Golden Period of Portuguese Seaborne Global Empire, Estado da India, History of Indian Ocean Part 4
The video depicts the spectacular 16th-century history of the Golden period of Portuguese Estado da India i.e., the State of India, with capital at Goa and power centre at Ormuz, Malacca, Moluccas, Macau, and Mozambique island. Portuguese and Spanish rulers divided the vast non-Christian world between them through the Treaties of Tordesillas(1494) and Zaragoza (1529) to boost trade and acquired new colonies on the principle of the sea with one nation ignoring other European rivals who were busy in local European issues.
Spanish explorers conquered vast areas in the Americas, while the Portuguese expanded into commerce-thriving East Asia, creating trade stations and colonies in India, Indonesia, and China to form the first World Seaborne Global Empire. This began centuries of European imp...

In 1578 King Sebastian I dies and the Iberian Union is established bringing Portugal in war with England and the Dutch. In 1602 the Dutch East India company or VOC is founded and goes on the attack in the east, establishing Batavia as a base. In 1621 the Dutch West India company or WIC is established and carves out Dutch Brazil. The Brazilians defeat them at the Battle of Tabocas and at the Battle of Guararapes, expelling the Dutch from Brazil. In the east the Portuguese fare much worse, losing most of their colonies.
Therefore Brazil becomes more important for Portugal. By the 19th century Brazil is well developed, however many would like independence. Brazil gains independence in 1822 with Pedro I becoming its first emperor. Later Portugal develops
Angola and Mozambique in Africa, however with decolonization, in spite of Salazar's efforts, all Portuguese colonies eventually gain independence.

The Portuguese Empire , also known as the Portuguese Overseas or the Portuguese Colonial Empire , was composed of the overseas colonies and territories governed by Portugal. One of the longest-lived empires in world history, it existed for almost six centuries, from the capture of Ceuta in 1415, to the handover of Portuguese Macau to China in 1999. The empire began in the 15th century, and from the early 16th century it stretched across the globe, with bases in North and South America, Africa, and various regions of Asia and Oceania.
The Portuguese Empire originated at the beginning of the Age of Discovery, and the power and influence of the Kingdom of Portugal would eventually expand across the globe. In the wake of the Reconquista, Portuguese sailors began exploring the coast of Africa and the Atlantic archipelagos in 1418–19, using recent developments in navigation, cartography and maritime technology such as the caravel, with the aim of finding a sea route to the source of the lucrative spice-trade. In 1488 Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and in 1498 Vasco da Gama reached India. In 1500, either by an accidental landfall or by the crown's secret design, Pedro Álvares Cabral invaded Brazil on the American continent's coast.

I know most of you have been wondering why the Portuguese only colonized Brazil of the entire vast South American continent. Well, today, we will answer that question in this video.
Hello, my viewers. Welcome to another exciting video on my channel. Did you know that despite its well-established navy forces and renowned explorers Portuguese only managed to colonize Brazil and left the other parts of the South American continent up for grabs by one of its close rivals including Spain? Yes, I know Brazil is a big country and the leading superpower in the South American continent; however, the Portuguese could have grabbed other countries in the west and south of the continent and were open to colonization Therefore, what makes Brazil special? What was the condition in South America during the colonization period?
History of Portugal
Portuguese colonization of the South American continent and the Formation of Brazil colony
Portuguese activities during the colonization of Brazil'
Surprisingly, early Portuguese goals were to monopolize the lucrative trade of pau-brasil,
the redwood they valued for making dye, giving the colony its name, and establishing permanent settlements. Evidence shows that the Indians and Portuguese initially worked together to harvest trees. Initially, the Portuguese bartered with the natives to bring brazilwood and other forest items to the coast. However, when the natives had accumulated all the tools and pots they needed, they showed a lack of interest in continuing the arrangement. Consequently, the Portuguese turned to violent persuasion and imported an estimated 560,000 Central enslaved Africans who arrived in Brazil during the 17th century and the indigenous slave labor that the Banderas provided. The Portuguese crown made the first systematic effort to establish a government in Brazil in 1533. It divided the colony into 15 hereditary captaincies, or fiefs, each extending 50 leagues, and that is about 160 miles or 260 km along the coast and an indefinite distance inland.
Benefits of Portuguese colonization of Brazil
Independence of Brazil
Talk about a blessing in disguise! Although it was a world power in the middle ages, Portugal's Signs of military decline began with the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in Morocco in 1578 and Spain's attempt to conquer England in 1588 by means of the Spanish Armada while Portugal was then in a dynastic union with Spain and had contributed ships to the Spanish fleet. Further setbacks included the destruction of much of its capital city in an earthquake in 1755. Notably, at the start of the 19th century, Napoleon's invasion of Spain helped lead to independence for Spanish and Portuguese colonies because the Spanish King was imprisoned, so the Empire was weakened. The invasion of Portugal by napoleon caused the Portuguese ruler to flee to Brazil, where his son would later become ruler. Also, the prince, the royal family, and a horde of nobles and functionaries left Portugal on November 29, 1807, under the protection of the British fleet. After several delays, they arrived in Rio de Janeiro on March 7, 1808.
In 1821, Portugal gave Brazil colonial status, which outraged citizens who did not want to be exploited by the King. The new Brazilian leader, Dom Pedro I, led to Brazil gaining independence on September 22, 1822, after writing a letter to his father, King John, who declared Brazil's independence from Portugal. Yey! Therefore, following more than three centuries under Portuguese rule, Brazil gained its independence in 1822 and maintained a monarchical system of government until the abolition of slavery in 1888 and the subsequent proclamation of a republic by the military in 1889.
Legacy of Portuguese colonization of Brazil
There you have it, folks! The Tordesillas Meridian agreement divided South America into two parts, leaving a large chunk of land to be exploited by the Spaniards. The Treaty of Tordesillas has been called the earliest document in Brazilian history since it determined that Portugal would settle part of South America instead of Spain.

SUMMARY
=======
A Captaincy (Spanish: capitanía [kapitaˈni.a], Portuguese: capitania [kɐpitɐˈni.ɐ], Croatian: kapetanija) is a historical administrative division of the former Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires. It was instituted as a method of organization, directly associated with the home-rule administrations of medieval feudal governments in which the monarch delimited territories for colonization that were administered by men of confidence.
The same term was or is used in some other countries, such as Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Ottoman Empire, Slovakia or Austria.

=======

This began centuries of European imperialism in the Indian Ocean in the Mid-16th-century Portugal's Estado da India prospered.
The first part of the video, it is elaborated on how the Portuguese developed international trade in their newly invented and monopolized trade route thru the Cape of Good Hope with the expansion of spice markets in Antwerp and the low countries. This also helped them in getting credit and finances to fund the increasing requirement of Carreira da India including helping them in their operational and shipbuilding.
The next part deals with the threats that emerged after the takeover of the Mamluk Sultanate by the Ottoman Empire in the red sea, Persian Gulf, and Arabian Sea which was tackled by a show of strength by the Portuguese in the Red Sea.
Further, when Magellan's voyage reached Tidore Island in 1521, a new set of disputes emerged from the neighbor Castile which claimed the Moluccas. This was ultimately settled between Portugal and Spain with the signing of the Treaty of Zaragoza in 1529 and ceding claim by Spain to the Moluccas region.
The next part of the video explains the establishment of Estado da India with Goa as the capital and the expansion of the empire from Ormuz to Mozambique to Malacca.
Further, the expansion of trade in China and Japan with the fortification of Macau and Nagasaki was discussed in brief explaining the contribution of missionaries and private trades in the region.
In the concluding part, the video explains the peak period of Portuguese in Estado da India during 1550-60 and the challenges coming ahead in the near future.

SUMMARY
=======
The Portuguese Empire (Portuguese: Império Português), also known as the Portuguese Overseas (Ultramar Português) or the Portuguese Colonial Empire (Império Colonial Português), was one of the largest and longest-lived empires in world history. It existed for almost six centuries, from the capture of Ceuta in 1415, to the handover of Portuguese Macau to China in 1999. The empire began in the 15th century, and from the early 16th century it stretched across the globe, with bases in North and South America, Africa, and various regions of Asia and Oceania. The Portuguese Empire has been described as the first global empire in history, a description also given to the Spanish Empire.The Portuguese Empire originated at the beginning of the Age of Discovery, and the power and influence of the Kingdom of Portugal would eventually expand across the globe. In 1500, either by an accidental landfall or by the crown's secret design, Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil on the South American coast.
Over the following decades, Portuguese sailors continued to explore the coasts and islands of East Asia, establishing forts and factories as they went. By 1571 a string of naval outposts connected Lisbon to Nagasaki along the coasts of Africa, the Middle East, India and South Asia. This commercial network and the colonial trade had a substantial positive impact on Portuguese economic growth (1500–1800), when it accounted for about a fifth of Portugal's per-capita income.
When King Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal) inherited the Portuguese crown in 1580 there began a 60-year union between Spain and Portugal known to subsequent historiography as the Iberian Union. Though the realms continued to have separate administrations, the Council of Portugal ruled the country and its empire from Madrid. As the King of Spain was also King of Portugal, Portuguese colonies became the subject of attacks by three rival European powers hostile to Spain: the Dutch Republic, England, and France. With its smaller population, Portugal found itself unable to effectively defend its overstretched network of trading posts, and the empire began a long and gradual decline. Eventually, Brazil became the most valuable colony of the second era of empire (1663–1825), until, as part of the wave of independence movements that swept the Americas during the early 19th century, it broke away in 1822.
The third era of empire covers the final stage of Portuguese colonialism after the independence of Brazil in the 1820s. By then, the colonial possessions had been reduced to forts and plantations along the African coastline (expanded inland during the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century), Portuguese Timor, and enclaves in India (Portuguese India) and China (Portuguese Macau). The 1890 British Ultimatum led to the contraction of Portuguese ambitions in Africa.
Under António Salazar (in office 1932–1968), the Second Portuguese Republic made some ill-fated attempts to cling on to its last remaining colonies. Under the ideology of Pluricontinentalism, the regime renamed its colonies "overseas provinces" while retaining the system of forced labour, from which only a small indigenous élite was normally exempt. In 1961 India annexed Goa and Dahomey (now Benin) annexed Fort of São João Baptista de Ajudá. The Portuguese Colonial War in Africa lasted from 1961 until the final overthrow of the Estado Novo regime in 1974. The so-called Carnation Revolution of April 1974 in Lisbon led to the hasty decolonization of Portuguese Africa and to the 1975 ...
