Russian Missionary in China | How not to do mission work (Christian Orthodox)
I remember a Russian missionary in China who was speaking to a monk on Mount Athos and saying that the Chinese are people whom one can’t possibly convert, there is nothing one can do about it, and Fr. Don’t you see that all these statues, all these images are wood and stone? Throw them out, break them, embrace the true faith.” And Silouan said to him, “And what happens next?” “They beat me up and throw me out.” And Silouan said, “You know, that’s not a way of converting them.” “And what should I do? I cannot accept the untruth, which they hold.” “No,” said Silouan, “but listen to them and appreciate the depth of their devotion,...

I cannot accept the untruth, which they hold.” “No,” said Silouan, “but listen to them and appreciate the depth of their devotion, listen to the way in which they pray to their God because there is only one God anyhow. And when they have ended, when you have been duly impressed by their own devotion and faith, tell the priests that you are a Christian and you would like to understand more about them. Could you sit outside the temple with them and they would explain to you the tenets of their faith? And you sit down, you listen and every time an occasion offers itself, you stop the speaker and say, “How beautiful what you have just said! If you just added that grain of salt, it will blossom out to perfection.” And you say just something from your faith in Christ and from the Gospel, and you will have done all you have got to do because you will have opened their heart and mind to the Gospel.” And I think this is something which we can feel all the time.

I entered the Orthodox Church to seek the truth and to reconcile traditional Chinese values with Christianity. I found the truth and more.
In the early days of the Orthodox Church in Greece, there was a notable approach to coexistence with the works of "Pagan" pre-Christian Greeks, such as Homer and Socrates. Saint Justin the Martyr introduced the concept of "Spermatikos Logos," which posited that God's truth manifests through all individuals, and the entire human race participates in God's divine plan. Those who live in accordance with God's truth can be considered followers of Christianity, and it's conceivable that certain elements of truth may exist within some Pagan religions.
It comes as no surprise that Saint Nicholas of the Orthodox tradition held Confucius, a prominent figure in Chinese Confucianism, in the highest regard among pre-Christian thinkers. Given the similarities between Confucianism and the teachings of Jesus, we may contemplate the possibility that truth can also find resonance within Chinese culture.
"Chinese civilization is the oldest of all that currently exist on our planet. Originating more than four thousand years ago, it has gone through a gigantic historical path of formation and development. Along this path, she was invariably characterized by traits that evoke deep respect and admiration in every Christian. These traits are love and the desire to know the truth.
It is to the comprehension of the truth that our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ calls people. “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free,” He says (John 8:32). But the great ancient Chinese sage, Kung Fu Tzu, whom we call Confucius, and the Chinese - “teacher of ten thousand generations,” repeatedly asserted that knowledge of the truth is the most important thing in a person’s life.
And the similarity between the ideological basis of Chinese civilization - Confucianism and Christianity - does not end there. Christ gave humanity the famous “golden rule”: “In everything you want people to do to you, do so to them” (Matthew 7:12). The great Confucius, almost half a thousand years before Christ, spoke about almost the same thing. To the student’s question: “Is it possible to be guided throughout your life by one word?” Confucius replied: “The word is reciprocity. Do not do to others what you do not wish for yourself” (“Lun Yu” (“Conversations and Judgments”) chapter 15, verse 23).
It is not surprising that one of the greatest Orthodox saints of the 20th century, St. Nicholas of Serbia, highly valued Confucius, placing him almost above all other pre-Christian sages. And the position of the Orthodox Church on this matter is clear. It was expressed back in the 2nd century by the outstanding Christian thinker Saint Justin the Philosopher in relation to the pre-Christian philosophers of Greece: “Christ is [God] the Word, in whom the entire human race is involved. Those who lived in accordance [with God] are Christians, even if they were considered [non-Christians] - such among the Hellenes are Socrates, Heraclitus and the like.” “In every nation,” said Saint Justin the Philosopher ,
