The average and instantaneous rates of reaction are concepts used in chemistry to describe how the concentration of reactants or products changes over time.
Average Rate of Reaction
The average rate of reaction is calculated over a specific time interval. It is defined as the change in concentration of a reactant or product divided by the change in time. The formula for the average rate can be expressed as:
{Average Rate} = Delta [{Concentration}]/{Delta t}
Where:
Delta [{Concentration}]) is the change in concentration (mol/L) of the reactant or product.
Delta (t) is the change in time (usually in seconds).
This gives an overall view of how fast the reaction occurs over that period.

{Average Rate} = Delta [{Concentration}]/{Delta t}
Where:
Delta [{Concentration}]) is the change in concentration (mol/L) of the reactant or product.
Delta (t) is the change in time (usually in seconds).
This gives an overall view of how fast the reaction occurs over that period.
Instantaneous Rate of Reaction
The instantaneous rate of reaction, on the other hand, refers to the rate at a specific point in time. It is determined by taking the derivative of the concentration with respect to time at that moment. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:
{Instantaneous Rate} = d{Concentration} /{dt}
Where:
d[{Concentration}]/{dt} ) represents the derivative, indicating how the concentration changes at a specific moment.
To approximate the instantaneous rate during a reaction, you can find the slope of the tangent line to the curve of concentration versus time at a specific point on a concentration-time graph.
Summary
Average Rate: Calculated over a time interval, gives a general rate of reaction.
Instantaneous Rate: Calculated at a specific moment, gives the rate of reaction at that instant.
Both concepts are crucial for understanding chemical kinetics and how reactions progress.
