How The U.S. Stole This Paradise Island
The story of what happened to the Chagossians still isn’t widely known. But it’s one filled with lies, conspiracy and a violent plan by the U.S. and UK to remove them from their homeland for a military base.

Is this The Best Island in the World? Chagos, Indian Ocean | 22 South | Ep.81
On this episode we are finally in one of our most wanted to visit places, Chagos, it has a lot of history and 2,000 people lived here until in late 60' the British evicted the Chagossians to Mauritius for the US Navy to build a military base in Diego Garcia. We visited the Salomon atol which with Peros Banhos are the only 2 atolls that sailors can stop on passage in the Indian Ocean.
It is truly paradise with incredible wild marine life. Definitely one of our highlights of this circumnavigation, absolutely loved it.
Enjoy and see you next week!

Diego Garcia: The Strategic U.S Military Base in Indian Ocean
Diego Garica was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the early sixteenth century and its name is believed to have come from either an early explorer's ship captain or its navigator. Under the Treaty of Paris of 1814, many of the islands in the Indian Ocean under the control of the French were ceded to Britain, including the Mauritius and the Chagos Islands. In 1965, these islands became the British Indian Ocean Territory. During the 19th Century, the islands were used as plantations, producing copra and coconut oils. Plantations on Diego Garcia were closed in 1971, following a decision to establish the U.S. Navy Support Facility based on the 1966 Exchange of Notes between Great Britain and the United States. In January 1971, U.S. Navy Seabees were transported to the island by landing sh...

What's happening on the Chagos Islands? - BBC What's New?
For more than 150 years, the Chagos Islands were home to the Chagossians. But around 50 years ago, the entire population was forcibly removed to allow the United States to build a military base there - and they've been campaigning to go back home ever since.

The Abandoned Village Of Chagos- Sailing SV Delos Ep. 89
The crew goes on a fishing expedition to the south end of Saloman Atoll in the remote Chagos archipelago and discovers an abandoned village vacated by the Chagosians over 50 years ago. Even though the village has an eerie vibe to it the chance to explore such an amazing place is just too much to pass up. We move Delos from our anchorage at Fuequet Island to Baddam Island to begin our exploration. In one of the abandoned ruined houses we find an old DVD disc, laying in the dirt, that details the history of the Chagosian people and how they were forcibly removed from their home and exiled from their islands. It's a crazy, crazy story..... There are lot's of abandoned buildings, camps, rubbish, and of course massive Coconut Crabs running around. During our time at Baddam the BIOT patro...

Chagos islanders make historic trip home without British escort - BBC News
Five people from Chagos travelling on a boat chartered by the Mauritian government, have made history as the first people to step foot on their archipelago without a British military escort, or sought British authorisation.
The trip is the culmination of years of tug-of-war legal battles with Britain over ownership of the Chagos Islands.
The United Nations' highest court has ruled that Britain's occupation of the islands is illegal, but Britain has refused to hand control to Mauritius.
As the boat landed, Chagossian Suzelle Baptiste said: "It means so much to me."
The BBC's Africa correspondent Andrew Harding reports from the archipelago.

Taking back the Chagos Islands from the British: 'they uprooted us from our beautiful life'
More than 50 years after they were forcibly removed from their homes, the former residents of Britain’s last colony in Africa are challenging the UK’s claim to the archipelago.

After a five-day journey across the ocean, which they returned from this week, a small delegation of Chagos Islanders made an emotional return to their homeland. They were there to symbolically lay claim to the islands for Mauritius, in hopes of eventually resettling there. Olivier Bancoult was just four years old when his family was deported to Mauritius from the Chagos Islands. We follow his journey

CHAGOS - The last REMOTE paradise! - Outside Watch Vlog #8
What an incredible place! In this vlog we set sail from the Maldives... destination, the Seychelles some 1600 nautical miles away. The wind required we head 600 miles due south before we could pick up the southeast trade winds, which would take us to the Seychelles. Along our route was the Chagos Archipelago (part of the British Indian Ocean Territory). Last year we managed to obtain a permit to Anchor in Chagos which made it the perfect place to stop on the way.
Chagos is truly remote. There is nothing there other than palm trees and coconut crabs. There are no people, no services, no internet, nothing.... just you and nature in a lonely atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Its hard to describe how truly amazing this place is. The only people allowed to visit Chagos are cruisi...

Mauritius sends boat to contested Chagos Islands - BBC
Mauritius has sent a scientific mission to the Chagos Islands. The official reason for this boat trip – the first to be organised by Mauritius – is to map the reefs around the archipelago.
But this a highly political – some would say provocative move – by the Mauritian government.
Both the UK and Mauritius claim to hold sovereignty over the Chagos Islands but a recent maritime law tribunal of the United Nations has ruled that Britain has no sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.
The UK government disputes that but says it will give Chagos back to Mauritius when it’s no longer needed for security purposes. America has a military base on one of the islands .

Navy Seabees were transported to the island by landing ship to begin building the U.S. military presence on Diego Garcia. Today Diego Garcia is home to 15 separate commands, including the U.S. Navy Support Facility, which functions as the host command.
Its position is strategically vital for the US, allowing it to project its military strength northwest into the Middle East and South Asia, east into Asia, or west into Africa. It's the most important US base in the Indian Ocean region. Diego Garcia is surrounded by about 60 other atolls. Its coast forms a deep natural harbor, making it the perfect site for a naval base. Diego Garcia has been the site of important military action by the US. On the remote tropical island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean lies a secretive, strategically vital US military base. Before that, the site had proved its strategic importance for US military operations in the Middle East as a base for Air Force attacks in 1991 during the first Gulf War. From the base, long-range B52 bombers embarked on missions to
Afghanistan in 2001, targeting Taliban and Qaeda positions in the country's mountains. The base is also vital as a refueling point for the US Navy and Air Force. Its deep port is able to accommodate aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, and other ships. With Diego Garcia accessible only to restricted US military personnel, its secrecy has attracted speculation. Unlike the US military base in Guam, the spouses of personnel are not allowed on Diego Garcia. No journalist has visited. The UN court ruled that it was illegal for the British to demand possession of the islands as a condition of independence. Shortly afterward, the British leased Diego Garcia to the US. The UN has now served an eviction notice to the British. Though the ruling is not enforceable, it exerts moral pressure and has placed the future of the base in doubt. The base has served as a launchpad for US military operations in the Middle East and as a refueling point for Air Force patrols headed to the South China Sea, and it was even designated an emergency landing spot for space missions by NASA.

During our time at Baddam the BIOT patrol boat shows up and invites us over for a BBQ on their massive ship. We have a hell of a party and end up spending the night. Good times were had by all!
This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.

*****
Way in the middle of the Indian Ocean, there's a tiny group of islands known as Chagos. The only way to get there is by boat but fortunately, we've got Starry Horizons!
This was a fairly quick passage down from the Maldives, but it required us to sail through the doldrums. That meant light winds mixed with big squalls and bumpy seas. Not our favorite conditions, but our reward was an exotic paradise!
Thanks for watching!

The only people allowed to visit Chagos are cruising sailboats who use the atoll to rest while in transit across the Indian Ocean. It really must be one of the last remote paradises left on Earth. Chagos will always hold a special place in our memories as the most awe-inspiring places we have ever laid eyes on!
