Opposition Democrat Party members join group of anti-government protesters
(29 Nov 2013) Members of the Thai opposition Democrat Party joined crowds of protesters in Bangkok on Friday, calling for an end to the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former Finance minister Korn Chatikavanij were cheered as they spoke before two thousand protesters who gathered in Asoke district before marching to the nearby US embassy.
"The prime objective is for the people to once again show their power, that they will not abide by a government that does not respect the rule of law," said Korn.
More than one thousand anti-government protesters also marched to the Pheu Thai party headquarters, where Yingluck's ruling party is based, and were met by a riot police barricade securing the building.

Security forces have done little to stop protesters who have spent the week seizing government buildings and camping out at several of them in an effort to force a government shutdown and get civil servants to join their rally.
The demonstrations that started on Sunday have raised fears of fresh political turmoil and instability in Thailand and pose the biggest threat to Yingluck's administration since she came to power in 2011.
Yingluck has been reluctant to use force to evict the opposition-led protesters for fear of escalating a tense political crisis and sparking bloodshed.
The protesters accuse Yingluck of serving as a proxy for her billionaire brother Thaksin Shinawatra - a former prime minister who was ousted in a 2006 military coup but retains strong support from the rural majority in Thailand.
Thaksin, who lives in Dubai to avoid serving a jail term for a corruption conviction he says was politically motivated, is a highly polarising figure in Thailand.
So much so, that an ill-advised bid to push a general amnesty law through parliament - which would have paved the way for his return - sparked the latest wave of protests earlier this month.

STORYLINE:
A Thai court on Wednesday cleared the country's oldest political party of charges of election law violations, a verdict that could help restore political stability ahead of December elections.
Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva appeared relieved as he worked his way through the crowd after the announcement.
While clearing the Democrat Party of charges, the Constitutional Tribunal had still to issue it verdict on charges against the Thai Rak Thai Party of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
The court took more than four hours to complete reading the charges and verdicts against the Democrats, and was expected to issue its verdicts against Thai Rak Thai on Wednesday night.
The court ruled the Democrat Party had neither unfairly maligned Thaksin nor urged voters breached election law in urging voters to cast a "no" vote in last year's election.
The verdict was watched on televisions in most homes and shops throughout the capital.
