The Cold War: The Hungarian Revolution 1956 - Episode 25
After Khrushchev's Secret Speech in 1956 and the Polish Revolution, Hungary started to demand more freedom themselves. Although this succeeded at the start, when Imre Nagy said that Hungary would withdraw from the Warsaw Pact, this was not acceptable for Khrushchev and the Soviet Union.

How Hungary Rose Up Against Communism In 1956
On October 23, 1956, Hungary rose up against communist rule. It was the first armed revolution against an Eastern Bloc regime. The uprising was crushed and the return to democracy that had been fought war was delayed until its anniversary 30 years ago, when the Hungarian Republic was declared in 1989.

Recommended books:
Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945 by Tony Judt. Best book on the period available. Absolutely phenomenal and a complete tome (worth every penny, though).
A Concise History of Hungary by Miklós Molnár. Like all of the other books in this series its a fantastic introduction to all Hungarian history. Not the cheapest but still a great book for people interested in both Communist and all other Hungarian history.
