The Donkey Kong Country (DKC) video game series is a series of platform video games originally developed by Rare and later Retro Studios, and published by Nintendo. It is a spin-off from the original Donkey Kong series. In it, players control Donkey Kong and his friends and must complete a series of sidescrolling levels and defeat numerous enemies and bosses to reach the games' main goal.
The original Donkey Kong Country trilogy was originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System between 1994 and 1996, and was developed by Rare. The first game was later ported to the Game Boy Color and the trilogy to the Game Boy Advance and Virtual Console service on Wii. The original trilogy was followed by a game on the Nintendo 64 entitled Donkey Kong 64 (called Donkey Kong Country 64 early in its development). Another Donkey Kong game was in development for the GameCube, but after Microsoft's acquisition of Rare in 2002, the development of future Donkey Kong Country games stopped. Several experimental spin-off titles that utilised the DK Bongos were released between 2003 to 2005. However, Retro Studios revived the Donkey Kong Country series in 2010 with the launch of Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii, and later the Nintendo 3DS. The most recent title in the series is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U.
The game is set on "Donkey Kong Island" and centres around Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong, who must recover their stolen hoard of bananas from King K. Rool and the Kremlings. Development of the game first began shortly after Rare's Tim and Chris Stamper ran experiments with a Silicon Graphics workstation, rendering realistic 3D sprites. Nintendo became interested in Rare's work and soon acquired 49% of the company which culminated in the production of a new title using Alias and SGI technology for the SNES console. The Stamper brothers expressed an interest to create a standalone Donkey Kong game, and assembled a team of 12 to work on the game over an 18-month development cycle.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a 2014 side-scrollingplatformervideo game developed by Retro Studios, with assistance from Monster Games, and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. Originally slated to be released in November 2013, it was delayed until December 6, then again until February 14, 2014. The game was released in Japan on February 14, 2014, in North America and Europe on February 21, 2014 and in Australia on February 22, 2014. The fifth installment in the main Donkey Kong Country series, and the first in high-definition, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the direct sequel to the 2010 Wii game, Donkey Kong Country Returns.
The story revolves around Diddy Kong and his girlfriend, Dixie Kong, who try to rescue Donkey Kong after he is abducted by King K. Rool. The game is set on "Crocodile Isle", in which there are eight worlds of varying environments, totalling to 47 levels. The game utilises the same Silicon Graphics technology from the original, which features the use of pre-rendered 3D imagery. Diddy's Kong Quest received critical acclaim. Praise was directed at its graphics, gameplay and varying colour palette. However, retrospective reviews expressed scepticism over its lack of ambition and change from the original. It was the second best selling game of 1995 and the sixth best-selling game on the SNES.
101% longplay (this game has an extra %, it's a tradition with the DKC games). All bonus rooms and KONG letters are shown.
There is a bit of a weird glitch involving the KONG letters that happens a few times throughout this longplay. Basically what happens is this: I get a certain number of KONG letters, I collect three animal tokens, I play an animal mini-game and then get taken back to the main level. When I get the next KONG letter, the game acts like I didn't get the previous KONG letters that I got before the animal mini-game! This glitch isn't game-breaking or anything, but it may confuse some people. So if you see the game acting like I didn't collect certain KONG letters, rest assured that I actually did get them.

Donkey Kong Country Video Walkthrough
This is a video walkthrough / playthrough / runthrough / etc of the SNES game Donkey Kong Country.
Firstly, let me say I'm pretty sure I collect all the letters in each stage, though you'll notice that sometimes I end a stage looking like I missed a K or an O. It seems the reason that happened is because after collecting a letter, before I get to a checkpoint barrel, I happen to collect an animal token which takes me to a bonus stage. After the bonus stage, I restart the level, and the letter is then missing. I noticed this doesn't happen when I go into a bonus stage after hitting a checkpoint.
And it was almost a perfect run, but I did lose a monkey a few times...
I remember a loooooong time ago, I had received a promotional VHS tape from Nintendo showing off this game. At the time...

The Making of Donkey Kong Country & Killer Instinct / Pre-rendered graphics
As a follow-up to my Aladdin / Cel animation video I decided to give the Donkey Kong video a huge overhaul. Both videos will be part of a mini series about the influence of technological advancements in tools and development processes in 16-bit video games. Part one: Cel animation, Part two: 3D packages, I'm planning to do a 3rd video eventually. I've also added Killer Instinct (one of my favorite arcades games ever) and the awesome Donkey Kong Country 2 to this video.

This was recorded on an emulator (snes9x) with a USB controller in one sitting; no save states or re-recording tools were used. I died a bunch of times during the recording, but the deaths have all been edited out, so none of them appear in the video.
Lastly, it's probably best that I explain what I did from 1:04:21 - 1:04:32. In the level Oil Drum Alley, in one of its bonus rooms you have to get three bananas, then a barrel will appear. You then have to use that barrel to break the right wall to enter a bonus room within a bonus room (!). To do it properly you need to grab the barrel as soon as you can, then hold right while jumping. This is kind of tricky to pull off if you don't know what you're doing, so I thought I'd bring mention to it in case it confuses anyone.

As a follow-up to my Aladdin / Cel animation video I decided to give the Donkey Kong video a huge overhaul.

At the time I thought it was freaking amazing (I still do...A shame what happened to Rare though...Tsk tsk...) Needless to say, I've been playing this game for quite some time....
