Catholic schools are maintained parochial schools or education ministries of the Catholic Church. As of 2011, the Church operates the world's largest non-governmental school system. Catholic schools participate in the evangelizing mission of the Church, integrating religious education as the core subject within their curriculum.
Background
Irish immigration provides the main contribution to the increase in Catholic communities across the globe. The Irish immigration established the revival of Catholicism through movement to countries across Europe, United Kingdom and Australia. Historically, the establishment of Catholic schools in Europe encountered various struggles following the creation of the Church of England in the Elizabethan Religious settlements of 1558-63. Anti-Catholicism in this period encouraged Catholics to create modern Catholic education systems to preserve their traditions. The Relief Acts of 1782 and the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829 later increased the possibility to openly practice Catholicism in England and to create charitable institutions by the Church. This led to the development of numerous native religious congregations which established schools, hospitals, orphanages, reformatories, and workhouses.
As required by the Diocese of Lafayette, the school operates a non-discrimination policy in regards to race, gender or religion in the areas of admission, academics, athletics and extracurricular activities, although - for the purpose of demographics - religion, race, and church membership are requested on the admissions application. Catholic High's main feeder school is Saint Edward's (Pre-K through 3rd grade) in New Iberia.

The Catholic school system that shifts millions from poor to rich schools | ABC News
The ABC has obtained access to exclusive documents that show that Catholic schools in New South Wales have been diverting millions of dollars in government funding from poor schools to rich schools.
According to the documents, the aim is to keep school fees low in wealthy Sydney suburbs where competition for enrolments is fierce.
Some parents are worried that it leaves schools in lower and middle income areas even farther behind.

Pride flag controversy: Student walkout turns hostile at Catholic high school in Ontario
Students at a number of Catholic schools in York Region in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Ontario, Canada held walkouts Thursday to demonstrate against the board’s recent decision not to fly the Pride flag outside their headquarters during Pride month.
But at one school, those protests took an unexpected turn.
Dozens of students participated in the walkout at St. Brother Andre in Markham, Ont. But these intended messages were quickly drowned out by the noise of a rowdy crowd that had joined the demonstration.
The disruptive group of students tore through Pride posters, shouted homophobic slurs, danced on Pride flags and threw Pride bracelets and random objects at people, according to witnesses.

Catholic High School (CHS) is one of Singapore’s highly regarded institutions under the auspices of the Catholic Archdiocese. It is a Catholic institution but takes in both Catholic and non-Catholic students. As a full-school, it has both the Primary and Secondary sections housed on the same large compound.
Founded in 1935 by the late Rev. Fr. Edward Becheras, a French missionary, the school had her humble beginnings within the premises of the Church of St Peter and Paul at Queen Street. CHS relocated to its present site in Bishan in 1992 to cope with the demand for places.
Reverend Father Becheras envisioned the school as an institution of learning, and also one for acquiring competence in bilingualism. His enunciation – “The way of the Catholic High School is a way made of two rails – Chinese and English, free from any entanglement, straight to its end. Happy are those who follow. They shall obtain the scope of a sound education” remains firmly as a cornerstone of the school’s philosophy.

Inga Ting reports.

"The Story of Christmas"
