Christ Lutheran Church and Parsonage, originally the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ellenville, is a historic Lutheranchurch and parsonage located at Ellenville, Ulster County, New York. The church was built in 1862 in the Greek Revival style. It was moved, enlarged, reoriented, and completely remodeled in 1903–1904 in the Gothic Revival style when moved to its present location. It is a roughly L-shaped building, with a T-shaped main block consisting of a 11⁄2-story, gable-roofed front block and 11⁄2-story gable-roofed rear block. Appended to it is a 1-story addition. It features a two-tiered, square bell tower, central front entrance flanked by blind bays, and Gothic arched stained glass windows. The parsonage is a 2-story, three-bay-wide, Greek Revival–style brick dwelling built about 1850.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Christ congregation was founded in 1868 above a blacksmith shop on East14th Street. The congregation was of German and English descent. A more permanent presence was established in 1882 when the church purchased the former mission chapel, the Chapel of Free Grace, located at 406 East 19th Street, which had been built in 1859 by St. George's Episcopal Church. It was a gable-fronted steeply pitched masonry Gothic Revival church with a gable rose window.
The 19th Street church was demolished when Metropolitan Life Insurance redeveloped the area into Stuyvesant Town in 1948. The congregation's new church, a block to the west on 15th Street, was built in 1948 and was designed by Herbert E. Matz in the Gothic Revival style. This structures was sold in 2007 to a developer who adaptively reused the church as a residence and added a luxury condo tower with six three-bedroom units above the church. Thereafter the congregation has been meeting in "the facilities of the Seafarer and International House at 123 East 15th Street at Irving Place."
Luther's efforts to reform the theology and practice of the Catholic Church launched the Protestant Reformation in the German-speaking territories of the Holy Roman Empire. Beginning with the Ninety-Five Theses, first published in 1517, Luther's writings were disseminated internationally, spreading the early ideas of the Reformation beyond the influence and control of the Roman Curia and the Holy Roman Emperor. The split between the Lutherans and the Catholics was made public and clear with the 1521 Edict of Worms: The edicts of the Diet condemned Luther and officially banned citizens of the Holy Roman Empire from defending or propagating his ideas, subjecting advocates of Lutheranism to forfeiture of all property, half of the seized property to be forfeit to the imperial government and the remaining half forfeit to the party who brought the accusation. The divide centered primarily on two points: the proper source of authority in the church, often called the formal principle of the Reformation, and the doctrine of justification, often called the material principle.
The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), often referred to simply as the Missouri Synod, is a traditional, confessional Lutherandenomination in the United States. With 2.1 million members, it is both the eighth-largest Protestant denomination and the second-largest Lutheran body in the U.S., the largest being Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The LCMS was organized in 1847 at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois as the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, a name which reflected the geographic locations of the founding congregations. The LCMS is headquartered in Kirkwood, Missouri.
The LCMS has congregations in all 50 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, but over half of its members are located in the Midwest. It is a member of the International Lutheran Council, and is in altar and pulpit fellowship with most of that group's members. The LCMS is divided into 35 districts—33 of which are geographic and two (the English and the SELC) are non-geographic. The current president is the Rev. Matthew C. Harrison, who took office on September 1, 2010.
