The City Hall, Dublin (Irish:Halla na Cathrach, Baile Átha Cliath), originally the Royal Exchange, is a civic building in Dublin, Ireland. It was built between 1769 and 1779 to the designs of architect Thomas Cooley and is a notable example of 18th-century architecture in the city.
Overview
Located at the top of Parliament Street on the city's southern side, it stands next to Dublin Castle, the centre of British government in Ireland until 1922. The street had been built in 1753, providing a continuation of Capel Street on the north bank of the Liffey, across the newly widened Essex Bridge, and so the exchange ended (and still ends) a long streetscape.
The external structure is primarily made out of white Portland stone from a quarry in Dorset. The large size and fine fittings of the Royal exchange, with carved capitals by Simon Vierpyl, and plasterwork by the leading stuccodore Charles Thorpe, reflect the standing and prestige of Dublin in the 18th Century. The neo-classical building contains a central entrance hall or Rotunda, with a large dome supported by twelve columns which is surrounded by an ambulatory where the merchants strolled and discussed business meetings.
In local government, a city hall, town hall, civic centre, (in the UK or Australia) a guildhall, a Rathaus (German), or (more rarely) a municipal building, is the chief administrative building of a city, town, or other municipality. It usually houses the city or town council, its associated departments, and their employees. It also usually functions as the base of the mayor of a city, town, borough, or county / shire.
By convention, until the mid 19th-century, a single large open chamber (or 'hall') formed an integral part of the building housing the council. The hall may be used for council meetings and other significant events. This large chamber, the 'town hall', (and its later variant 'city hall') has become synonymous with the whole building, and with the administrative body housed in it. The terms 'council chambers', 'municipal building' or variants may be used locally in preference to 'town hall' if no such large hall is present within the building.
The local government may endeavor to use the town hall building to promote and enhance the quality of life of the community. In many cases, "'town halls' serve not only as buildings for government functions, but also have facilities for various civic and cultural activities. These may include art shows, stage performances, exhibits and festivals. Modern town halls or "civic centres" are often designed with a great variety and flexibility of purpose in mind.
The building was designed by Lockwood and Mawson, and opened in 1873.
Winston Churchill gave his first speech after the Second Battle of El Alamein outside the hall in which he called for the people to 'go forward together and put these grave matters to the proof'.
Before its relocation, between 1847 to 1872, the town hall had been the Fire Station House in Swain Street. In 1869, a new triangular site was purchased, and a competition held for a design to rival the town halls of Leeds and Halifax. The local firm of Lockwood and Mawson was chosen over the other 31entries. It was built by John Ives & Son of Shipley and took three years to build at a cost of £100,000. It was opened on 9September 1873, on a very wet day by Matthew Thompson, the mayor.
It was first extended in 1909 to a design by Norman Shaw and executed by architect F.E.P. Edwards, with another council chamber, more committee rooms and a banqueting hall. It was extended again in 1914 with a new entrance and staircase in baroque marble by William Williamson and listed gradeI on 14June 1963.
Dublin (formerly, Amador and Dougherty's Station) is a suburban city of the East (San Francisco) Bay region of Alameda County, California, United States. Located along the north side of Interstate 580 at the intersection with Interstate 680, roughly 10 miles (16km) east of Hayward, 6 miles (9.7km) west of Livermore, directly north of Pleasanton, and 35 miles (56km) north of San Jose, it was named after the city of Dublin in Ireland. The nearest major city is Oakland, approximately 25 miles (40km) to the west-northwest on Interstate 580. Dublin is the second fastest-growing city in the state of California, behind only Santa Clarita. The population was 46,063 (2010 census), and the 2013 estimate at 49,890. It is forecast that by 2030, the population will grow to about 75,900. Dublin is home to the headquarters of Sybase, Inc, now part of SAP SE, Tria Beauty, Medley Health and Arlen Ness.
Government
The City of Dublin is a general law city operating under a City Council / City Manager form of local government. This form of government combines an elected mayor and council and an appointed local government administrator. The City Council elections are nonpartisan. The Mayor serves a two-year term, and Council members serve four-year terms.
Dublin (Irish:Barúntacht Bhaile Átha Cliath ) is one of the baronies of Ireland, an historical geographical unit of land. Its chief town is Donnybrook. It was created by the 1840 Acts from lands that were previously liberties in the county of the City of Dublin. Its name and area were confirmed by the Dublin Baronies Act 1842.
Location
It is separated from the city proper by the line of the Grand canal with the Grand Canal Dock forming the northern land boundary along with the Great South Wall. Sandymount Strand at Irishtown forms the eastern boundary in a narrow strip of land extending as far as Blackrock. The Barony of Rathdown, whose chief town is Dún Laoghaire, forms the bulk of its southern border. To the west lies the barony of Uppercross, whose chief town is Tallaght.
Legal context
Baronies were created after the Norman invasion as subdivisions of counties and were used for administration. Baronies continue to be regarded as officially defined units, but they are no longer used for many administrative purposes. While they have been administratively obsolete since 1898, they continue to be used in land registration and specification such as in planning permissions. In many cases, a barony corresponds to an earlier Gaelic túath which had submitted to the Crown. This is not true in the case of this barony which was only created in 1840 out of parts of the Liberties of the City of Dublin. Previously, many of these townlands were part of the Barony of Dublin City. That the Barony of Dublin and the Barony of Dublin City are distinct is shown by a 1985 statutory instrument adjusting their boundaries, and the inclusion of the 1842 Act in a 2007 list of unrepealed legislation. Both baronies lie within the former county borough of Dublin, since 2001 redesignated the City of Dublin.

5pm in Bradford. The clock tower of Bradford City Hall (formally Town Hall) was opened on 9th September 1873 until 1965 when it became City Hall. The tower height is 220ft and was inspired by Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy and houses 13 bells. The largest bell weighing in excess of 87cwt and was named Matthew William, after Alderman Matthew William Thompson the Mayor at the time, and was cast by John Taylor and Co in 1873. The Tower also houses a carillon and is equipped to play different tunes, especially Christmas carols during the festive period.
A look at Bradford City Hall Clock and the City Park, West Yorkshire, on Monday 26th January 2015.
The bell tower was inspired by Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. It contains a carillon of 13 bells though the clock was not added until 1937.
Bradford City Hall was designed by Lockwood and Mawson, and opened in 1873.

The city hall in my mind, met last night Rumors of reelection started to fly It's my funeral today, my funeral today I laid it down Underneath the sound It's my principle concern, my principle concern is what you say But I wanted it this way. Cause I'm throwin down without a fight You're more than welcome to look around Consult your checklist go underground I'll claim a stake here inside the frame But I'm going under another way I won't return after today So I'm at liberty to say what's on my mind And it some I like You can't watch me, you can't make me like before When I was yours when all I wanted was the door So I'm throwin down without a fight You're more than welcome to look around Consult your checklist go underground I'll claim a stake here inside the frame But I'm going under another way Decision on the dock head Make up your mind and if you get consensus Drop me a line The city hall in my mind, got together last night
