Toni Michele Braxton (born October 7, 1967) is an American singer–songwriter, pianist, record producer, actress, television personality, and philanthropist. Rising to fame in the beginning of the early–1990s, Braxton quickly established herself as an R&B icon and became one of the best-selling female artists of the 1990s decade, garnering her honorific titles such as the "Queen of R&B" and being recognized as one of the most outstanding voices of this generation.
Her self-titled debut studio album was released in 1993. It sold over 10 million copies worldwide, spawning such hits as "Another Sad Love Song" and "Breathe Again" and earning Braxton three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. Released in 1996, her second album, Secrets, continued her acclaim and mega success, selling over 15 million copies globally. The album spawned the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits "You're Makin' Me High" and "Un-Break My Heart", the latter of which became her signature song and the second top-selling single of all time by a female artist. Braxton won two Grammy Awards for Secrets. In 2000, her third album, The Heat, was released. It sold over 4 million copies and included the hit single "He Wasn't Man Enough", for which Braxton won a Grammy Award. She then released three more studio albums – More Than A Woman (2002), Libra (2005) and Pulse (2010), experiencing personal and label conflicts in between these releases. In 2014, Braxton and long-time collaborator Babyface released a duet album entitled Love, Marriage & Divorce, which earned the duo a Grammy Award in early 2015.
Toni Braxton debuted at number 36 on the Billboard 200 and later spent two non-consecutive weeks atop the chart as well as three non-consecutive weeks atop the R&B Albums chart. It has sold 5,135,000 copies in the United States and 10 million copies worldwide. The album was primarily produced by Reid, Babyface, and Daryl Simmons. The first single, "Another Sad Love Song", peaked at number seven and number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles charts, respectively. The album's second single, "Breathe Again", peaked in the top five of both the Hot 100 and R&B charts and at number two on the UK Singles Chart. More singles from Toni Braxton were released in 1994, including "You Mean the World to Me", "Seven Whole Days", and "I Belong to You"/"How Many Ways".
The album earned Braxton several awards, including three Grammy Awards (for Best New Artist and two consecutive awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1994 and 1995). She also won two American Music Awards (for Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist and Favorite New Adult Contemporary Artist) in 1994 and another one in 1995 (for Favorite Soul/R&B Album).
"Breathe Again" is a song by American R&B singer Toni Braxton from her self-titled debut album (1993). Written by Babyface and produced by L. A. Reid, Babyface, and Daryl Simmons, the ballad was released as the album's second single, garnering heavy airplay during the summer and autumn of 1993, which resulted in it being the most successful single released from the album. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Adult Contemporary charts. The song reached number two on the UK charts in January 1994.
After the success of the previous single, "Another Sad Love Song", "Breathe Again" was released as the second official single from Toni Braxton's self-titled album, on August 6, 1993. "Breathe Again" was written and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, with co-production being handled by Daryl Simmons and L.A. Reid. Lyrically, in "Breathe Again", Braxton would crumble and have a nervous breakdown if her boyfriend were to break up with her, singing, "If I never feel you in my arms again/If I never feel your tender kiss again/If I never hear I love you now and then [...] Please understand if love ends/Then I promise you, I promise you/That, that I shall never breathe again."
Breathe Again is the third studio album by Canadian recording artist Danny Fernandes. It was released on CP Records on August 27, 2013. The album is his first to feature a parental advisory warning label.
Writing & Recording
The album was originally to be titled Emotional, due to Fernandes' experiences with the darker aspects of fame. In an interview with Kiss 92.5, Fernandes revealed that his new record will contain "a lot of sad stuff". On the album's writing and recording process, he said: "I took a year off from everything and focused on this album. I wrote the whole thing and honestly I wrote it about this whole experience, this breakup and the two years I was in a mess. Just being able to write was amazing. My label sent me away to Los Angeles and said, ‘Don’t come back until you’re done writing a whole album.’ So it was great just to get away. And there wasn’t much collaboration; most of the producers were friends of mine in Los Angeles." Fernandes co-wrote and wrote all of the songs on the album. He said of the album's overall vibe: "There's really not any 'happy' songs on the album. I went through a lot in the last four years, I just thought I'd put it all on this record."
Keith Stanley, indicating in a three and a half review from HM Magazine, says, "Breathe Again is a fresh take for this trio." Awarding the album four stars at Jesus Freak Hideout, Christopher Smith writes, "this project warrants many spins as it is one the strongest rock albums to come out this year." Kevin Hoskins, rating the album four stars for Jesus Freak Hideout, says, "Spoken has not disappointed." Giving the album four stars from New Release Today, Mary Nikkel states, "With Breathe Again, Spoken proves themselves to be on the cutting edge of the best elements of hard rock: haunting combinations of guitar tones and electronic elements, smooth vocals sending melodies soaring and lyrics that are as honest as they are ultimately redemptive." Michael Weaver, indicating in a four star review by Jesus Freak Hideout, describes, "Matt Baird has done just that with Spoken as Illusion and Breathe Again are quite possible the band's best work. Folks should be jamming Spoken's latest album for some time to come." Signaling in a 4.8 out of five review at The Christian Beat, Chris Major writes, "The album’s tracks range from higher energy to calmer motion, yet all are brilliantly orchestrated. Listening even a few songs in, it is clear that Spoken has released their best work yet." Rating the album a 76-percent for Jesus Wired, Topher Parks states, "Breathe Again is a solid release from Spoken and proves once again why they’re one of the few bands still alive and kicking from the ‘90s Christian rock scene." Allocating the album a 4.3 star review at Anchor Music News, Rob Clark writes, "This is an album which heralds a band coming back with more energy and passion...The vocals, instrumentation, and vocals stand out."
