Tour Scotland travel video of Doune Castle sited on a wooded bend where the Ardoch Burn flows into the River Teith in the Stirling district of central Scotland. Doune is a popular filming location and has featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones and Outlander. Doune Castle was originally built in the thirteenth century, then probably damaged in the Scottish Wars of Independence, before being rebuilt in its present form in the late 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, the son of King Robert II of Scotland, and Regent of Scotland from 1388 until his death. Duke Robert's stronghold has survived relatively unchanged and complete, and the whole castle was traditionally thought of as the result of a single period of construction at this time. The castle is a fine example of late medieval military architecture. It features a central courtyard surrounded by high curtain walls and towers. The gatehouse, with its imposing wooden doors and portcullis are particularly impressive.
Doune Castle is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors interested in both its history and its connection to film and television. Visitors can explore the castle's interior, including the great hall and various rooms, and enjoy panoramic views from the battlements.

Colonel David Stirling
David Stirling was a British Army officer who is best known for founding the Special Air Service (SAS), one of the most elite and renowned special forces units in the world.
David Stirling was born on November 15, 1915, in Stirlingshire, Scotland. He came from a privileged background, as his family owned the nearby Keir estate in Scotland.
Stirling initially joined the British Army and served as a lieutenant in the Scots Guards during World War II. However, he soon became dissatisfied with conventional military operations and believed that a more unconventional and agile force was needed to combat the Axis powers.
In July 1941, while recovering from injuries sustained in a parachute jump, Stirling conceived the idea of forming a special forces unit that could carry out hit-and-run raids behind enemy lines. He pitched his idea to British authorities, and the Special Air Service (SAS) was officially formed in July 1941, with Stirling as its founder and commanding officer.
Under Stirling's leadership, the SAS conducted daring and highly successful raids in North Africa, Italy, and France during World War II. These operations targeted enemy airfields, supply lines, and infrastructure, causing significant disruption to Axis forces.
After the war, Stirling continued to be involved in military affairs and special operations. He was promoted to the rank of colonel and remained connected to the SAS. However, he left the Army in 1958.
David Stirling led an adventurous life that included various pursuits such as motorsports and exploration. He also maintained a strong interest in security and defence matters.
Even today, he is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern special forces operations. The SAS he founded has continued to evolve and remains a highly respected and effective military unit. His innovative ideas and leadership have had a lasting impact on the way special operations are conducted worldwide.
David Stirling passed away on November 4, 1990, but his legacy lives on through the continued operations and reputation of the Special Air Service.
The nearby Argaty Red Kite Centre offers visitors the opportunity to see these magnificent birds up close and learn about their conservation efforts. @explorescotland

What village in Scotland is home to a medieval castle that was occupied by the Jacobites, Mary Queen of Scots and the uncrowned King of Scotland? It’s Doune of course.
Today, I’ve taken you to Doune, and we’re going to explore Doune Castle.
Doune in Scottish Gaelic means “the fort.” The village is located eight miles northwest of Stirling on the River Teith. Doune Castle has featured in Outlander, Monty Python’s Holy Grail, and in the pilot episode of Games of Thrones, where it was Winterfell, the seat of power of the House of Stark.
Mary, Queen of Scots stayed at Doune Castle on various occasions during her reign in the 16th century.
During the Jacobite rising of 1745, Doune Castle was occupied by Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie". The Jacobites used the castle as a prison for government troops who were captured at the Battle of Falkirk Muir in 1746, which was a Jacobite victory.
Some captives escaped the makeshift prison by tying bed sheets together and climbing out of a castle window. One of those prisoners was John Witherspoon, who later went on to sign the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776.
An early version of Doune castle was likely built in the 13th century, but it was damaged during the first Scottish War of Independence. It was rebuilt in a way close to its present form in the late 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, a man who’s life story sounds like a plot line from Game of Thrones. His story is full of power, rivalry and murder. A Machiavellian politician who had a thirst for power, he is sometimes referred to as the uncrowned King of Scotland.

The castle passed to the crown in 1425, when Albany's son was executed, and was used as a royal hunting lodge and dower house. In the later 16th century, Doune became the property of the Earls of Moray. The castle saw military action during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Glencairn's rising in the mid 17th century, and during the Jacobite Risings of the late 17th century and 18th century. By 1800 the castle was ruined, but restoration works were carried out in the 1880s, prior to its passing into state care in the 20th century. The castle was used as a stand in for the fictional Castle Leoch in the TV adaptation of the Outlander series of novels

Political blooper: MP's Scottish accent baffles British parliamentarian
Members of the British parliament broke into laughter on October 18 when New-Zealand born Tory MP, Paul Beresford, visibly struggled to understand his Scottish colleague who was speaking with an accent.
Beresford initially apologized to Scottish National Party's (SNP) David Linden before asking him to repeat his question. But after a second attempt he sheepishly suggested Linden speak more slowly.
After two failed attempts in the miscommunication, Deputy Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, suggested they resolve the matter by letter.
