Buffalo Bayou
Buffalo Bayou is a shady, slow-moving river and a main waterway, known as the "Mother Bayou," flowing through Houston in Harris County, Texas. Formed some 18,000 years ago, it has its source in the rapidly developing prairie of Katy, Fort Bend County, Texas, and flows approximately 53 miles (85 km) east through the Houston Ship Channel and into Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to drainage water impounded and released by Addicks and Barker Dams, the bayou is fed by natural springs, surface runoff from streets, parking lots, and highways, and several significant tributary bayous, such as White Oak Bayou, Greens Bayou, and Brays Bayou.
Route
Buffalo Bayou is impounded in the upper watershed by the Addicks and Barker Reservoirs which regulate the bayou's flood flows. In addition to controlling high water, the discharge from the dams can be used to keep the bayou at a controlled level during water-based festivals, such as the Buffalo Bayou Regatta. From the dams, the bayou flows east under State Highway 6. Also starting at Barker Dam is Terry Hershey Park which consists of the land on both sides of the bayou from Highway 6 to Beltway 8 (also known as the Sam Houston Tollway). Jogging, biking, kayaking and fishing are popular in this area, although most people consider the bayou unfit for swimming.

Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway
The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (B.B.B.C. or B.B.B. & C.) was the first operating railroad in Texas.
Name
The Colorado in its name refers to the Colorado River of Texas, not the state of Colorado. In the line's early days, it was often called the Harrisburg Railroad. In 1868, it changed owners and became the Galveston, Harrisburg, & San Antonio Railroad (reporting mark GHSA). It was the oldest component of the Southern Pacific system (reporting mark SP). Since the 1996 merger, the former Southern Pacific operates under the Union Pacific name. The old Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado right-of-way was renamed the Union Pacific-Glidden Subdivision, operating between Alleyton, Texas and the former Harrisburg, Texas, which was annexed by Houston.
History
Andrew Briscoe initiated the first attempt to establish a railroad from Harrisburg, Texas to the Brazos and Colorado Rivers. Houston's Morning Star published a notice on May 16, 1840 entitled "Harrisburg and Brazos Railroad," that claimed, "A large number of laborers are engaged at present in throwing up the track and preparing for rails at an early season, and a greater number will soon be employed."

Colorado (
i/kɒləˈrædoʊ/, or /kɒləˈrɑːdoʊ/) (Spanish for "ruddy") is a state in the United States encompassing most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. Colorado is part of the Western United States, the Southwestern United States, and the Mountain States. Colorado is the 8th most extensive and the 22nd most populous of the 50 United States. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Colorado was 5,456,574 on July 1, 2015, an increase of 8.50% since the 2010 United States Census.
The state was named for the Colorado River, which Spanish travelers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy (Spanish: colorado) silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it became a state 28 days after the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Colorado wine
Colorado wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Colorado. Most of Colorado's vineyards are located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, though an increasing number of wineries are located along the Front Range.
Geography and climate
Colorado's grape growing regions contain some of the highest elevation vineyards in the world, with most viticulture in the state practiced between 4,000 feet (1,219 m) and 7,000 feet (2,134 m) feet above sea level. The mountain climate ensures warm summer days and cool nights. Colorado is home to two designated American Viticultural Areas of the Grand Valley AVA and the West Elks AVA, where most of the vineyards in the state are located. Approximately 100 commercial wineries operate in Colorado and about 1,000 acres (405 ha) are planted to grapevines. Other wine regions include: the Four Corners area near Cortez, near Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, and Durango; Pikes Peak/Arkansas River Valley near Salida, Canon City, and Manitou Springs; and the Front Range between Fort Collins and Castle Rock, with many wineries located in the Denver metropolitan area.

Colorado (horse)
Colorado (1923–1929) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won the 2000 Guineas in 1926 and the Eclipse Stakes in 1927. He was also noted for his rivalry with the Derby winner Coronach whom he defeated on three of their four meetings.
Background
Until the emergence of Fairway at the end of the decade, Colorado was regarded as the best racehorse sired by Phalaris, who became the most influential stallion of the 20th Century. His dam, Canyon, won the 1000 Guineas in 1916 and was a successful broodmare. In addition to Colorado she produced the Eclipse Stakes winner Caerleon.
He was a small, but powerfully built colt standing just over 15 hands, known to be a particular favourite of his owner, Lord Derby. He was trained at Lord Derby's Stanley House stable by George Lambton who found him a difficult horse to prepare because of his habit of "choking" in exercise gallops.
Racing career
1925: two-year-old season
Colorado was a leading two-year-old in 1925, winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. In the Free Handicap, an official assessment of the year's two-year-olds, Colorado was assesses on 118lbs, eight pounds below the joint topweights Coronach and Legatee.

I'm in a part of Houston that was once a city called Harrisburg and it is actually a few years older than the city of Houston. It's the site of the very first railroad in Texas which was the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway.. Cool facts about the BBB&C it was the first railroad to begin operating in Texas, the first component of the present Southern Pacific to open for service, and the second railroad west of the Mississippi River. Dan Worrall is among a fifth generation of his family to live in the Houston area. He received a BA from Rice University in 1972 and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978, both in geology. Following a career in exploration geology research and basin studies at Shell Oil Company, he has been a member of the Harris County Historical Commission since 2014, and a member of the HAS since 2017. In 2016, he published a book on the history of the west Houston area entitled Pleasant Bend: Upper Buffalo Bayou and the San Felipe Trail in the Nineteenth Century. Early this year, he followed that with A Prehistory of Houston and Southeast Texas: Landscape and Culture, which describes the development of our area’s natural landscape as well as the Native American people who have lived here for thirteen or more millennia. Cunningham of San Antonio accumulated more than 12,000 acres of the property over time and invested more than $1 million in a sugar refinery, a new raw-sugar mill, a paper mill, and the fourteen-mile Sugar Land Railroad in the 1890s. Sugar Land was one of the rail stations. In 1890 a second post office opened. At that time much of the labor force was leased from the nearby state prison farms. It was the first railroad to begin operating in Texas, and the first standard gauge railroad west of the Mississippi River. The railway continued its extension westward until, in 1883, it linked with its eastward counterpart, completing the Sunset Route from Los Angeles to New Orleans. James Trane invented a new low-pressure heating system he proudly called the Trane Vapor Heating System. His son, Reuben, was just back from college with a degree in mechanical engineering, so father and son began manufacturing operations in 1910 and incorporated as The Trane Company in 1913.

People of the Late Archaic Lower Brazos Culture (LBC) lived along the lower parts of the Brazos and Colorado Rivers extending to the coast; their territory was approximately equivalent to that of the Coco/Karankawa of the early Historic Period. They are principally known from a series of cemetery sites found along the rims of those two river valleys, which were studied by several archeological groups in the 1960s-1990s, including the HAS. A late period at these burial sites (2600 to 1650 BP, or 650 BC to AD 400) witnessed extensive use of exotic long distance exchange goods and marine shell ornaments. Recent research by ethnohistorians using oral history accounts as well as earlier historic era written descriptions of Native Americans of the eastern woodlands region suggest that such long distance exchange was less commercially driven than it was spiritual and cultural. Dan Worrall is among a fifth generation of his family to live in the Houston area. He received a BA from Rice University in 1972 and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978, both in geology. Following a career in exploration geology research and basin studies at Shell Oil Company, he has been a member of the Harris County Historical Commission since 2014, and a member of the HAS since 2017. In 2016, he published a book on the history of the west Houston area entitled Pleasant Bend: Upper Buffalo Bayou and the San Felipe Trail in the Nineteenth Century. Early this year, he followed that with A Prehistory of Houston and Southeast Texas: Landscape and Culture, which describes the development of our area’s natural landscape as well as the Native American people who have lived here for thirteen or more millennia. It is a map-based work that prominently uses 60 years of HAS archeological research among its many sources.

Sugar Land is on Oyster Creek and U.S. Highway 90A, east of the Brazos River and seven miles northeast of Richmond in northeastern Fort Bend County. The area was originally granted to Samuel M. Williams in 1828 for his service as secretary to Stephen F. Austin. Nathaniel F. Williams purchased the land from his brother in 1838, and there he and a third brother, Matthew R. Williams, operated Oakland Plantation, which grew cotton, corn, and sugarcane. The Williams brothers established their raw-sugar mill in 1843. In 1853 Oakland Plantation was purchased by Benjamin F. Terry and William J. Kyle, who were instrumental in extending the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway through the property. A post office was established in Sugar Land in 1858. After the deaths of Terry in 1861 and Kyle in 1864 the plantation began to languish. The post office was closed in 1886. E. H. Cunningham of San Antonio accumulated more than 12,000 acres of the property over time and invested more than $1 million in a sugar refinery, a new raw-sugar mill, a paper mill, and the fourteen-mile Sugar Land Railroad in the 1890s. Sugar Land was one of the rail stations. In 1890 a second post office opened. At that time much of the labor force was leased from the nearby state prison farms. Buffalo Bayou
Buffalo Bayou is a shady, slow-moving river and a main waterway, known as the "Mother Bayou," flowing through Houston in Harris County, Texas. Formed some 18,000 years ago, it has its source in the rapidly developing prairie of Katy, Fort Bend County, Texas, and flows approximately 53 miles (85 km) east through the Houston Ship Channel and into Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to drainage water impounded and released by Addicks and Barker Dams, the bayou is fed by natural springs, surface runoff from streets, parking lots, and highways, and several significant tributary bayous, such as White Oak Bayou, Greens Bayou, and Brays Bayou.
Route
Buffalo Bayou is impounded in the upper watershed by the Addicks and Barker Reservoirs which regulate the bayou's flood flows. In addition to controlling high water, the discharge from the dams can be used to keep the bayou at a controlled level during water-based festivals, such as the Buffalo Bayou Regatta. From the dams, the bayou flows east under State Highway 6. Also starting at Barker Dam is Terry Hershey Park which consists of the land on both sides of the bayou from Highway 6 to Beltway 8 (also known as the Sam Houston Tollway). Jogging, biking, kayaking and fishing are popular in this area, although most people consider the bayou unfit for swimming.
