Daniel Pearl (October 10, 1963 – February 1, 2002) was a journalist with American and Israeli citizenship. He was kidnapped by Pakistani militants and later murdered in Pakistan.
Pearl was kidnapped while working as the South Asia Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal, based in Mumbai, India. He had gone to Pakistan as part of an investigation into the alleged links between Richard Reid (the "shoe bomber") and Al-Qaeda. He was subsequently killed by his captors.
After gaining a master's degree at University of Texas at Austin, Pearl met Tobe Hooper in a film lab. After receiving some advice from the cinematographer about filters, Hooper later invited him to work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, saying that "it's really important that I have a Texan shoot this film."
Daniel is a masculinegiven name and a surname of Hebrew origin. It means, "God is my judge", and derives from two early biblical figures, primary among them Daniel from the Book of Daniel. It is a common given name for males, and is also used as a surname. It is also the basis for various derived given names and surnames.
Background
The name evolved into over 100 different spellings in countries around the world. Nicknames (Dan, Danny) are common in both English and Hebrew, although in some instances "Dan" may be a complete given name rather than a nickname. The name "Daniil" (Даниил) is common in Russia. Feminine versions (Danielle, Daniela, Daniella, Dani, Danitza) are prevalent as well. The Dutch names "Daan" and "Daniël" are also variations of Daniel. A related surname developed as a patronymic, Daniels. Other surnames derived from "Daniel" include McDaniel and Danielson.
In the United States, the U.S. Social Security Administration reports that Daniel has peaked as the fifth most popular name for newborns in 1985, 1990, 2007, and 2008. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that in the 2000 census, "Daniels" was the 182nd most common surname in the U.S., while "McDaniel" was ranked at 323, and "Daniel" (without a final "s") was ranked at 380.
"Daniel" is a song by English recording artist Bat for Lashes, from her second studio album, Two Suns. It is her best selling single to date, selling over 46,000 copies worldwide. The song was announced as the lead single from Two Suns in January 2009, then released as a digital download single on 1 March 2009, and as a 7" vinyl single on 6 April 2009. The track was written by Natasha Khan and produced by David Kosten, as with all tracks on the album. Ira Wolf Tuton from Yeasayer provided the bass lines for the song and Khan did the rest of the instrumentation herself. Khan said in an interview with The Sun newspaper that "Daniel" is based on a fictional character that she fell in love with as a teenager.
The single's cover features Khan with an image of the character Daniel LaRusso, from the film The Karate Kid, painted on her back. A character much like LaRusso also features at the end of the music video which goes with the song. The B-side of the 7" is a cover version of a 1980 single by The Cure.
Traditionally ascribed to Daniel himself, modern scholarly consensus considers the book pseudonymous, the stories of the first half legendary in origin, and the visions of the second the product of anonymous authors in the Maccabean period (2nd century BC). Its message is that just as the God of Israel saved Daniel and his friends from their enemies, so he would save all of Israel in their present oppression.
Its influence has resonated through later ages, from the Dead Sea Scrolls community and the authors of the gospels and Revelation, to various movements from the 2nd century to the Protestant Reformation and modern millennialist movements - on whom it continues to have a profound influence.

The Murder of Daniel Pearl - The Journalist and the Jihadi

This is the story of a passionate journalist and a shrewd terrorist. A reporter who happened to be Jewish and the Islamic Jihadi who set him up for slaughter.
Daniel Pearl spent his formative years in Los Angeles. He grew up in a Jewish family with two sisters and high-achieving academic parents. His father is a computer science professor and his mother is a software engineer.
Ruth Pearl, Daniel Pearl's Mother speaks about Daniel Pearl. She says, "Danel was interested in everything and this was from childhood, he was interested in music, cooking and soccer."
Michelle Pearl, Daniel Pearl's Sister speaks about Daniel Pearl. She says, "He plays Soccer and he plays violin. He always involved in music in any way he could be".
Eventually, he decides to become a Journalist, he started a newspaper at Stanford which is still in existence.
At Stanford University Daniel developed an interest in International issues and began to travel and explore Human Rights.
Daniel came to the paper in 1990 from The Berkshire Eagle, a good small paper and he was a hit from the beginning. Journalist Asra Numani works with him at The Journal.
He was definitely unorthodox, He was the first journal reporter with a ponytail and he always wears the craziest ties. I was a Muslim daughter of India he was Jewish son but we never divide in line in between us."
In London, Omar Sheikh another man was also being brought up in a middle-class suburb. He was ten years younger than Daniel, a Muslim of Pakistani origin but born and brought up in Britain. His father owned a garment business. Omar studied at an elite English private school.

Daniel Pearl (October 10, 1963 – February 1, 2002) was an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal. He was kidnapped and later beheaded by terrorists in Pakistan.
Pearl was working as the South Asia Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal, based in Mumbai, India. He was kidnapped when he went to Pakistan as part of an investigation into the alleged links between British citizen Richard Reid (known as the "shoe bomber") and al-Qaeda. Pearl was killed by his captors
Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British national of Pakistani origin, was sentenced to death by hanging for Pearl's abduction and murder in 2002 but his conviction was overturned by a Pakistani court in the summer of 2020.
In March 2007, at a closed military hearing in Guantánamo Bay, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a member of al-Qaeda, claimed that he had personally beheaded Pearl. Researchers have also connected Al-Qaeda member Saif al-Adel with the kidnapping.
Who killed the American journalist, Daniel Pearl in Pakistan? Renowned journalist, Mazhar Abbas, who has extensively followed up on this case, shares insights into this unresolved matter.

"I had a dream the night that Daniel was kidnapped and the dream was that he was in some kind of a troubled situation. He was very scared, he felt like he is gonna die."
The September 2011 attack on the World Trade Centre was an act of war and terror. One of the world's most distinguished newspaper The World Street Journal is based just across the street. In its aftermath, every media outlet mobilized its reporters to find out who is behind it. Daniel Pearl of The World Street Journal was already based in Asia. Hours after the Twin Tower attack he began tracking the story untill he became part of it.

On January 23, 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was abducted while working on a story in Karachi, Pakistan.
I was also on assignment in Pakistan at that time with Inside Edition and shifted my focus to report on the senseless kidnapping.
As a point of context for the video, on January 30th, 2002, Pearl’s captors threatened all American journalists in Pakistan and said we risked being killed if we didn’t leave.
We told our story through the eyes of veteran CBS News war correspondent Barry Peterson who was reporting from Islamabad, Pakistan.
On February 21st, the FBI and US State Department confirmed Daniel Pearl was killed by his captors. Paul Steiger, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal called his murder, “an act of barbarism that makes a mockery of everything Danny’s kidnappers claimed to believe in.”
Two extremely talented videographers joined me for this assignment in Pakistan... John Weitzman and Danny Higgins.
This story aired on Inside Edition: January 31, 2002.
