With an area of 99,633km2 (38,469sqmi), and a population of 1,055,259 as of 2010, it is the twelfth most extensive, and the ninth most populated, of the twenty-three Argentine provinces.
Chaco Province has historically been among Argentina's poorest regions, and presently ranks last by per capita GDP among its provinces, and occupies the twenty-first place on the Human Development Index, though it is above neighbours Formosa and Santiago del Estero.
Etymological derivation of Chaco
Chaco derives from chacú, the Quechua word used to name a hunting territory or the hunting technique used by the people of the Inca Empire.
The northeastern province of Chaco is a productive agricultural region, and has a rich cultural history. It was one of the first in Argentina to officially recognize the languages of its indigenous peoples: the qom, wichi, and mocovi. It is also home to the descendents of Volga Germans and Mennonites from Russia, Germany, and Canada who settled here in the early 20th century.

ARGENTINA - NARCOS: Chaco, a place of interest for drug traffickers
REPORT - ARGENTINA - NARCOS: The Evangelical pastor Jorge Ledesma, , Minister of the International Church, is one of the most popular in the province of Chaco. He has more than 20,000 faithful parishioners and he's about to build a temple to accomodate 30,000. It´s not just God who needs to be thanked. Chaco is often described as "nothing in the middle of nowhere"... Located on the Paraguayan border, it is known for being a drug-transit zone. But it has recently become a place of interest for drug traffickers: due to the abundance of Evangelical churches. Thanks to their reputations, they receive a lot of donations and also take 10% from parishioners´ incomes. Everything is anonymous ... a godsend for the mafias who launder money.
