Dan Flavin
Dan Flavin (April 1, 1933, Jamaica, New York – November 29, 1996, Riverhead, New York) was an American minimalist artist famous for creating sculptural objects and installations from commercially available fluorescent light fixtures.
Early life and career
Daniel Nicholas Flavin Jr. was born in New York of Irish Catholic descent and sent to Catholic schools. He studied for the priesthood at the Immaculate Conception Preparatory Seminary in Brooklyn between 1947 and 1952 before leaving to join his fraternal twin brother, David John Flavin, and enlist United States Air Force. During military service in 1954–55, Flavin was trained as an air weather meteorological technician and studied art through the adult extension program of the University of Maryland in Korea. Upon his return to New York in 1956, Flavin briefly attended the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts and studied art under Albert Urban. He later studied art history for a short time at the New School for Social Research, then moved on to Columbia University, where he studied painting and drawing.

Dan Flavin (Louisiana politician)
Daniel Thomas Flavin, known as Dan Flavin (born May 31, 1957), is a Realtor in Lake Charles, Louisiana, who served from 1996-2005 as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from District 36 (Calcasieu and Cameron parishes). Flavin was elected as a Democrat in the nonpartisan blanket primary held in October 1995. He defeated fellow Democrat Darrell Derouen, also of Lake Charles, 63-37 percent. In 1997, Flavin switched his partisan affiliation to Republican and won new terms in 1999 and 2003. He resigned in the first part of his third term in 2005.
Flavin graduated in 1975 from Alfred M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles and thereafter attended McNeese State University. He is a past chairman of the Louisiana Real Estate Commission. Formerly with Century 21 in Lake Charles, he was the "Realtor of the Year” in Calcasieu Parish in 1987 and 1991, having been a past president of Greater Calcasieu Board of Realtors. He is also affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Flavin and his wife, the former Lisa Joyce Jones (born May 18, 1957), reside in Lake Charles.

Kunstmuseum Basel
The Kunstmuseum Basel houses the largest and most significant public art collection in Switzerland, and is listed as a heritage site of national significance. Its lineage extends back to the Amerbach Cabinet, a collection of works by Hans Holbein purchased by the city of Basel in 1661, which made it the first municipally owned museum. Its collection is distinguished by an impressively wide historic span, from the early 15th century up to the immediate present. Its various areas of emphasis give it international standing as one of the most significant museums of its kind. These encompass: paintings and drawings by artists active in the Upper Rhine region between 1400 and 1600, and on the art of the 19th to 21st centuries.
Collection
The Kunstmuseum possesses the largest collection of works by the Holbein family. Further examples of Renaissance art include important pieces by such masters as Konrad Witz, Hans Baldung (called Grien), Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Mathias Grünewald. The main features of the 17th and 18th centuries are the Flemish and Dutch schools (e.g. Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Jan Brueghel the Elder), German and Dutch still life painting. Key works from the 19th century include the Impressionists represented by Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne as well as the paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Switzerland’s Arnold Böcklin and Ferdinand Hodler. In the 20th century, the focus is on works of Cubism with Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris. Expressionism is represented by such figures as Edvard Munch, Franz Marc, Oskar Kokoschka and Emil Nolde. The collection also includes works from Constructivism, Dadaism and Surrealism and American art since 1950. Further highlights are the unique compilations of works from Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Paul Klee, Alberto Giacometti and Marc Chagall.

Opening to the public over 350 years ago, the Kunstmuseum Basel is a living symbol of Baslers’ love of art. Its program unfolds over three striking venues – the Hauptbau, Neubau, and Gegenwart – that are located by the Rhine and operate like ‘three parts of a single organism’s body’, says director Josef Helfenstein. The Kunstmuseum Basel’s collections range from Pre-Renaissance painting to installations by Modern and contemporary artists. Yet far from relying on such riches, the museum constantly strives to offer visitors new perspectives on its holdings.

Unveiling a hidden facet of Dan Flavin’s (1933-1996) artistic legacy, the Kunstmuseum Basel presents “Dedications in Lights” at Neubau, or the New Building. Curated by Josef Helfenstein and Olga Osadtschy, the exhibition opens from March 2 to August 18, 2024. This American artist’s ingenious use of fluorescent tubes redefined light as art, cementing his place in art history from the 1960s. The video may not fully capture the true vibrancy of the artworks, particularly the yellow and blue hues, due to the technical challenges of filming fluorescent light. The museum's website offers an alternative video for a more accurate representation. As always, there is no substitute for seeing art firsthand with your own eyes to truly feel its impact.

Dan Flavin was an American artist born in New York in 1933. He is best known
for his pioneering work with fluorescent light, which he used to create
minimalist sculptures that explored the relationships between light, space, and
color.
Flavin began his artistic career in the 1950s as a painter, but he soon became
interested in using light as a medium. He began experimenting with
fluorescent tubes, which he saw as an industrial product that could be
repurposed for artistic ends.
In 1961, Flavin created his first light installation, which consisted of a single
fluorescent tube mounted on a wall. The tube emitted a soft, cool light that
filled the space around it, creating a subtle but powerful visual effect. Over the
next few years, Flavin continued to refine his use of fluorescent light, creating
increasingly complex installations that played with the qualities of light and
space.
Flavin's work was closely associated with the Minimalist movement, which

Dan Flavin (April 1, 1933, Jamaica, New York – November 29, 1996, Riverhead, New York) was an American minimalist artist famous for creating sculptural objects and installations from commercially available fluorescent light fixtures.
Early life and career
Daniel Nicholas Flavin Jr. was born in New York of Irish Catholic descent and sent to Catholic schools. He studied for the priesthood at the Immaculate Conception Preparatory Seminary in Brooklyn between 1947 and 1952 before leaving to join his fraternal twin brother, David John Flavin, and enlist United States Air Force. During military service in 1954–55, Flavin was trained as an air weather meteorological technician and studied art through the adult extension program of the University of Maryland in Korea. Upon his return to New York in 1956, Flavin briefly attended the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts and studied art under Albert Urban. He later studied art history for a short time at the New School for Social Research, then moved on to Columbia University, where he studied painting and drawing.

Das Kunstmuseum Basel mit seiner weltberühmten Sammlung steht vor einem Quantensprung. Mitte April 2016 eröffnet das erweiterte Kunsmuseum Basel mit dem Neubau der Architekten Christ & Gantenbein. Mit dem Hauptbau und dem Museum für Gegenwartskunst besteht das Kunstmuseum Basel dann aus drei Häusern. Der Film reflektiert die Bestimmung, Entstehung und Architektur des Neubaus. Zu Wort kommen Direktor Bernhard Mendes Bürgi und Stefan Charles, Kaufmännischer Direktor des Kunstmuseums Basel sowie der Architekt Emanuel Christ von Christ & Gantenbein.

Unveiling a hidden facet of Dan Flavin’s (1933-1996) artistic legacy, the Kunstmuseum Basel presents “Dedications in Lights” at Neubau, or the New Building. Curated by Josef Helfenstein and Olga Osadtschy, the exhibition opens from March 2 to August 18, 2024. This American artist’s ingenious use of fluorescent tubes redefined light as art, cementing his place in art history from the 1960s.

American artist Dan Flavin (1933–1996) was a pioneer of Minimal Art. He rose to fame in the 1960s with his work with industrially manufactured fluorescent tubes, inventing a new art form and securing his place in art history. The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel focuses on his works that are dedicated to other artists or make reference to certain events.
The exhibition at Kunstmuseum Basel, by contrast, places emphasis on looking at Flavin’s oeuvre in a less familiar setting: His pieces, although initially without clearly recognisable signature, frequently make reference in their titles to concrete events, such as wartime atrocities or police violence, or are dedicated to other artists.

Kambui Olujimi is a multimedia artist based in New York. He works across disciplines - often with painting and film - making sociopolitical commentary, exploring memory and race, and flirting with Afrofuturism.
In what ways have artists from the African continent and its far-flung diaspora processed the experience of the quotidian in their painting over the last 100 years? Koyo Kouoh, Director and Chief Curator of the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, South Africa, and her team undertook extensive research to find out. The result is a comprehensive show that brings together works by 120 artists: a kaleidoscope of Black figurative painting over the last 100 years. Also scheduled to be on show at the Kunstmuseum Basel, Zeitz MOCAA has created a groundbreaking exhibition that demands to be seen.
