Civil defense

Civil defense, civil defence (see spelling differences) or civil protection is an effort to protect the citizens of a state (generally non-combatants) from military attack. It uses the principles of emergency operations: prevention, mitigation, preparation, response, or emergency evacuation and recovery. Programs of this sort were initially discussed at least as early as the 1920s and were implemented in some countries during the 1930s as the threat of war and aerial bombardment grew. It became widespread after the threat of nuclear weapons was realized.

Since the end of the Cold War, the focus of civil defense has largely shifted from military attack to emergencies and disasters in general. The new concept is described by a number of terms, each of which has its own specific shade of meaning, such as crisis management, emergency management, emergency preparedness, contingency planning, emergency services, and civil protection.

In some countries, civil defense is seen as a key part of "total defense". For example, in Sweden, the Swedish word totalförsvar refers to the commitment of a wide range of resources of the nation to its defense - including to civil protection. Respectively, some countries (notably the Soviet Union) may have or have had military-organized civil defense units (Civil Defense Troops) as part of their armed forces or as a paramilitary service.

Armageddon is a Scottish beer introduced on 3 November 2012. Ingredients include crystal malt, wheat, flaked oats and Scottish spring water. It is labelled as the world's 2nd strongest beer as of October 2013, after Brewmeister's Snake Venom was released, with an ABV rating of 65%.

Armageddon (Prism album)

Armageddon is the third studio album and fourth album overall by Canadian rock band Prism. It was released in 1979 on Canadian record label GRT. It achieved double platinum status in Canada (in excess of 200,000 units sold).

Armageddon is notable for several reasons. Bruce Fairbairn received the Canadian music industry 1980 Juno Award for Producer of the Year for the album. Band leader and guitarist-songwriter Lindsay Mitchell received the SOCAN Song of the Year award for "Night to Remember". It is the band's best selling album. Despite all the commercial success, the band's record label, GRT Records, filed for bankruptcy in the same year of the album's release. The album is also notable for the songwriting contributions by Bryan Adams.

Background

Armageddon was crucial in Prism's commercial development. The band had already released two successful albums, both reaching platinum status in Canada (100,000+ units sold.) But they had yet to break into the US in a significant way and were only an opening act on the Canadian arena rock tour. Armageddon was expected to be their breakout album, elevating the band to international success and a concert headline act. The first and biggest obstacle the band faced was a lack of songwriting within the lineup. Jim Vallance, under the pseudonym "Rodney Higgs", was the original and principal songwriter for Prism. But after the first album, he withdrew from the band and only provided token contributions. The role of principal songwriter was then left to Lindsay Mitchell. Although a capable songwriter, he could not match the quantity of material written by Vallance. This in turn forced the band to go outside the lineup for new material.

Armageddon (2006)

Armageddon (2006) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and presented by Activision's Call of Duty 3, which took place on December 17, 2006, at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. The event starred wrestlers from the SmackDown! brand.

The main event was a tag team match, in which the team of Batista and John Cena defeated the team of King Booker and Finlay. Two featured bouts were scheduled on the undercard, including The Undertaker versus Mr. Kennedy, in a match where the objective was to place an opponent in a hearse located on the entrance stage and drive them out of the arena, which Undertaker won. The other match was an Inferno match featuring wrestlers attempting to set the opponent on fire with flames surrounding the ring. Kane defeated Montel Vontavious Porter.

The event grossed over $423,500 in ticket sales from an attendance of 8,200. Canadian Online Explorer's professional wrestling section rated the WWE Tag Team Championship match a nine out of ten stars, the highest match rating. The event was released on DVD on January 16, 2007 by Sony Music Entertainment. The DVD reached second on Billboard's DVD Sales Chart for recreational sports during the week of February 18, 2007, and it dropped to the tenth spot the following week.

KITS ("Live 105") is a San Francisco, California, USA-based radio station broadcasting at 105.3 MHz. The station is owned by CBS Radio and programs a modern rock format. The station also broadcasts on HD channel L2, locally on Comcast cable channel 986, and is streaming online. The station transmits its signal from San Bruno Mountains, while studios are located in the SoMa district of San Francisco.

History

Hot Hits

The station's original call letters were KBCO from its sign-on on December 28, 1959 to 1964. On June 1, 1964 the station changed their call letters to KBRG. The KITS call letters arrived in February 1983 when the station adopted radio consultant Mike Joseph's Hot Hits Top-40 music format. Seven air personalities were recruited during a nationwide search from stations such as XETRA Tijuana, Mexico, Q104 Kansas City, 92x Columbus, Ohio, and WCAU-FM Philadelphia. The transplanted jocks underwent a "broadcasting bootcamp" for two weeks prior to launching the new Hot Hits format. Radio personality Doug Ritter (Doug Ritterling) was the first Disc Jockey on the air (at 9am on February 27, 1983), transitioning KBRG-FM from its Spanish format to Hot Hits.

Opening: Clock on a large commercial building in an urban downtown shows 5:00 p.m. An elevator door opens and people exit. People leave the building as others enter. Titles (:08-:58). Exterior of a building, with Fallout Shelter signage visible. Two men talk in front of a van. Food and water is being carted into the building to stock the fallout shelter on the side of the building. People leave work and exit the building. A man gets into his Ford Falcon automobile. Drives off. Drives through a city (:59-2:28). Car drives onward. Exterior of multiple buildings. Exterior of an industrial plant. School, apartments, many of them have fallout shelters. The man in the car pulls up in front of a suburban home on a quiet street. Outside the house (2:29-4:39). A couple who is interested in having a home fallout shelter talks with Civil Defense Director Hank Adams. Adams shows the couple a model of an above ground shelter, he describes it and points with a pencil. He shows another metal shelter followed by a basement shelter. He points at a model for an underground concrete shelter (4:40-7:16). The couple sits at a table inside their house. The homeowner decides to build a shelter himself. He measures in his basement. Two younger boys move stuff around to help him. A premixed mortar is being made with water. The man measures from the wall to the middle. The man starts laying the mortar. He places a concrete block onto it in place. Measures to make sure it's straight. He lays mortar for the second block nearby. He places mortar on one end of the new block and lays it down connecting the two (7:17-10:40). He pounds the block down with his hand. He uses a carpenter's tool to make sure there is a true right angle. The man starts laying more mortar. He lays more blocks. The wall is rising as he does it. A right angle corner is built six courses high. The younger boys continue to assist in some capacity. Civil Defence Information Bulletin were a series of seven public information films dealing with civil defence measures individuals and families could take in the event of a nuclear attack on Great Britain. They were produced for the Home Office and the Scottish Home and Health Department by RHR Productions United Kingdom in 1964. The writer was Nicolas Alwyn and the producer Ronald H. Riley. In the event of an international crisis, these films were to be broadcast by all television networks in the U.K., in much the same manner as the Protect and Survive films were to be broadcast in the 1980s. It refers to Civil Defence Handbook No. 10, entitled Advising the Householder on Protection against Nuclear Attack. There was a total of 7 films. Each film was a few minutes long and would feature the ominous jingle with the civil defence logo. Then there was a blank title card on the subject matter and then a mix of live-action clips, animation and still images. Majority of the advice is similar to Protect and Survive such as the idea of building a core (referred to as an inner refuge in Protect and Survive) and the idea of white washing the windows to prevent fires. Food and water is being carted into the building to stock the fallout shelter on the side of the building. People leave work and exit the building. A man gets into his Ford Falcon automobile. Drives off. Drives through a city (:59-2:28). Car drives onward. Exterior of multiple buildings. Exterior of an industrial plant. School, apartments, many of them have fallout shelters. The man in the car pulls up in front of a suburban home on a quiet street. Outside the house (2:29-4:39). A couple who is interested in having a home fallout shelter talks with Civil Defense Director Hank Adams. Adams shows the couple a model of an above ground shelter, he describes it and points with a pencil. He shows another metal shelter followed by a basement shelter. He points at a model for an underground concrete shelter (4:40-7:16). The couple sits at a table inside their house. The homeowner decides to build a shelter himself. He measures in his basement. Two younger boys move stuff around to help him. A premixed mortar is being made with water. The man measures from the wall to the middle. The man starts laying the mortar. He places a concrete block onto it in place. Measures to make sure it's straight. He lays mortar for the second block nearby. He places mortar on one end of the new block and lays it down connecting the two (7:17-10:40). He pounds the block down with his hand. He uses a carpenter's tool to make sure there is a true right angle. The man starts laying more mortar. He lays more blocks. The wall is rising as he does it. A right angle corner is built six courses high. The younger boys continue to assist in some capacity. The man stretches a guideline along the wall to assist in placing the blocks correctly. he places a new block down. The woman visits them as they are pausing during work. She takes the boys away and the man lays more mortar. The woman writes a list. She takes a can of beets out of a cabinet, looks at it, puts it back (10:41-15:06). The man continues to build the wall. Mortar placed on a block and then its put in place. More mortar is laid with a trowel. The trowel is scrapped against excess mortar to smooth it out. The outer walls are almost all complete. The man bolts upright posts to the wall for the roof structure. He then places a piece of wood on top and hammers it. The boys help the man lift wood. One of the boys guides it. The man hammers some nails into the wood. He is putting beams across the roof (15:07-18:22). More wood for the roof is put across. The man then fills the roof with mortar and evens it with a trowel. The boys carry concrete blocks. Wood and concrete help make the roof. No mortar is needed (18:23-20:40). The boys move a concrete block. They hand it to the man and he put it on the roof. He smooths out concrete with a trowel. The woman is outside and hands the boy a bag of groceries. The younger boy leads the woman into the newly constructed shelter. The other boy and man come in as well. The woman has her shelter all set with food and a bed. The man comes in and praises her good work. He hands her a flashlight. The boys bring in board games. Exterior of the house (20:41-23:28). End credits (23:29-24:09). Released in 1954 and later recalled by the U.S. Government, "Time of Disaster" is a classic Cold War film that was intended to awaken the American public to their responsibilities in a moment of disaster -- be it from a tornado, hurricane, earthquake -- or an atomic bomb. According to an excerpt from a civil defense newsletter, film explains “the responsibilities of the Federal Civil Defense Administration and other groups in wresting from natural disasters part of the toll it would normally take.” The film's undercurrent is that while weather catastrophes and everyday emergencies may occur, what is really scary and what we really need to prepare for -- is a surprise attack by a foreign power may be just as likely to occur. The film focuses on a town “anywhere in the United States”, which has just fallen victim to an unspecified natural disaster. Fortunately, this place has implemented a thorough civil defense plan, and while the town is reduced to rubble, rescue workers quickly scramble to restore order. The closing moments of the film feature an atomic bomb explosion as the narrator remarks of the burst, "this time of disaster all of us hope never comes but should this disaster ever strike, our chances of survival will be all the greater through civil defense training and preparation!" Although the film deals almost exclusively with natural disasters, it was deemed obsolete by 1965 when the Office of Civil Defense was promoting protection from fallout radiation above all else. Government copies of the film were recalled and private owners were encouraged to cease screenings. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. The 1960's 'Protect and Survive'? Civil Defence Information Bulletin were a series of seven public information films dealing with civil defence measures individuals and families could take in the event of a nuclear attack on Great Britain. They were produced for the Home Office and the Scottish Home and Health Department by RHR Productions United Kingdom in 1964. The writer was Nicolas Alwyn and the producer Ronald H. Riley. In the event of an international crisis, these films were to be broadcast by all television networks in the U.K., in much the same manner as the Protect and Survive films were to be broadcast in the 1980s. It refers to Civil Defence Handbook No. 10, entitled Advising the Householder on Protection against Nuclear Attack. There was a total of 7 films. Each film was a few minutes long and would feature the ominous jingle with the civil defence logo. Then there was a blank title card on the subject matter and then a mix of live-action clips, animation and still images. Majority of the advice is similar to Protect and Survive such as the idea of building a core (referred to as an inner refuge in Protect and Survive) and the idea of white washing the windows to prevent fires. To counter this threat the United States has arrayed many early warning systems including the DEW Line and NORAD, fallout shelters, counter-strike weapons -- and huge stockpiles of medical, engineering and other supplies buried in underground bunkers. The film makes clear that the survival of every family in a nuclear disaster will rest with individuals, since "the strange menace of fallout" might make it impossible for aid to be delivered by government entities. The film shows a fallout shelter with fully stocked shelves of canned goods, intended to ensure two weeks of survive for a typical family. In this way, national security was equated with personal responsibility. This film also shows early Univac computers in use at the 8 minute mark. Civil defense

Civil defense, civil defence (see spelling differences) or civil protection is an effort to protect the citizens of a state (generally non-combatants) from military attack. It uses the principles of emergency operations: prevention, mitigation, preparation, response, or emergency evacuation and recovery. Programs of this sort were initially discussed at least as early as the 1920s and were implemented in some countries during the 1930s as the threat of war and aerial bombardment grew. It became widespread after the threat of nuclear weapons was realized.

Since the end of the Cold War, the focus of civil defense has largely shifted from military attack to emergencies and disasters in general. The new concept is described by a number of terms, each of which has its own specific shade of meaning, such as crisis management, emergency management, emergency preparedness, contingency planning, emergency services, and civil protection.

In some countries, civil defense is seen as a key part of "total defense". For example, in Sweden, the Swedish word totalförsvar refers to the commitment of a wide range of resources of the nation to its defense - including to civil protection. Respectively, some countries (notably the Soviet Union) may have or have had military-organized civil defense units (Civil Defense Troops) as part of their armed forces or as a paramilitary service.
