Charles Wheatstone
Sir Charles Wheatstone /ˈwiːtstən/FRS (6 February 1802 – 19 October 1875), was an English scientist and inventor of many scientific breakthroughs of the Victorian era, including the English concertina, the stereoscope (a device for displaying three-dimensional images), and the Playfair cipher (an encryption technique). However, Wheatstone is best known for his contributions in the development of the Wheatstone bridge, originally invented by Samuel Hunter Christie, which is used to measure an unknown electrical resistance, and as a major figure in the development of telegraphy.
Life
Charles Wheatstone was born in Barnwood, Gloucester. His father was a music-seller in the town, who moved to 128 Pall Mall, London, four years later, becoming a teacher of the flute. Charles, the second son, went to a village school, near Gloucester, and afterwards to several institutions in London. One of them was in Kennington, and kept by a Mrs. Castlemaine, who was astonished at his rapid progress. From another he ran away, but was captured at Windsor, not far from the theatre of his practical telegraph. As a boy he was very shy and sensitive, liking well to retire into an attic, without any other company than his own thoughts.

John Jones (physician)
John Jones (1644 or 1645 – 22 August 1709) was a Welsh cleric, inventor and physician.
Life
Jones, whose family was from Pentyrch, Glamorgan, was educated at Jesus College, Oxford, where he matriculated on 28 June 1662. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1666, with further degrees of Master of Arts in 1670, Bachelor of Civil Law in 1673 and Doctor of Civil Law in 1677. He was a Fellow of the college from 1667 to 1668. He became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1677, obtaining a licence from Oxford University in the following year to practise medicine and working thereafter in Windsor, Berkshire. He was appointed chancellor of Llandaff Cathedral in 1686, but the then Bishop of Llandaff, William Beaw, disputed the appointment and Jones was not able to take up his position until 1691.
His works included a treatise, in Latin, on fevers (De febribus intermittentibus) (1683), and The Mysteries of Opium Revealed (1700) (which was described by one commentator as "extraordinary and perfectly unintelligible".) He also invented a clock which Robert Plot described as being "moved by the air, equally expressed out of bellows of a cylindrical form, falling into folds in its descent, much after the manner of paper lanterns." After his death, on 22 August 1709, he was buried near the west door of Llandaff Cathedral.

Sir Charles Wheatstone was the first person to coin the phrase "microphone." Wheatstone was among the first scientists to formally recognize that sound was "transmitted by waves through mediums." This knowledge led him to explore ways of transmitting sounds from one place to another, even over long distances. He worked on a device that could amplify weak sounds, which he called a microphone. He also invented the English concertina and the Playfair cipher.
Sir Charles Wheatstone was born near Gloucester on 6 February 1802. He was the son of a music-seller, who later moved to London to teach the flute. Charles was originally apprenticed to his uncle, a maker of musical instruments, but became interested in science after buying a book on Volta’s experiments.
He kept his connections with music, however, through his researches into acoustics and his musical inventions, which included the concertina. It was this research that made his name and resulted in his being appointed to the Chair of Experimental Physics at King’s College, London.
Sir Charles is most famous for two instruments: the Cooke-Wheatstone telegraph and the Wheatstone bridge. The latter was actually the invention of S W Christie, but Wheatstone was the first to draw attention to its capabilities. The telegraph was the original idea of Sir William Fothergill Cooke, who turned to Wheatstone for scientific advice after running into problems with its development.
In 1837, after some debate, they went into partnership and patented a five-needle telegraph. This instrument was very successful, but Cooke and Wheatstone soon argued over who should be credited with its invention. The case went to arbitration and it was decided that Cooke had introduced the telegraph as a workable instrument, but Wheatstone had prepared for its reception by his scientific researches.
Wheatstone also made important contributions to the measurement of the velocity of electricity and light and the development of cyphers (he was the inventor of the ‘Playfair’ code). He was a member of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1836, and knighted in 1868. He died in Paris on 19 October 1875.

WHEATSTONE BRIDGE: Wheatstone, Sir Charles 1802--1875, British physicist. Wheatstone was professor of experimental philosophy at King's College, London. He is remembered for his researches in electricity, sound, and light. In 1834 he devised a revolving mirror for an experiment to measure the speed of electricity in a conductor. In 1843 he constructed the Wheatstone bridge and began to popularize its use. He initiated the use of electromagnets in electric generators, and in 1837 he and Sir William Fothergill Cooke patented an early telegraph.The Wheatstone bridge is a specific circuit that is used for measuring resistances and has many and varied applications in instrumentation systems. There are two basic modes of bridge operation. In one mode the bridge can be used to determine the value of an unknown resistance to a high degree of accuracy by comparing it with an accurately known resistance.The value of the unknown resistance is measured by varying the resistance is measured by varying the resistance of one of three other resistors in the bridge circuit to obtain a balanced condition in which the bridge has zero output voltage, that is, a voltage "null".
In the other mode, the bridge is in an unbalanced state and the value of the bridge output voltage. This is sometimes referred to an "off-null" operation. If a resistance type transducer, for example a thermistor, a photo-conductor, or a strain gauge, is used as the unknown resistance, then the bridge output voltage will depend directly on the transducer resistance. For the Wheatstone bridge, Point B and D are generally stretched outward, giving the characteristics diamond -- shaped bridge circuit .

In the Nutty Putty cave, John Jones became trapped in a tight squeeze that turned out to be a dead end. 27 hours of intense rescue effort ended in tragedy. Sir Charles Wheatstone FRS FRSE DCL LLD, was an English scientist and inventor of many scientific breakthroughs of the Victorian era. He is best known for inventing the telegraph as well as the stereoscope and electric circuit known as the Wheatstone bridge. Sir Charles Wheatstone was the first person to coin the phrase "microphone." Wheatstone was among the first scientists to formally recognize that sound was "transmitted by waves through mediums." This knowledge led him to explore ways of transmitting sounds from one place to another, even over long distances. He worked on a device that could amplify weak sounds, which he called a microphone. He also invented the English concertina and the Playfair cipher.
Sir Charles Wheatstone was born near Gloucester on 6 February 1802. He was the son of a music-seller, who later moved to London to teach the flute. Charles was originally apprenticed to his uncle, a maker of musical instruments, but became interested in science after buying a book on Volta’s experiments.
He kept his connections with music, however, through his researches into acoustics and his musical inventions, which included the concertina. It was this research that made his name and resulted in his being appointed to the Chair of Experimental Physics at King’s College, London.
Sir Charles is most famous for two instruments: the Cooke-Wheatstone telegraph and the Wheatstone bridge. The latter was actually the invention of S W Christie, but Wheatstone was the first to draw attention to its capabilities. The telegraph was the original idea of Sir William Fothergill Cooke, who turned to Wheatstone for scientific advice after running into problems with its development.
In 1837, after some debate, they went into partnership and patented a five-needle telegraph. This instrument was very successful, but Cooke and Wheatstone soon argued over who should be credited with its invention. The case went to arbitration and it was decided that Cooke had introduced the telegraph as a workable instrument, but Wheatstone had prepared for its reception by his scientific researches.
Wheatstone also made important contributions to the measurement of the velocity of electricity and light and the development of cyphers (he was the inventor of the ‘Playfair’ code). He was a member of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1836, and knighted in 1868. He died in Paris on 19 October 1875.

WHEATSTONE BRIDGE: Wheatstone, Sir Charles 1802--1875, British physicist. Wheatstone was professor of experimental philosophy at King's College, London. He is remembered for his researches in electricity, sound, and light. In 1834 he devised a revolving mirror for an experiment to measure the speed of electricity in a conductor. In 1843 he constructed the Wheatstone bridge and began to popularize its use. He initiated the use of electromagnets in electric generators, and in 1837 he and Sir William Fothergill Cooke patented an early telegraph.The Wheatstone bridge is a specific circuit that is used for measuring resistances and has many and varied applications in instrumentation systems. There are two basic modes of bridge operation. In one mode the bridge can be used to determine the value of an unknown resistance to a high degree of accuracy by comparing it with an accurately known resistance.The value of the unknown resistance is measured by varying the resistance is measured by varying the resistance of one of three other resistors in the bridge circuit to obtain a balanced condition in which the bridge has zero output voltage, that is, a voltage "null".
In the other mode, the bridge is in an unbalanced state and the value of the bridge output voltage. This is sometimes referred to an "off-null" operation. If a resistance type transducer, for example a thermistor, a photo-conductor, or a strain gauge, is used as the unknown resistance, then the bridge output voltage will depend directly on the transducer resistance. Charles Wheatstone
Sir Charles Wheatstone /ˈwiːtstən/FRS (6 February 1802 – 19 October 1875), was an English scientist and inventor of many scientific breakthroughs of the Victorian era, including the English concertina, the stereoscope (a device for displaying three-dimensional images), and the Playfair cipher (an encryption technique). However, Wheatstone is best known for his contributions in the development of the Wheatstone bridge, originally invented by Samuel Hunter Christie, which is used to measure an unknown electrical resistance, and as a major figure in the development of telegraphy.
Life
Charles Wheatstone was born in Barnwood, Gloucester. His father was a music-seller in the town, who moved to 128 Pall Mall, London, four years later, becoming a teacher of the flute. Charles, the second son, went to a village school, near Gloucester, and afterwards to several institutions in London. One of them was in Kennington, and kept by a Mrs. Castlemaine, who was astonished at his rapid progress. From another he ran away, but was captured at Windsor, not far from the theatre of his practical telegraph. As a boy he was very shy and sensitive, liking well to retire into an attic, without any other company than his own thoughts.

During Thanksgiving in 2009, The Jones family suffered one of the most devastating losses imaginable. In the Nutty Putty cave, John Jones became trapped in a tight squeeze that turned out to be a dead end. 27 hours of intense rescue effort ended in tragedy.
The information presented in this video is from original documents and first-hand accounts. Where there are slight conflicts in information, I presented the most substantiated version with emphasis on those who were directly in the cave as most accurate.
