Chagos islanders make historic trip home without British escort - BBC News
Five people from Chagos travelling on a boat chartered by the Mauritian government, have made history as the first people to step foot on their archipelago without a British military escort, or sought British authorisation.
The trip is the culmination of years of tug-of-war legal battles with Britain over ownership of the Chagos Islands.
The United Nations' highest court has ruled that Britain's occupation of the islands is illegal, but Britain has refused to hand control to Mauritius.
As the boat landed, Chagossian Suzelle Baptiste said: "It means so much to me."
The BBC's Africa correspondent Andrew Harding reports from the archipelago.

Chagos islands dispute: HRW condemns UK, US actions on archipelago • FRANCE 24 English
Britain is accused of crimes against humanity against the Chagossians. These people were expelled in the 1960s and 1970s from the Chagos archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The reason for their misfortune was the US base in Diego Garcia. Human Rights Watch claims that "the British government secretly planned, with the United States" their deportation to Mauritius and the Seychelles. FRANCE 24's Adboolah Earally and Laurent Berstecher report.

Is this The Best Island in the World? Chagos, Indian Ocean | 22 South | Ep.81
On this episode we are finally in one of our most wanted to visit places, Chagos, it has a lot of history and 2,000 people lived here until in late 60' the British evicted the Chagossians to Mauritius for the US Navy to build a military base in Diego Garcia. We visited the Salomon atol which with Peros Banhos are the only 2 atolls that sailors can stop on passage in the Indian Ocean.
It is truly paradise with incredible wild marine life. Definitely one of our highlights of this circumnavigation, absolutely loved it.
Enjoy and see you next week!

The Abandoned Village Of Chagos- Sailing SV Delos Ep. 89
The crew goes on a fishing expedition to the south end of Saloman Atoll in the remote Chagos archipelago and discovers an abandoned village vacated by the Chagosians over 50 years ago. Even though the village has an eerie vibe to it the chance to explore such an amazing place is just too much to pass up. We move Delos from our anchorage at Fuequet Island to Baddam Island to begin our exploration. In one of the abandoned ruined houses we find an old DVD disc, laying in the dirt, that details the history of the Chagosian people and how they were forcibly removed from their home and exiled from their islands. It's a crazy, crazy story..... There are lot's of abandoned buildings, camps, rubbish, and of course massive Coconut Crabs running around. During our time at Baddam the BIOT patro...

CHAGOS ISLANDS | Will Britain Now Give Them Up?
The Chagos Islands Dispute is perhaps one of the lesser known territorial issues in international politics. However, the question of the Chagos Archipelago - as the territory is also known - has gone all the way to the United Nations General Assembly and the International Court of Justice. So, what is the dispute all about?

Britain has apologised for the eviction of residents of the disputed Chagos islands in the Indian ocean. However, it has said that Mauritius was wrong to take the dispute over the archipelago to the International Court of Justice. Hearings have recently started. Around 2,000 people were forced off the islands in the 1970s to make way for a US military base.

Mauritius sends boat to contested Chagos Islands - BBC
Mauritius has sent a scientific mission to the Chagos Islands. The official reason for this boat trip – the first to be organised by Mauritius – is to map the reefs around the archipelago.
But this a highly political – some would say provocative move – by the Mauritian government.
Both the UK and Mauritius claim to hold sovereignty over the Chagos Islands but a recent maritime law tribunal of the United Nations has ruled that Britain has no sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.
The UK government disputes that but says it will give Chagos back to Mauritius when it’s no longer needed for security purposes. America has a military base on one of the islands .

Mauritius Fights To Reclaim Disputed UK-Owned Chagos Island, Alters Documents Of Islanders
Residents of the disputed UK-owned Chagos Islands are struggling to save their heritage as new identity documents issued by Mauritius & Seychelles have their place of birth altered and parents' names omitted. The place of birth for many islanders has been changed to Mauritius. This comes as the Mauritius government stakes claim to the UK-owned territory. Mauritius has long challenged the British ownership of the Chagos Islands. In the 1960s, most of the Chagos islanders were shipped from Diego Garcia, the largest island, to make way for a US military base. Watch our video to know more.

During our time at Baddam the BIOT patrol boat shows up and invites us over for a BBQ on their massive ship. We have a hell of a party and end up spending the night. Good times were had by all!
This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.

As the United Kingdom prepared to grant independence to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius in the 1960s, it decided to detach the Chagos Islands in order to establish a joint military base with the United States on the island of Diego Garcia - the largest of the Chagos Islands. As part of this, the inhabitants of the islands - which are now known as the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) - were forcibly deported. Since then, Britain has faced numerous court cases over their right to return. Meanwhile, Mauritius has contested the way in which the Islands were originally removed from its control, taking the matter to the United Nations and the ICJ. In this video, I explore the background to the case and explain why, despite a call by the UN General Assembly for Britain to return the Chagos islands to Mauritius, this is unlikely to happen.

The Chagos Islands Dispute is perhaps one of the lesser known territorial issues in international politics. However, the question of the Chagos Archipelago - as the territory is also known - has gone all the way to the United Nations General Assembly and the International Court of Justice. So, what is the dispute all about?
