Donald Winnicott - True and False Self
Download Donald Winnicott True and False Self - FREE PDF handout HERE - https://counsellingtutor.com/counselling-terminally-ill-clients/
True and false self is determined by how far a young child is allowed to be themselves by their caregiver e.g. if a child is told something along the lines of ‘boys don’t cry’, this will effect the way the young boy grows up, and his relationship with showing emotion through crying.
These children grow into adults, and adults present in the therapy room – allow them to show their true selves.
Clients may show this through being childish, aggressive, or by challenging you – this is the client showing parts of themselves they couldn’t express as a child.
The counsellor will need to be strong and robust to manage this - undergo your own therapy.

The True and the False Self
A good life is one in which we can dare to show our True Self and do not mind too much occasionally having to wear the mask of a False Self. But for this to be possible, we need a certain sort of childhood - as the masterful British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott helped to explain in his theory of the true and the false self, outlined here.

“One of the most surprising but powerful explanations for why we may, as adults, be in trouble mentally is that we were, in our earliest years, denied the opportunity to be fully ourselves, that is, we were not allowed to be wilful and difficult, we could not be as demanding, aggressive, intolerant, and unrestrictedly selfish as we needed to be. Because our caregivers were preoccupied or fragile, we had to be preternaturally attuned to their demands, sensing that we had to comply in order to be loved and tolerated; we had to be false before we had the chance to feel properly alive. And as a result, many years later, without quite understanding the process, we risk feeling unanchored, inwardly dead and somehow not entirely present…”

The British psychotherapist, Donald Winnicott, has many key ideas that are useful when thinking about how we develop and connect with the wider world particularly in times of difficulty.
His genius, in part, is also to take and on develop ideas of Freud as well as make connections with ideas of Jung.
In this talk, Mark Vernon explores the way in which Winnicott charts the dynamics of our personal development and how that may unfold into a maturity that relates us more fully to the world around us and even to the spirit of life itself.
NB I realise now I mistakenly talked of "stages of ruth" rather than "stages of pre-ruth"! But the main point about the stance the child has towards life is still right.
