1000 Connecticut Avenue is a high-rise building located in the United States capital of Washington, D.C.. This building replaced a previous one, built in 1956, that was demolished in the winter of 2007.
Architect
The architect of the current building was James Ingo Freed, who teamed with New York firm of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners to design the postmodern structure of the building. This was one of several projects, including the United States Air Force Memorial that were underway when the architect died in 2005. The previous building was valued at approximately $ 25 million. The previous building served as the headquarters for real estate agency, Manta. The previous building rose to 153 feet (47m); due to the Heights of Buildings Act of 1910, the building's height was restricted to being lower than the width of the right-of-way of the avenue on which the building fronts. The new 1000 Connecticut Avenue was completed in 2012. A law firm, Arent Fox, leases eight floors of the building.
John Andrews won the 1980 International Union of Architects international competition to design the complex. The competition had taken place in 1979 with nearly 100 firms from 23 countries competing for the contract to design the complex. Ground was broken on the project on July 20, 1982 in a rather unusual manner. Using a network of four satellites and five earth stations, a signal was radioed around the world two times before it triggered a pre-set explosion at the building site. The complex was built in two phases, with Phase I being completed first in 1984 and Phase II following in 1988. While Andrews' contribution was positively cited as that of a creative professional, the project was marred by the embezzlement of five million dollars by Intelsat's director general and deputy.
Connecticut Avenue begins just north of the White House at Lafayette Square. It is interrupted by Farragut Square. North of Farragut Square and K Street, Connecticut Avenue is one of the major streets in downtown Washington, with high-end restaurants, historical buildings such as Sedgwick Gardens, hotels, and shopping.
As Connecticut Avenue approaches the Dupont Circle neighborhood, it splits at N Street into a through roadway and service roadways. The through roadway tunnels under Dupont Circle, while the service roadways intersect the outer roadway of the circle. Just north of the circle, the service roadways are known for their many gay-oriented businesses, of which the most famous is Lambda Rising. The through roadway and service roadways rejoin at R Street. Originally, there was no tunnel, and all vehicular traffic on Connecticut Avenue went through the circle. The tunnel was built in 1949.

Discharging at 19,600 cubic feet (560m3) per second, the Connecticut produces 70% of Long Island Sound's freshwater.
The Connecticut River Valley is home to some of the northeastern United States' most productive farmland, as well as a metropolitan region of approximately 2 million people surrounding Springfield, Massachusetts, and the state of Connecticut's capital, Hartford.
Etymology
The word "Connecticut" is a French corruption of the Mohegan word quinetucket, which means "beside the long, tidal river". The word "Connecticut" came into existence during the early 1600s, describing the river, which was also called simply "The Great River".
