The Dublin Bay 21 footer yacht is a one-design wooden sailing boat designed for sailing in Dublin Bay.
The seven yachts were designed by Alfred Mylne and built between 1903 and 1906 under a commission from the old Dublin Bay Sailing Club to encourage inexpensive one-design racing in recognotion of the success of the Water Wag one-design of 1887 and the Colleen Class of 1897. They may be the oldest class of racing keelboat yacht in the world.
The first race took place on 19 June 1903 in Dublin Bay.
List of boats
The seven sisters
Estelle built by Hollwey, 1903.
Garavogue built by Kelly, 1903.
Innisfallen built by Hollwey, 1903.
Maureen built by Hollwey, 1903.
Oola built by Kelly, 1905.
Naneen built by Clancy, 1905.
Geraldine built by Hollwey, 1908.
The class is now defunct and the fleet lay in various states of disrepair in Jack Tyrrell's boatyard in Arklow, Co. Wicklow. The fleet were taken out of the water in 1986 after Hurricane Charley ruined active Dublin Bay 21 fleet racing in August of that year. Two 21s sank in the storm, suffering the same fate as their sister ship Estelle four years earlier.
The Dublin Bay 24 footer yacht is a one-design wooden sailing boat designed for sailing in Dublin Bay.
It was designed in the mid-1930s, under a commission from a group of Dublin Bay owners, members of the Royal Alfred Yacht Club, yacht designer Alfred Mylne produced the largest one-design yacht in Europe. The classic lines prompted one owner to declare it a ”six-metre with a proper amount of beam” and the sea-keeping qualities, particularly downwind in heavy conditions were much admired. Although used now as dayboats, some of them have raced and cruised offshore in the past, including Fastnet Races, the Northwest coast of Norway & throughout Scotland.
Built at the Isle of Bute, their building was disturbed by the war so the first boat was not delivered until 1946. Eventually eight hulls were constructed and seven of them raced for many years in Dublin Bay.
List of Boats and their sail numbers:
Fenestra
Vandra (lost)
Euphanzel
Zephyra
Adastra
Harmony
Periwinkle
Arandora
The original five were Euphanzel, Fenestra, Vandra, Zephra and Adastra. These were later joined by Harmony and Arandora. Periwinkle stayed in Scotland.
Dublin Bay (Irish:Cuan Bhaile Átha Cliath) is a C-shaped inlet of the Irish Sea on the east coast of Ireland. The bay is about 10 kilometres wide along its north-south base, and 7km in length to its apex at the centre of the city of Dublin; stretching from Howth Head in the north to Dalkey Point in the south. North Bull Island is situated in the northwest part of the bay, where one of two major inshore sand banks lay, and features a 5km long sandy beach, Dollymount Strand, fronting an internationally recognised wildfowl reserve. Many of the rivers of Dublin reach the Irish Sea at Dublin Bay: the River Liffey, with the River Dodder flow received less than 1km inland, River Tolka, and various smaller rivers and streams.
The metropolitan area of the city of Dublin surrounds three sides of the bay (the north, west, and south), while the Irish Sea lies to the east. Dublin was founded by the Vikings at the point where they were able to ford the River Liffey with the first wattle bridge up from the estuary. The city spread from its birthplace, around what is now the James's Gate area, out along the coastline, northeast towards Howth and southeast towards Dalkey.
Dublin (/ˈdʌblᵻn/, Irish:Baile Átha Cliath[blʲaːˈklʲiəh]) is the capital and largest city of Ireland. Dublin is in the province of Leinster on Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey. The city has an urban area population of 1,273,069. The population of the Greater Dublin Area, as of 2011, was 1,801,040 persons.
Dublin is administered by a City Council. The city is listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city, with a ranking of "Alpha-", placing it among the top thirty cities in the world. It is a historical and contemporary centre for education, the arts, administration, economy and industry.
NorwegianVikings invaded the territory around Dublin in the 9th century, establishing the NorseKingdom of Dublin, the earliest and longest-lasting Norse kingdom in the British Isles, excepting the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. This corresponded to most of present-day County Dublin. The Norse referred to the kingdom as Dyflin, which is derived fromIrish Dubh Linn, meaning "black pool". The first reference to the Vikings comes from the Annals of Ulster and the first entry for 841 AD reads: "Pagans still on Lough Neagh". It is from this date onward that historians get references to ship fortresses or longphorts being established in Ireland. It may be safe to assume that the Vikings first over-wintered in 840–841 AD. The actual location of the longphort of Dublin is still a hotly debated issue. Norse rulers of Dublin were often co-kings, and occasionally also Kings of Jórvík in what is now Yorkshire.
Over time, the rulers of Dublin became increasingly Gaelicized. They began to exhibit a great deal of Gaelic and Norse cultural syncretism, and are often referred to as Norse-Gaels.
The city of Dublin was accounted a county of itself, although it remained connected with County Dublin for certain purposes. A Topographical Directory of Ireland, published in 1837, describes the Parliamentary history of the city.
The city returns two members to the Imperial parliament; the right of election, formerly vested in the corporation, freemen, and 40s. freeholders, has been extended to the £10 householders, and £20 and £10 leaseholders for the respective terms of 14 and 20 years, by the act of the 2nd of William IV., cap. 88. The number of voters registered at the first general election under that act was 7041, of which number, 5126 voted. The limits of the city, for electoral purposes, include an area of 3538 statute acres, the boundaries of which are minutely detailed in the Appendix; the number of freemen is about 3500, of whom 2500 are resident and 1000 non-resident, and the number of £10 houses is 16,000: the sheriffs are the returning officers.

Amazing Tsunami in Dublin Bay Ireland!
As I was shooting this video I could see that the water was disappearing fast! This is the 'pre-effect' of a Tsunami where the volume of water displaced by the event, (here the ship), quickly draws out all other water so seabed goes dry and then very quickly fills again with the tsunami wave. Shows how dangerous a tsunami is and how fast it moves and can catch people out!
I am, by the way, a scientist! It's a tsunami but on a micro scale. I'm demonstrating the effect that can be seen all over the world where ships sail on a relatively shallow draft.

The landscape of an Irish heart Is wild and strong and free It’s brave and proud And laughs right out loud And is not as green as it seems You can drink like the Irish And dance like the Irish And laugh with your eyes full of joy But none can love with all of his heart Like my Dublin boy The stories of an Irish heart Are long and misted with tears They’re covered in blood And sung at the pub For nigh on hundreds of years You can drink like the Irish And dance like the Irish And laugh with your eyes full of joy But none can love with all of his heart Like my Dublin boy The roaming of an Irish heart Will carry far and wide With a yearning for home And sorrow in song Longing for the Green Isle You can drink like the Irish And dance like the Irish And laugh with your eyes full of joy But none can love with all of his heart
