Slim Smith (born Keith Smith, 1948, Kingston, Jamaica, died 1973) was a ska, rocksteady and reggae singer. In their book Reggae: The Rough Guide (1997), Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton described Smith as "the greatest vocalist to emerge in the rocksteady era".
Biography
Smith first came to prominence as a member of the Victors Youth Band, who were highly praised at the 1964 Jamaican Festival. He subsequently became a founding member and lead vocalist of The Techniques, who recorded primarily with Duke Reid for his Treasure Isle label. In 1964 they recorded several songs for Byron Lee, two of which, "Don't Do It" and "No One", were included on the The Real Jamaica Ska LP released by Epic Records and co-produced by Curtis Mayfield. After the Techniques disbanded in 1965, he formed The Uniques, who released a handful of singles including the R&B influenced "Do Me Good" released on Ken Lack's Caltone records in 1966.
In 1969 Slim Smith commenced recording for Prince Buster and Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, the main rival to Duke Reid. His Studio One recordings brilliantly highlight his passionate, soulful voice, which had an almost manic edge, and confirm him as one of Jamaica's greatest singers. His hits from this period include "The New Boss", "Hip Hug" and "Rougher Yet", many of which were later compiled for the album Born To Love. In 1967 he formed a new version of The Uniques, and commenced his association with producer Bunny Lee. They topped the Jamaican hit parade with "Let Me Go Girl", but after recording one album, Absolutely The Uniques, Smith left the group, staying with Lee to concentrate on a solo career.
The album was a compilation of Williamson's first singles for Checker, from "Don't Start Me to Talkin'" b/w "All My Love in Vain" through "Dissatisfied" b/w "Cross My Heart".
The first session that Williamson recorded for Checker was on August 12, 1955 where he recorded "Don't Start Me to Talkin'" and "All My Love in Vain", which were released as a single a month later in September. On January 7, 1956 he recorded "Let Me Explain". The single "Keep It to Yourself" b/w "The Key (To Your Door)" was recorded on August 7, 1956. "Fattening Frogs for Snakes" b/w "I Don't Know" was recorded on February 6, 1957 and was released either in late May or early June. "99" was recorded on September 1, 1957 and was released as the B-side of "Born Blind" in late January or early February 1958. The single "Cross My Heart" b/w "Dissatisfied" was recorded at the same session. "Wake Up Baby" b/w "Your Funeral and My Trial" was the last song on Down and Out Blues to be recorded on March 27, 1958.

On doorsteps and in alleyways I see these fools passed out At any time of the day Crashed out in a bed of piss Empty bottle cradled in their arms. So tell me Who's job is it to tend these few people? Back to self-sufficiency and respect I turn my head it puts chills in my heart If I give you some change to clear my mind Would I have played my part? There's a man who has a dream But never seems to make it 'Cause everytime he gets some, someone tries to take it. A second chance at life, no one will give him In an alley wat is where he's livin' You see him there you walk by laughing and smirking Thinking to yourself it's only his fault, he ain't working. That might be true but it's only half the story so Kick back while we tell you his story. He came back from the war a veteran The only thing he learned to do was kill and shoot a gun. That comes in handy when you're fighting a war But when you came back to society you need much more. So all he had was terror in his mind No job skills so a job he couldn't find. The only thing he had was memories Of his friends being killed and crying and dying babies. So he grabbled bottle for an escape From all the mental torment that the war had made. Now you're calling him a bum 'cause he can't get none While you're sitting at home not willing to get some. Sharing and caring is what he needs now Some support for his marals, some help for his ego. So he can go to the top where every man can And all he really needs is a helping hand. So tell me Who's job is it to tend these few people? Back to self-sufficiency and respect I turn my head it puts chills in my heart If I give you some change to clear my mind Would I have played my part? Cold dark and lonely Broken and abused Homeless hungry and hated Forgotten Only remembered on the streets
