubt one of the most significant causes of the English Civil War. His trial, and those involved, set the stage for not only the powers of parliament during and after the Republican Period, but also helped difine the faction which would rule England for over 15 years.

The story of George Villiers and King James I & VI reads like a stylish, sexy and scandalous historic drama series. It probably hasn’t been made into one before because, until recently, Hollywood wasn’t too keen on portraying homosexual characters and relationships, authentically. However, the new Starz series, Mary and George promises to finally introduce the wider world to the dashing country commoner who won the heart of a king and was raised so high he had no where to go but plummeting back to earth. The series emphasizes George’s relationship with his ambitions mother, Mary Beaumont who encouraged and facilitated his royal seduction. So let’s travel back to the Stuart court of England and meet the real Mary and George Villiers. Get out your cups and saucers, because I will be spilling a lot of tea with this one.

I shudder with delight at shrimp-fork-related drama.

I have been asked, in my comments section, to talk about the reality behind the portrayal of the Duke of Buckingham in “The Tudors”; this led me to think about his family as whole and how they were, allegedly, a nest of traitors…

Its my Edward Stafford video with the song Seid Bereit [english title] I cannot name the english title cause then I would break against any copyright rule, weird Youtube. =D Enjoy it!

-The Tragic Fall of Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham | On This Day in Tudor History
On this day in Tudor history, 17th May 1521, Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, met his tragic end on Tower Hill. As a man of royal blood and significant influence, his rise and fall were marked by the turbulent politics of the Tudor court.
I explore the dramatic events that led to Buckingham's arrest and execution for treason. Despite his prestigious lineage and early favor with King Henry VIII, Buckingham’s ambitions and connections made him a target in the perilous world of Tudor politics.
Join me as I uncover:
- Buckingham's illustrious family background and his rise in the Tudor court
- The charges of treason against him and the investigation ordered by Henry VIII
- His arrest, trial, and the testimonies that sealed his fate
- The final moments of his life and his execution on Tower Hill
Dive into this gripping episode to learn more about the complex and often dangerous nature of Tudor loyalty and ambition. Don't miss out on this dramatic story from the annals of Tudor history!

season 2 episode 5 -They attend a dinner for the Duke of Buckingham .At that dinner, Bertha cozies up to the Duke, hilariously swapping out seating place cards so she is seated next to him (love when this show leans into hijinks!) as her plan to befriend him and make him like her more than he likes Mrs. Winterton is put in motion. This scene is yet another opportunity to lean into drama based around the way flatware is laid out, a callback to last year’s French Vs. English-style table setting scandal. I shudder with delight at shrimp-fork-related drama.
