Ahmet Ertegun/ˈɑːmɛtˈɛrtəɡən/, Turkish pronunciation:[ahˈmet eɾteˈɟyn]; (July 31[O.S. 18 July]1923 – December 14, 2006) was a Turkish-American businessman, songwriter and philanthropist. He was best known as the founder and president of Atlantic Records, and for discovering and championing many leading rhythm and blues and rock musicians. He also wrote classic blues and pop songs, and served as chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and museum. Ertegun has been described as "one of the most significant figures in the modern recording industry."
Born in Istanbul to an aristocratic Turkish family, Ahmet and his family, including elder brother Nesuhi, moved to Washington, D.C. in 1935, with their father, Münir Ertegün, who served as the second Ambassador (after Ahmet Muhtar Bey, his predecessor between 1927 and 1934) of the then-young Republic of Turkey to the United States of America. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Washington, Münir Ertegün was Ambassador of the Republic to London for two years, during 1932–1934.
"Chains of Love" is a 12-bar blues written by Ahmet Ertegun under the pseudonym "A. Nugetre", which had its first success as sung by Big Joe Turner and later was adopted as part of his repertory by B.B. King. The singer is imprisoned by his love for an unfaithful partner.
Turner's version reached no. 2 on the BillboardR&B chart in 1951, his first success on the Atlantic label established by Ertegun. In 1956, the song was covered by Pat Boone, whose version made no. 10 on the BillboardTop 100. Another commercially successful version was by Bobby Bland, whose recording reached no. 9 on the R&B chart and no. 60 on the pop chart in 1959.
"Chains of Love" is a song written by Ahmet Nugetre and Harry VanWalls, and recorded by American country music artist Mickey Gilley. It was released in October 1977 as the third and final single from his album First Class. The song reached number 9 on the U.S. BillboardHot Country Singles chart and number 7 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada.
Ahmet Ertegun created a new genre of music that combined the African-American music of 1940s Washington, D.C., with the European sensibility.
