An Introduction to Cohesion in Academic Writing
In this video for the NUST MISiS Academic Writing Center, English Language Fellow John Kotnarowski provides a brief introduction to the concept of cohesion in academic writing. Defining cohesion as “the grammatical and lexical links within a text”, the video outlines the importance of cohesion in academic writing and offers examples of several useful cohesive devices.

Cohesion vs Adhesion
Cohesion vs Adhesion with differences and explanation will clear the concepts of Adhesion and Cohesion.
Cohesion is the attraction of molecules to one another, while adhesion is the attraction of molecules to another type of molecule. For example, water molecules are attracted to each other, which is cohesion, but they are also attracted to a glass surface, which is adhesion.

Viscosity, Cohesive and Adhesive Forces, Surface Tension, and Capillary Action
Liquids have some very interesting properties, by virtue of the intermolecular forces they make, both between molecules of the liquid and those between the liquid and some other material they are in contact with. Let's learn about viscosity, cohesive and adhesive forces, surface tension, and capillary action.

Transpiration and Cohesion-Tension Theory. Cohesion and adhesion in the transport of water in plants
This videos explains the factors affecting transpiration as well as explaining the cohesion-tension theory. This is in the mass transport in plants topic in A-level biology, mass transport of water in plants. Learn how the properties of water result in adhesion and cohesion on water molecules to create a continuous column of water moving up the xylem.
This is often a topic students find conceptually challenging, so hopefully, this video will help clarify and explain the key ideas.

Cohesion relates to how words and sentences 'stick together' and make sense. It is achieved through using five methods: (1) reference words (e.g. he, she, it, them); (2) repeated words/ideas; (3) transition signals (also called cohesive devices); (4) substitution (replacing one word with another); and (5) ellipsis (omitting words).
Coherence relates to the organisation and progression of ideas, which help a text make sense to the reader. You can improve coherence by improving organisation (e.g. by making an outline before writing) and thinking about how to ensure the text makes sense to the reader (e.g. consider audience or get a peer to read through).
Coherence and cohesion are assessed as part of the IELTS and TOEFL tests, and the video examines the publicly available criteria to help you understand what they mean and what is being examined. The video will therefore help you to both improve your academic writing, and perform better in the IELTS or TOEFL tests.
