Daniel Pearl (October 10, 1963 – February 1, 2002) was a journalist with American and Israeli citizenship. He was kidnapped by Pakistani militants and later murdered in Pakistan.
Pearl was kidnapped while working as the South Asia Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal, based in Mumbai, India. He had gone to Pakistan as part of an investigation into the alleged links between Richard Reid (the "shoe bomber") and Al-Qaeda. He was subsequently killed by his captors.
After gaining a master's degree at University of Texas at Austin, Pearl met Tobe Hooper in a film lab. After receiving some advice from the cinematographer about filters, Hooper later invited him to work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, saying that "it's really important that I have a Texan shoot this film."
It is the smallest comprehensive high school in LAUSD. The high school offers a complete academic program with an emphasis on journalism and communications.
History
The school started as a part of Birmingham High School in 1995. In May 2007, the Magnet was renamed. Its current name honors Daniel Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter killed by terrorists who was an alumnus of Birmingham High School.
Prior to Pearl Magnet's separation from Birmingham, Birmingham became an independent charter school within LAUSD. About 66% of the faculty members of the school supported it. Because of the divisions within teachers and other staff members, the faculty and staff of the magnet program received permission from LAUSD to split from Birmingham.
In 2009, DPMHS was formed as an independent high school on the Birmingham campus. Connie Llanos of the Los Angeles Daily News said that Pearl "got off to a rocky start." During the first year as a standalone school, one third of the students left. Some left due to conflicts with Birmingham staff and students; some Birmingham students and staff members tormented Pearl students. Some left because Pearl was so small; they wanted a more comprehensive high school experience.
High School is a 1968 American documentary film directed by Frederick Wiseman that shows a typical day for a group of students at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was one of the first direct cinema (or cinéma vérité) documentaries. It was shot over five weeks in March and April 1968. The film was not shown in Philadelphia at the time of its release, due to Wiseman's concerns over what he called "vague talk" of a lawsuit.
The film was released in October 1968 by Wiseman's distribution company, Zipporah Films. High School has been aired on PBS Television. Wiseman distributes his work (DVDs and 16mm prints) through Zipporah Films, which rents them to high schools, colleges, and libraries on a five-year long-term lease. High School was selected in 1991 for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Wiseman made a second documentary on high school, High School II, based on Central Park East Secondary School in New York City, released in 1994.
High School is filmed at Holyrood Secondary, a Catholic school and one of the largest comprehensive High Schools in Europe with over 2000 pupils. The series seeks to capture the school's ethos rather than the day-to-day minutiae, resulting in little in-class footage but highlighting crucial parts of the school year. The film is narrated by actor Alec Newman, who ironically plays the headmaster in Waterloo Road.
Admission to Brooklyn Tech is based exclusively on an entrance examination, known as the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), open to all eighth and ninth grade New York City students. The test covers math (word problems and computation) and verbal (reading comprehension, logical reasoning, unscrambling paragraphs) skills. Out of the approximately 30,000 students taking the entrance examination for the September 2011 admission round, (with 23,085 students listing Brooklyn Tech as a choice on their application), about 1,951 offers were made (the most out of any of the specialized high schools, partly due to its size), making for an acceptance rate of 8.5%.

The Murder of Daniel Pearl - The Journalist and the Jihadi

Daniel Pearl spent his formative years in Los Angeles. He grew up in a Jewish family with two sisters and high-achieving academic parents. His father is a computer science professor and his mother is a software engineer.
Ruth Pearl, Daniel Pearl's Mother speaks about Daniel Pearl. She says, "Danel was interested in everything and this was from childhood, he was interested in music, cooking and soccer."
Michelle Pearl, Daniel Pearl's Sister speaks about Daniel Pearl. She says, "He plays Soccer and he plays violin. He always involved in music in any way he could be".
Eventually, he decides to become a Journalist, he started a newspaper at Stanford which is still in existence.
At Stanford University Daniel developed an interest in International issues and began to travel and explore Human Rights.
Daniel came to the paper in 1990 from The Berkshire Eagle, a good small paper and he was a hit from the beginning. Journalist Asra Numani works with him at The Journal.
He was definitely unorthodox, He was the first journal reporter with a ponytail and he always wears the craziest ties. I was a Muslim daughter of India he was Jewish son but we never divide in line in between us."
In London, Omar Sheikh another man was also being brought up in a middle-class suburb. He was ten years younger than Daniel, a Muslim of Pakistani origin but born and brought up in Britain. His father owned a garment business. Omar studied at an elite English private school.

Daniel Pearl (October 10, 1963 – February 1, 2002) was an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal. He was kidnapped and later beheaded by terrorists in Pakistan.
Pearl was working as the South Asia Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal, based in Mumbai, India. He was kidnapped when he went to Pakistan as part of an investigation into the alleged links between British citizen Richard Reid (known as the "shoe bomber") and al-Qaeda. Pearl was killed by his captors
Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British national of Pakistani origin, was sentenced to death by hanging for Pearl's abduction and murder in 2002 but his conviction was overturned by a Pakistani court in the summer of 2020.
In March 2007, at a closed military hearing in Guantánamo Bay, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a member of al-Qaeda, claimed that he had personally beheaded Pearl. Researchers have also connected Al-Qaeda member Saif al-Adel with the kidnapping.
Who killed the American journalist, Daniel Pearl in Pakistan? Renowned journalist, Mazhar Abbas, who has extensively followed up on this case, shares insights into this unresolved matter.

"I had a dream the night that Daniel was kidnapped and the dream was that he was in some kind of a troubled situation. He was very scared, he felt like he is gonna die."
The September 2011 attack on the World Trade Centre was an act of war and terror. One of the world's most distinguished newspaper The World Street Journal is based just across the street. In its aftermath, every media outlet mobilized its reporters to find out who is behind it. Daniel Pearl of The World Street Journal was already based in Asia. Hours after the Twin Tower attack he began tracking the story untill he became part of it.
This is the story of a passionate journalist and a shrewd terrorist. A reporter who happened to be Jewish and the Islamic Jihadi who set him up for slaughter.

On January 23, 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was abducted while working on a story in Karachi, Pakistan.
I was also on assignment in Pakistan at that time with Inside Edition and shifted my focus to report on the senseless kidnapping.
As a point of context for the video, on January 30th, 2002, Pearl’s captors threatened all American journalists in Pakistan and said we risked being killed if we didn’t leave.
We told our story through the eyes of veteran CBS News war correspondent Barry Peterson who was reporting from Islamabad, Pakistan.
On February 21st, the FBI and US State Department confirmed Daniel Pearl was killed by his captors. Paul Steiger, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal called his murder, “an act of barbarism that makes a mockery of everything Danny’s kidnappers claimed to believe in.”
Two extremely talented videographers joined me for this assignment in Pakistan... John Weitzman and Danny Higgins.
This story aired on Inside Edition: January 31, 2002.

Bubble gum and house parties When you stole your parents rum And tried to screw everything that could breathe Back in high school we didn't have a whole lot to do We watched the world go by on the television screen Said it's the 90's kids that's way out this is way in Go beat each other up on the dance floor Told us drugs were no good But then we smoked 'em and liked 'em So much that we smoked a little more We liked 'em so much, we smoked a little more Did I call your name? Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you? You're so the same but your so different I didn't recognize you It's kinda hard with all that sexual confusion Sometimes you don't know if you're gay or straight But what's the difference, it's a wonderful illusion Most times you won't make it past second base I'm in a band, we kinda suck but we don't now it yet And I don't care anyway 'Cuz soon, I'm gonna sell these drums, pay my rent Support my kid and tell him all about way back in daddy's day I'll tell him all about way back in daddy's day Did I call your name? Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you? You're so the same but your so different I didn't recognize you Some years later by a soda coolerator In a corner store back in my home town This stranger smiles at me, said "Remember the class of '93?" And for some reason it makes him look real proud After all the good times he said we had He looks at me, scratches his head And asked me where the hell I ever went And the funny thing is that I never even knew him But he coulda been any one of my high school friends Did I call your name? Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you? Your so the same but your so different I didn't recognize you Did I call you name? Singin' that song that I wrote for you Singin' that song I wrote for you
