The Marché du Film (lit. Film Market) is the business counterpart of the Cannes Film Festival and one of the largest film markets in the world.
Established in 1959, it is held annually in conjunction with the Festival de Cannes.
With 11,800 participants from 108 different countries, attendance at the 2013 Marché du Film was up 4% compared to 2012. 5,364 films were presented in 2013. Documentary films grew 35% in 2013, with 850 documentaries presented, including 643 completed titles. 323 of those films were made available in the digital video library of the Doc Corner.
The 2014 edition of the Marché du Film will be held from May 14–23.
History
With the success of the Festival de Cannes in the 1950s, the Marché du Film was formed in 1959 to help meet the needs of film industry professionals.
As part of the Marché du Film, special sessions are held exclusively for producers, including the Producers Network and Producers Workshop.
Features and services
A number of services are provided during the Marché du Film for the benefit of producers, directors, festival programmers, sales agents, and other film industry professionals.
By the 2nd century BC the LigurianOxybii established a settlement here known as Aegitna (Αίγιθνα in ancient greek). Historians are unsure what the name means. The area was a fishing village used as a port of call between the Lérins Islands.
In 69 AD it became the scene of violent conflict between the troops of Otho and Vitellius.
In the 10th century the town was known as Canua. The name may derive from "canna," a reed. Canua was probably the site of a small Ligurian port, and later a Roman outpost on Le Suquet hill, suggested by Roman tombs discovered here. Le Suquet housed an 11th-century tower which overlooked swamps where the city now stands. Most of the ancient activity, especially protection, was on the Lérins Islands and the history of Cannes is closely tied to the history of the islands.
The 2006 Cannes Film Festival ran from 17 May 2006 to 28 May 2006. Twenty films from eleven countries were in competition for the Palme d'Or. The President of the Official Jury was Wong Kar-wai, the first Chinese director to preside over the jury.
The festival opened with the premiere screening of The Da Vinci Code, based on the novel by Dan Brown. Journalists gave the film a cool reception at its first press screening, with loud laughter breaking out at one of the pivotal scenes.Transylvania by Tony Gatlif closed the festival. Paris, je t'aime opened the Un Certain Regard section of the festival.
The 63rd annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 12 to 23 May 2010, in Cannes, France. The Cannes Film Festival, hailed as being one of the most recognized and prestigious film festivals worldwide, was founded in 1946. It consists of having films screened in and out of competition during the festival; films screened in competition compete for the Palme d'Or award. The award in 2010 was won by Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, a Thai film directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. This was determined by the festival's jury members who reviewed films screened in competition. American film directorTim Burton was the president of the jury for the international competition, and other members of the jury for that competition included actors, screenwriters and composers, such as Kate Beckinsale, Emmanuel Carrère, Benicio del Toro, and Alexandre Desplat. Other categories for films screened in competition that have their own separate juries for other awards are for Short Films and the Un Certain Regard category. Ridley Scott's Robin Hood opened the festival and Julie Bertuccelli's The Tree was the closing film. The full film lineup for the festival was announced on 15 April 2010.

"I think this is where it becomes apparent that not all movies are destined to have an audience or indeed deserve and audience," explains Charlie Bloye, chief executive at FilmExportUK. "It is important for people out there to realize that there is a winnowing process that goes on where a lot of people are selecting top quality films to present to them and, unfortunately, it means that some people's dreams are dashed at a market like this."
