The Royal College of Physicians is a British professional body dedicated to improving the practice of medicine, chiefly through the accreditation of physicians by examination. Founded in 1518, it set the first international standard in the classification of diseases, and its library contains medical texts of great historical interest.
The College hosts four training faculties: the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, the Faculty for Pharmaceutical Medicine, the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the Faculty of Physician Associates. The College is sometimes referred to as the Royal College of Physicians of London to differentiate it from other similarly-named bodies. Its home in Regent's Park is one of the few post-war buildings to be granted Grade I listed status.
History
A small group of distinguished physicians, led by the scholar and humanist Thomas Linacre, petitioned King Henry VIII to be incorporated into a College similar to those found in a number of other European countries. The main functions of the College, as set down in the founding Charter, were to grant licenses to those qualified to practice and to punish unqualified practitioners and those engaging in malpractice. This included apothecaries as well as physicians.
It was originally founded as the College of Physicians when it received a Royal Charter in 1518, affirmed by Act of Parliament in 1523. It is not known when the name "Royal College" was first assumed or granted, but it was finally legally confirmed only in 1960 (by the Royal College of Physicians of London Act, which was primarily required in order to move the premises of the College outside of the Cities of London or Westminster to Regent's Park).
Pandura Royal College (Sinhalese:පානදුර රාජකීය විද්යාලය; also known as Royal College, Panadura,Royal College Panadura,Royal Maha Vidyalaya, Panadura) is a provincial school in Panadura, Sri Lanka.
School backgrounds
The school was inaugurated in 1978 as Janadipathy Vidyalaya and later renamed as Royal College Panadura. Current students of the school are referred to in the press as Panadura Royalists. The college conducts classes from grade 1 to 13 in both Sinhala and Tamil medium including English medium from grade six onwards. The college is spread across over 34 acres (140,000m2), and has a complete Information Technology Centre, facilities of over 10 scientific labs, auditoriums, Sports Complex with squash courts, basketball courts and table tennis, an international standard rugby football ground and a modern gymnasium, 2 cricket grounds and nets, swimming pool with diving facilities, along with volleyball and tennis courts.
A Royal College in some Commonwealth countries is technically a college which has received royal patronage and permission to use the prefix Royal. Permission is usually granted through a Royal Charter. The charter normally confers a constitution with perpetual succession and the right to sue or be sued independently of the members. The charter also usually provide for rights of recourse to the Queen in Council. Although incorporation is now cheaply and easily obtainable by registration, the distinction of a Royal Charter means that such charters are still sought by and granted to institutions considered to be in the public interest, typically learned professional societies.
Royal College (also referred to as Royal College Colombo,Royal College, Colombo 7,Colombo Royal College, or simply as Royal) is a selective entryboys' school located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Started as a private school by Rev Joseph Marsh in 1835, it was established as the Colombo Academy by Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton in January 1836, the first government-run secondary school for boys in the island.
Royal College is considered to be the leading public school in Sri Lanka and is often referred to as the "Eton of Sri Lanka". The school was founded in the British public school tradition, having been named the Royal College Colombo in 1881 with royal consent from Queen Victoria, and it was one of the first schools to be designated as a national school by the Sri Lankan government in the 1980s. As a national school it is funded by the government as opposed to the provincial council providing both primary and secondary education. The school was selected as "one of best innovative colleges" in the world by Microsoft in 2009.
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) is a Medical Royal College in the United Kingdom that sets medical training standards for UK physicians. It was founded by the Scottish Physician Robert Sibbald and established by Royal Charter in 1681. While the RCPE is based in Edinburgh, it is not solely a Scottish professional body - more than half of its 12,000 Fellows, Members, Associates and Affiliates live and practice medicine outside Scotland, in 86 countries and covering 55 specialties.
Origin
The twenty-one founding Fellows of the College, (one of whom was Dr William Lauder (1652-1724), brother of John Lauder, Lord Fountainhall), were concerned not only with the advancement of medicine as a reputable science, but also with alleviating the miseries of Edinburgh's poor and needy.
Current activities
The College acts in an advisory capacity to government and other organisations on many aspects of health, welfare and medical education.
Following successful completion of the MRCP(UK) examination, doctors are eligible to become Members and, in time, Fellows of the College.

The Queen visits 500-year-old Royal College of Physicians - Daily Mail
The Queen, 91, visited the Royal College of Physicians in London to mark the 500th anniversary of the institution, which was founded by her distant ancestor King Henry VIII. The Queen opted for a feminine look for the occasion, wearing a crisp blue fitted coat over a blue and white floral-patterned dress (seen left and right). The Royal College of Physicians was established to help regulate the medical profession at a time when a number of unqualified practioners were treating patients.
