It’s with great joy that we launch—on the occasion of his new masterpiece Pain & Glory coming to cinemas—a 3-month long retrospective in the UK on the one and only Master of Transgression Pedro Almodóvar!
DARK HABITS (1983)
We kick things off with Dark Habits, an irreverent, playfully scandalous slap in the face of francoism.
WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS? (1984)
Delving deeper into Almodóvar’s 80s period, we bring you this nightmarish cult comedy—the first of the auteur’s films to be well received in Spain. Confronting the repression of a society in recovery from dictatorship, What Have I Done flirts with neorealism while proudly transgressing its rules.
WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988)
And we reach peak Almodóvar! Alive with a wild pace and an irresistible rhythm, this witty classic redefined screwball comedy for a new era of arthouse pleasure. The insanity of love and sex had never been so fun nor colourful—and as for Pedro, he was forever thrust into the international spotlight.
LAW OF DESIRE (1987)
Pablo loves Juan but Juan is lukewarm about the relationship. Antonio becomes obsessed with Pablo after one evening intended to be a mere one-night stand. Paralleling this dangerous love triangle is the story of Pablo’s sister Tina, a transgender woman about whom Pablo is writing a play.
KIKA (1993)
Kika, a young cosmetologist, is called to the mansion of Nicolas, an American writer to make-up the corpse of his stepson, Ramon. Ramon, who is not dead, is revived by Kika’s attentions and she then moves in with him. They might live happily ever after but first they have to deal with some things…
THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET (1995)
Leo, a middle-aged writer of popular romantic novels who writes under a pseudonym, despises her own work. At home she is also miserable. Her husband, who works overseas, is distant both physically and emotionally. Yet the appearance of a new editor offers an opportunity for Leo to reassess her life.
