James BradleyFRS (March 1693 – 13 July 1762) was an English astronomer and served as Astronomer Royal from 1742, succeeding Edmond Halley. He is best known for two fundamental discoveries in astronomy, the aberration of light (1725–1728), and the nutation of the Earth's axis (1728–1748). These discoveries were called "the most brilliant and useful of the century" by Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre, historian of astronomy, mathematical astronomer and director of the Paris Observatory, in his history of astronomy in the 18th century (1821), because "It is to these two discoveries by Bradley that we owe the exactness of modern astronomy. .... This double service assures to their discoverer the most distinguished place (after Hipparchus and Kepler) above the greatest astronomers of all ages and all countries."
Biography
Bradley was born at Sherborne, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, to William Bradley and Jane Pound in March 1693. After attending Westwood's Grammar School at Northleach, he entered Balliol College, Oxford, on 15 March 1711, and took degrees of B.A. and M.A. in 1714 and 1717 respectively. His early observations were made at the rectory of Wanstead in Essex, under the tutelage of the Rev. James Pound, his uncle and a skilled astronomer. Bradley was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 6 November 1718.
Bradley James (born 11 October 1983) is an English actor. He is best known for portraying Arthur Pendragon (previously Prince Arthur) in the television programme Merlin.
Debuting in 2008, his breakthrough role as Arthur Pendragon in Merlin came later that year. He has since appeared in Homeland and iZombie, and will star as the title character in the upcoming Damien. Film roles include Carl in Fast Girls in 2012 and a villain in the future Underworld: Next Generation.
Early and personal life
James was born in Exeter, Devon in England. He and his family then moved to Jacksonville, Florida in the United States when he was nine years old. During his time there, he attended Crown Point Elementary School and then Fletcher Middle School, before attending Madeley High School in Madeley, England.
James is a fan of football and participates annually in sporting charity events. When he was younger, he wanted to be either a footballer or an actor.
Career
James first appeared in an episode of Lewis in 2008 and also played the part of Ben in the BBC Three drama Dis/Connected.
Bradley is an English surname derived from a place name meaning "broad wood" or "broad clearing" in Old English.
Like many English surnames Bradley can also be used as a given name and as such has become popular.
It is also an Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic name O’Brolachán (also O’Brallaghan) from County Tyrone in Ireland. The family moved and spread to counties Londonderry, Donegal and Cork, and England.
Surname
Bradley is the surname of the following notable people:
A. C. Bradley (Andrew Cecil Bradley, 1851–1935), English Shakespearean scholar
Abraham Bradley, Jr. (1767–1838), first Assistant Postmaster-General of the U.S.
The Bradley was an automobile manufactured in Cicero, Illinois, USA, by the Bradley Motor Car Company. Production commenced in 1920 with the Model H tourer, which was powered by a 4 cylinderLycoming engine, had a 116-inch wheelbase, and a selling price of $1295.
In 1921 the Model H continued in production, but was joined by the 6 cylinder powered Model F, also available as a tourer for $1500.
In November 1920, the company went into involuntary receivership, with liabilities of approximately $100,000. Although the assets held by the company were greater, including finished and party-assembled vehicles, along with a large inventory, the company was bankrupt by the end of 1921. Total production of the Bradley automobile was 263 cars.
