Although government-related activities are predominant, other pursuits also occur within the district, including industrial activity, entertainment and warehousing. For example, there are Chinese restaurants near Civic Center's border with Chinatown, in addition to some museums and some residential buildings in the Civic Center area. The area is roughly 10 blocks long and 5 blocks wide, but is far less dense than most of Manhattan, where the average number of residents for an area that size is 35,000; the Civic Center has approximately 20,000 residents.
City Hall Park is a 1.3ac (5.3ha) park located in the Pioneer Squareneighborhood of Seattle, Washington on a block bounded by 3rd Avenue on the southwest, Dilling Way on the southeast, 4th Avenue on the northeast, and the King County Courthouse on the northwest. It is so named because when it was laid out in 1916, the King County Courthouse was the County-City Building, housing both Seattle and King County government. City offices moved out in 1962.
In local government, a city hall, town hall, civic centre, (in the UK or Australia) a guildhall, a Rathaus (German), or (more rarely) a municipal building, is the chief administrative building of a city, town, or other municipality. It usually houses the city or town council, its associated departments, and their employees. It also usually functions as the base of the mayor of a city, town, borough, or county / shire.
By convention, until the mid 19th-century, a single large open chamber (or 'hall') formed an integral part of the building housing the council. The hall may be used for council meetings and other significant events. This large chamber, the 'town hall', (and its later variant 'city hall') has become synonymous with the whole building, and with the administrative body housed in it. The terms 'council chambers', 'municipal building' or variants may be used locally in preference to 'town hall' if no such large hall is present within the building.
The local government may endeavor to use the town hall building to promote and enhance the quality of life of the community. In many cases, "'town halls' serve not only as buildings for government functions, but also have facilities for various civic and cultural activities. These may include art shows, stage performances, exhibits and festivals. Modern town halls or "civic centres" are often designed with a great variety and flexibility of purpose in mind.
The building was designed by Lockwood and Mawson, and opened in 1873.
Winston Churchill gave his first speech after the Second Battle of El Alamein outside the hall in which he called for the people to 'go forward together and put these grave matters to the proof'.
Before its relocation, between 1847 to 1872, the town hall had been the Fire Station House in Swain Street. In 1869, a new triangular site was purchased, and a competition held for a design to rival the town halls of Leeds and Halifax. The local firm of Lockwood and Mawson was chosen over the other 31entries. It was built by John Ives & Son of Shipley and took three years to build at a cost of £100,000. It was opened on 9September 1873, on a very wet day by Matthew Thompson, the mayor.
It was first extended in 1909 to a design by Norman Shaw and executed by architect F.E.P. Edwards, with another council chamber, more committee rooms and a banqueting hall. It was extended again in 1914 with a new entrance and staircase in baroque marble by William Williamson and listed gradeI on 14June 1963.
Almost two years after closure, Seattle's City Hall Park reopens
A historic downtown Seattle park reopened to the public Tuesday almost two years after it was closed due to crime concerns.
City Hall Park, located on Third Avenue in the Pioneer Square neighborhood, had been closed since August 2021 after years of complaints about public safety.
An event celebrating the reopening was attended by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation AP Diaz and other local leaders.
The 1.3-acre park will now regularly have games, food trucks, concerts and art installations, according to a city release. Two park rangers will also be staffed during all open hours.

King County begins relocating homeless residents from City Hall Park in Seattle
Outreach providers were joined by city and county workers Tuesday at City Hall Park in Seattle’s Pioneer Square to begin clearing what’s become a notorious and controversial homeless encampment.
According to an email from the King County Executive’s Chief of Staff April Putney, homeless outreach group JustCare and partner organizations have been working with about 52 people living at the park over the last six weeks to create a long-term plan for them to move into indoor shelter.
The initial planning was completed at the end of last week, Putney’s email said, with workers conducting the moves through this week.

NYPD moves remaining Occupy City Hall protesters from City Hall park
A line of NYPD officers pushed the remaining Occupy City Hall protesters out of a month long encampment next to City Hall Wednesday morning.
Officers moved in just before 4 a.m., pushing about 70 remaining occupants - a mix of protesters and homeless -- north on Centre Street to Foley Square, where they began to disperse.
Police then began to take down the makeshift tents and remnants of the encampment, which started on June 23 as a protest for police reform.
Seven people were arrested. No officers were hurt. Police temporarily shut access to the Brooklyn Bridge during the action.

Defund police protesters continue vigil in City Hall Park
The view from NewsCopter 7 Wednesday morning was in contrast to one day earlier, when NYPD efforts to clear Centre Street resulted in a brief clash.
The Defund Police protesters remained camped out Wednesday morning across from NYC City Hall, the morning after City Council passed a budget that includes $1 billion in NYPD funding cuts.
NYPD officers dismantled makeshift barricades the protesters put up Tuesday night on the streets around City Hall, and met little resistance as they surrounded a noticeably smaller contingent who stayed overnight in the park.
Two people were arrested when the blockades, constructed with metal barricades and various other street materials, and reinforced with rebar, were taken down on Chambers and Centre streets just before the morning commute started.
