Edward G. Dobson (December 30, 1949 – December 26, 2015) was a Northern Irish-American pastor, at one time an executive for the Moral Majority. After becoming disillusioned with the Christian Right, he became the pastor of a megachurch in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a nationally known author and speaker, especially after being diagnosed with ALS in 2000.
Biography
In 1964, Dobson moved to the United States from Northern Ireland. He earned a BA (1970) and an MA (1972) from Bob Jones University and an EdD (1986) in higher education from the University of Virginia. At 23, Dobson became Dean of Men at Liberty University, "but before long he was also teaching New Testament survey, coaching the soccer team, and taking on more administrative duties. In time, Dobson was named vice president for student life as well as associate pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church." When the Moral Majority was organized in June 1979, Jerry Falwell named Dobson to the board. Three years later, the premiere issue of Fundamentalist Journal listed him as one of two senior editors; he became editor-in-chief two and a half years later and served as a voice of the Moral Majority. Dobson and another Liberty faculty member, Ed Hindson, effectively ghost-wrote Falwell's The Fundamentalist Phenomenon (1981).
The Calvary Church parish was founded in 1832, and initially used a wooden-frame church on what was then Fourth Avenue – which has since become Park Avenue– uptown of its current site.
That building was moved to the current location in 1842, and the new Renwick-designed Gothic Revival sanctuary was completed in 1848. Renwick patterned Calvary after twin-towered French cathedrals, but, unlike Grace Church, Calvary was constructed of brownstone. The church's two wooden spires were removed in September 1860 when they became unstable; the octagonal bases remained but eventually deteriorated and were removed in 1929.
Calvary, also Golgotha/ˈɡɒlɡəθə/, was, according to the Gospels, a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was crucified.Golgotha(s) (Γολγοθάς) is the Greek transcription in the New Testament of an Aramaic term that has traditionally been presumed to be Gûlgaltâ (but see below for an alternative). The Bible translates the term to mean place of [the] skull, which in Greek is Κρανίου Τόπος (Kraníou Tópos), and in Latin is Calvariæ Locus, from which the English word Calvary is derived.
Biblical references and etymology
Golgotha is referred to in early writings as a hill resembling a skullcap located very near to a gate into Jerusalem: "A spot there is called Golgotha, - of old the fathers' earlier tongue thus called its name, 'The skull-pan of a head'."
Since the 6th century it has been referred to as the location of a mountain, and as a small hill since 333. The Gospels describe it as a place near enough to the city that those coming in and out could read the inscription 'Jesus of Nazareth - King of the Jews'. When the King James Version was written, the translators used an anglicised version — Calvary — of the Latin gloss from the Vulgate (Calvariæ), to refer to Golgotha in the Gospel of Luke, rather than translate it; subsequent uses of Calvary stem from this single translation decision. The location itself is mentioned in all four canonical Gospels:
"Calvary" is episode 12 of season 4 in the television show Angel. The gang scrambles to locate Angel’s soul, while Angelus tells the group that the Beast is controlled by a higher being further up.
Plot
Connor, Wesley and Cordelia force their way into the Shaman's chambers and question him about Angel's soul, only to find that Angel's soul still remains in its container, although he warns them that if the container is broken and the soul isn't being controlled, the soul will cease to exist, Angelus will get out, and they'll,"be screwed." Angelus continues to taunt the gang, angering Gunn over his relationship with Fred. Lilah sneaks in, emerging from the sewers holding a crowbar and attempts a deal with Angelus. Gunn finally spots Lilah on the video monitor and rushes downstairs to put a tranquilizer dart in Angelus, while Lilah runs off. While the others question Lilah's intentions, Wesley chases and catches her. He thumbs through her copy of Rhinehardt's Compendium, finding information his copy does not contain. Lilah had received her copy on the pan-dimensional black market, and Wesley determines someone had erased the information in this dimension.
A calvary (calvaire in French) is a type of monumental public crucifix, sometimes encased in an open shrine, most commonly found across northern France from Brittany east and through Belgium and equally familiar as wayside structures provided with minimal sheltering roofs in Italy and Spain. The Breton calvaire is distinguished from a simple crucifix cross by the inclusion of three-dimensional figures surrounding the Crucifixion itself, typically representing Mary and the apostles of Jesus, though later saints and symbolic figures may also be depicted.
In northern France and Belgium, such wayside calvaries erected at the junction of routes and tracks "function both as navigation devices and objects of veneration", Nicholas J. Saunders has observed "Since medieval times they have fixed the landscape, symbolically acquiring it for the Christian faith, in the same way that, previously, Megalithic monuments marked prehistoric landscapes according to presumed religious and ideological imperatives".

Suffering is everywhere and it changes us, for better or worse.
Film One - It Ain't Over
Ed's Story is our story. Diagnosed with ALS and given a short time to live, Ed Dobson wrestles with issues suffering raises: worry, identity, forgiveness, gratitude, and healing. What emerges in this 7-film series is his discovery that there is always hope.
ED'S STORY: Film Two — Consider the Birds
Sometimes worry can come in waves and be overwhelming. We try so hard to control our lives, when in face we have no control over the future. Ed discovered that it is hard to find God when we are worried about tomorrow; but when we live in the moment, He is right there with us.
ED'S STORY: Film Three — Be There
When people around us suffer, it's only natural to want to help. But what can you say when someone's life falls apart and suffering becomes their reality? Ed learned that sometimes the answer is to "show up and shut up." Perhaps just being present can bring more comfort, peace, and a sense of God's presence than words ever could.

But his own hangups with religion and the struggle to find what he truly believed led him to leave Mars Hill in a move that shocked many people. And then just a month after making that monumental decision, his father Ed Dobson, who was a famous pastor, died after a 15 year battle with ALS. This 1-2 gut punch propelled Kent even deeper into the abyss of finding his true self.
Thankfully for us, Kent hasn’t found it yet. And he’s candidly sharing his journey full of frustrations, doubts, truths and personal struggles via his podcast as well as in his latest book, “Bitten by a Camel: Leaving Church, Finding God”
In a long and winding conversation, Kent and I discuss the death of his father, how he became a pastor in part to please his dad, certainty and doubt, death of ego and the soul, wishing things were easier to understand, the thirst for ultimate meaning, coin slot Christianity and ultimately how Kent feels grateful for his own hangups with religion.
Kent currently leads retreats and wilderness programs designed to cultivate human wholeness and pursue the perennial questions of the soul. He also guides pilgrimage adventures to Israel and speaks and lectures. Kent lives in Ada, Michigan, with his wife and three children.

Become the kind of person who can find hope in the midst of difficult circumstances.
In It Ain't Over, the first film in the Ed's Story series, Ed Dobson reminds us that life isn't over yet and that we don't have to feel overwhelmed by the struggles we're facing today. Difficult news can sometimes make us feel like our lives are over. Ed shows us that we don't know the future, and that things may turn out quite differently from what we expect.

Kent Dobson was the leader and pastor of one of the best known mega-churches in the country. He had a good salary and the notoriety enjoyed by most pastors that hold that position.
Although he was dying from ALS, this former pastor had a radical idea: live a year as Jesus lived. Eat as Jesus ate. Pray as Jesus prayed. What if might happen in our lives if we desired to know Jesus like Ed Dobson did? -------------------------------------------
