In 1771 parts of Cumberland County, Johnston County, and Orange County were combined to form Wake County. In July 1784 the western part of Cumberland County became Moore County; the eastern part became Fayette County in honor of the Marquis de la Fayette, but the name Cumberland County was restored three months later. In 1855 the northern part of Cumberland County became Harnett County. Finally, in 1911 parts of Cumberland County and Robeson County were combined to form Hoke County.
The first record of the term "Cumberland" appears in 945, when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded that the area was ceded to Malcolm I of Scotland by King Edmund of England. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 most of the future county remained part of Scotland although some villages in the ancient district of Millom, which were the possessions of the Earl of Northumbria, were included in the Yorkshire section with the Furness region.
In 1092 King William Rufus of England invaded the Carlisle district, settling it with colonists. He created an Earldom of Carlisle, and granted the territory to Ranulf Meschyn. In 1133 Carlisle was made the see of a new diocese, identical with the area of the earldom. However, on the death of King Henry I in 1135, the area was regained by Scotland's King David I. He was able to consolidate his power and made Carlisle one of his chief seats of government, while England descended into a lengthy civil war. In 1157 Henry II of England resumed possession of the area from Malcolm IV of Scotland, and formed two new counties from the former earldom: Westmorland and "Carliol". The silver-mining area of Alston, previously associated with the Liberty of Durham, was also added to the new county of Carliol for financial reasons. By 1177 the county of Carliol was known as Cumberland. The border between England and Scotland was made permanent by the Treaty of York in 1237.
Cumberland is a provincialelectoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. It is the largest electoral district in the province, and at the 2007 general election was the safest for the New Democratic Party. It has elected a member of the NDP (and its predecessor the CCF) since 1952.
The Cumberland station was first proposed in 1972 as part of an extension of the Blue Line from Logan Square to O'Hare International Airport. The station opened on February 27, 1983, along with Harlem and Rosemont. The three new stations brought 6,000 new riders to the northwest CTA line in the following month, and Cumberland became especially attractive to suburban commuters. The station at Cumberland consists of a single island platform; a pedestrian overpass connects the platform to a station building to the south and an exit stairway to the north. The station also includes a bus terminal and a park and ride lot. Trains serve Cumberland 24 hours a day every day; the headway between trains is 10 minutes during peak periods, with less frequent service at other times. In addition to trains, Cumberland also serves CTA buses, Pace buses, Burlington Trailways buses, and Greyhound buses.
Although today the state's largest population center is around Chicago in the northern part of the state, the state's European population grew first in the west, with French Canadians who settled along the Mississippi River, and gave the area the name, Illinois. After the American Revolutionary War established the United States, American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s via the Ohio River, and the population grew from south to north. In 1818, Illinois achieved statehood. After construction of the Erie Canal increased traffic and trade through the Great Lakes, Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, at one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan.John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow turned Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. Railroads carried immigrants to new homes, as well as being used to ship their commodity crops out to markets.
Illinois is the second studio album by American country music artist Brett Eldredge. It was released on September 11, 2015 via Atlantic Records Nashville. Its lead single, "Lose My Mind", was released to country radio on May 4, 2015. Eldredge co-wrote every song, and produced the album with Ross Copperman and Brad Crisler.
Critical reception
Giving it 4 out of 5 stars, Stephen Thomas Erlewine praised the album's R&B influences, saying that "Such soulfulness and sly stylistic diversity were largely absent on Bring You Back, a quite pleasing set of by-the-books radio country, and it certainly enlivens Illinois, but not at the expense of strong songs."
Commercial performance
Illinois entered the US Billboard 200 chart at number 3, selling 51,000 equivalent units in the week ending September 17 (including 44,000 traditional album sales). This marks the largest-selling week for an album in Eldredge's career, passing Bring You Back (2013), which sold 21,000 units in the first week on chart. In the second week it sold an additional 9,500 copies. As of January 2016, the album has sold 107,400 copies domestically.

How Traditional Cumberland Sausages Are Made In England | Regional Eats
You will spot it in a crowd thanks to its circular shape. But the reason why you will forever remember this sausage is the taste. With a coarser, juicier texture than other sausages and a flavorful aroma from the generous amount of spices, Cumberland sausages are a favorite in the UK. But the same distinctive features that have led Cumberland sausages to become one of the nation’s favorites have also endangered them, opening the way for more commercial imitations. We traveled to Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and met with Peter Gott, a farmer and butcher who in the last 20 years has made it his mission to defend the traditional method of making Cumberland sausages.

Cumberland Cross
By Carl Strommen
Item: 00-12974
Series: Alfred Concert Band
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 4
You'll really get a nice sound with this one! Carl's original work explores the rich American folk style in two sections. The first has broad, moving harmonies under a Shenandoah-like melody, and the second a lively dance reminiscent of Copland. "Cumberland Cross" is not too difficult, yet very impressive!

ABOUT THIS FEED:
This camera overlooks the historic Cumberland Station, home of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The station was built in 1913 as a stop for the Western Maryland Railway, and sits at MP 165.74.
WMSR is a scenic railway operating tourist trains along with occasional freight service. Specialty trains include steam and diesel-powered excursions like The Polar Express Train Ride, Murder Mystery Dinner Trains, Ice Cream Trains, Spring Fling, Pumpkin Patch, Evening Dinner Trains, Private Charters, and more. More than 20 trains a week travel from Cumberland to Frostburg, MD through the Allegany mountains, reaching a height of 1,291 vertical feet.
WMSR's prized locomotive no. 1309 recently finished restoration and went into operation in December 2021. No. 1309 is a Baldwin 2-6-6-2 steam locomotive delivered to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in 1949. It marks the first time an articulated locomotive has operated in the eastern US since Norfolk & Western's 1218 was retired in 1991.
A new partnership between WMSR and the Railroaders Memorial Museum (RMM) in Altoona, PA is raising funds for the restoration of the famed steam locomotive no. 1361, the "Spirit of Altoona."

Three people died in a house fire on Monday in Cumberland County. According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said deputies received the call around 2:21 p.m. after receiving a call from various departments. Sky 5 flew over the home at 3:30 p.m. on Unicorn Drive in the Hope Mills area,
The sheriff's office confirmed all three victims were adults. At least 10 firefighters were on site extinguishing hot spots and working among the debris. A large part of the roof was gone, and the home appeared badly damaged. Yellow tape surrounded a large portion of the home and land. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but the sheriff's office said arson investigators were at the scene. Deputies said the sheriff's office and fire department are investigating the fire.

Full story: https://www.wral.com/cumberland-county-deputy-hit-killed-by-suspected-drunk-driver-while-investigating-robbery/20631412/
The deputy was investigating a robbery around 2:45 a.m. that happened at the Circle K at 2990 Gillespie St. He was with the K-9 unit to track the robbery suspect, when a drunk driver hit him.
The drunk driver made it to the Waffle House, about a mile and a half away, where the driver was caught and taken into custody.
Deputies on the scene immediately attempted lifesaving efforts. The deputy was transported by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he died.
The Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis W. Wright changed his Facebook profile picture to honor the fallen deputy. The Spring Lake Police Department and Fayetteville City Councilman D.J. Haire, as well as many others, have offered their condolences.
