Dobbs Ferry was ranked seventh in the list of the top 10 places to live in New York State for 2014 according to the national online real estate brokerage Movoto. Dobbs Ferry is also the first village in New York State certified as a Climate Smart Community, honored in 2014 with the highest level given out in the state.
History
Named after Jeremiah Dobbs, a descendent of William Dobbs, of Swedish and Dutch ancestry , whose family ran a ferry service begun in 1698,http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrockla/history.htm that traversed the Hudson River at this location,. Jeremiah [Dobbs] was a fisherman and settled near the southern part of what is now Dobbs Ferry, and he "'added to his meager income by ferriage of occasional travelers across the Hudson. He used a style of boat know at that day as a periauger, a canoe hollowed out of a solid log. . . From this primitive ferry the village took its name.'"
The Dobbs FerryMetro-North Railroad station serves residents of Dobbs Ferry, New York via the Hudson Line. Trains leave for New York City every 25 to 35 minutes on weekday rush-hour (peak trains). Trains run hourly during non-peak times, and on weekends and holidays. It is 19.9 miles from Grand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is about 44 minutes by local train.
Dobbs Ferry Station can be traced at least as far back as 1851 with its origins as part of the Hudson River Railroad. The current station house, which was built in 1889 by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, became a Penn Central station upon the merger between NYC and Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 like many NYCRR stations in Westchester County, until it was taken over by Conrail in 1976, and then by Metro-North Railroad in 1983. It was restored between 2006 and 2008 by Metro-North.
Platforms and tracks
This station has two high-level side platforms each eight cars long. The west platform next to Track 4 is generally used by southbound trains. The east platform next to Track 3 is generally used by northbound trains.
In the United States, public schools belong to school districts, which are governed by school boards. Each district is an independent special-purpose government, or dependent school systems, under the guidelines of state government and local school boards. A school district is a legally separate body corporate and politic. School districts are local governments with powers similar to that of a town or a county including taxation and eminent domain, except in Virginia, whose school divisions have no taxing authority and must depend on another local government (county, city, or town) for funding. Its governing body, which is typically elected by direct popular vote but may be appointed by other governmental officials, is called a school board, board of trustees, board of education, school committee, or the like. This body appoints a superintendent, usually an experienced public school administrator, to function as the district's chief executive for carrying out day-to-day decisions and policy implementations. The school board may also exercise a quasi-judicial function in serious employee or studentdiscipline matters.
School District 53 Okanagan Similkameen is a school district that serves fragments of the southern Okanagan and lower Similkameen regions, which include Cawston, Hedley, Keremeos, Okanagan Falls, Oliver, and Osoyoos, totaling to six communities in the district, all of which are in British Columbia, Canada. Its main "maintenance department" office is held in Oliver, consisting of ten schools, five of which are elementary, three are high or secondary schools, while two are alternative schools. This district's superintendent is Beverly Young, while 2,665 students attend schools in it; there are 480 employees for the Okanagan Simlkammen school district. Their motto is "Learning Today for Living Tomorrow", and all places within the district are towns or villages.
In addition to the conventional school programs, School District 53 offers three adult learning outlets, an outreach school, three early learning centres, as well as one elementary hockey academy; the district supports Aboriginal people. It provides a school bus transportation service, in order for children to get to their school and home, being responsible to the Director of Facilities. This bus service has been considered for expansion. School District 53 maintains a policy on emergency, which was amended on April 30, 2008. There is also a "smoke-free" policy that was amended on September 26, 2007.
Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District is a grades K-12 school district based in Dobbs Ferry, New York in the Hudson Valley, approximately 20 miles north of midtown Manhattan. The district is small compared to most districts in Westchester County, New York, with approximately 112 students per grade in three schools: Springhurst Elementary School; Dobbs Ferry Middle School; and, Dobbs Ferry High School.
The combination of small size and emphasis on educational excellence results in a district that offers a "private school experience in a public school setting".
The governing body of the school district is the elected board of education, which contains seven members each serving 3-year terms. The board members elect a president and vice-president for 1-year terms. The president for the 2014-2015 school year is Tracy Baron, and the vice-president is Robert Reiser. The board of education hires the superintendent of the school district. The current superintendent is Lisa Brady.
